The runners haven't thrown 10 INTs, haven't thrown the balls behind wide open receivers, or just generally been out of sync with the passing game. A good QB can still play respectably even when the rest of the team is only average. A mediocre QB collapses when the stars don't align. We can't keep staking our future on QBs who are "excellent when ______" but a mess when whatever fills that blank does not happen. Guys like Rogers, Brady, Manning, Big Ben, and Russell Wilson are (were) unbeatable when the stars align, but also extremely hard to beat when things are not perfectly in their favor. Fitzpatrick needs to have a fire lit under him, and a warning that Geno or Petty are going to get a shot if he doesn't get it done.
Lots of young QBs play for crappy teams and don't play like trainwrecks. Mariota in Tennessee for example. And what has Geno done under the current regime? Gotten punched out for being a jerk and played like garbage this preseason.
