Hey, if Revis and Mangold get their deals pre-camp, I wonder if Harris and D'Brick will take the tack of holding out? Harris has been leaving it to his agents up until now, but who knows? BTW, isn't it nice to be in a position where we're worrying about keeping talent rather than finding talent?
The way tanny has manuevered thru the cap situations in the past, I'm not worried. He is not playing hardball he's just playing win ball. All the players that don't get contracts don't because we try to avoid over paying for above average so we can keep the great ones. Tanny is just setting the bargaining tone. "We want you here but if you're commited to winning like we are, we have to have funds otherwise we'll be signing Jayson taylors your whole career" Some how some way (probably really creatively if history is anything to go by), Revis will get his million a game and will be a Jet for as long as he wants to be.
NYPost_Hubbuch Revis is telling friends that this compares to the Kendall, Baker, Coles and Leon situations in terms of the #Jets breaking promises. dunno if I believe this guy, but whatever just posting what i saw.
I can see that to a certain extent. I think they have the reputation of being a team that cuts older players in favour of youth, but that has the added bonus of attracting younger players because they may get to start earlier. Just saw this on Hubbuch's twitter: Gah! Beat me to it, Faulk.
Sounds like a game of chicken: "I'll hold out for more money, but ultimately don't want to look like a greedy asshole and just want to play" vs. "I won't sign you for a penny more than I have to, but I'll ultimately sign you no matter what". Personally, I think the first guy will win, but we'll all be winners in the end. Yay.
Yes, they are, and that is not good for the long term. Sure, they helped Santonio, Braylon, and Cromartie out with some situations for the short term but they have not guaranteed a long term contract to either in the future. On top of those situations you now have Revis who is obviously VERY PISSED off with the latest contract offer and you have Mangold saying "it'll be a serious issue" if he doesn't have a long term deal done in the next 7-8 weeks before Training Camp. Not good. Both will be Jets in 2010, no question about that, but both may not show up until the first week of September which could hinder their play early and both could get so annoyed with their contract situations that they decide to test the Free Agent waters after the season. Not good at all.
dunno about that. Jets restructured Braylon Edwards 2010 salary, so if he is suspened he wont miss Game 1's $. Also gave Cro 500k for child/court bullshit. BobGlauber
You can't let your players boss you around, but you have to keep them happy too. Kind of hard to do both perfectly. I hope it'll get done in the end, but I'm sure it won't happen without a few hurt feelings along the way. Ultimately, neither Mangold nor Revis wants to go anywhere else.
They also helped Santonio out and now he won't lose as much money as he should've. Still they have not been giving out long term deals to key players and the very few times they had they were long, drawn out negotiations. Other than Cotchery can you think of a negotiation lately with the Jets that went smoothly, excluding Free Agents?
If I had to guess they probably came to him with a DeAngelo Hall Raiders/Nate Clements 49ers type deal: 8 years, $80 million.
I would guess 6mil. Probably as ridiculously low as the highball offer his agent floated through the press and then denied having done it.
I was under the impression that, due to the rules of an uncapped year, teams were significantly hamstrung in terms of re-signing players to long-term deals at significant salary upgrades. Like the salary can't go up > 30% per year or something. It seems like Tanny's hands are completely tied by these rules. So, how are Revis and Mangold planning on holding out of TC if it's literally impossible to revise their contracts at the moment?
