Fuck him. He's not mentoring shit right now (and I don't think he's qualified to mentor anyone given his resume). He's not worth a multi-year investment. #FuckoffFitz
Here's all the leverage he needs: The best chance the Jets have to win the most games this season is with Fitzpatrick at quarterback.
If I were Mac, I would start inquiring about Kaepernick and Foles. I would offer Fitz a slight concession (a million or two, nothing that would significantly impact our cap but just so he and his agent could feel like they got something). I would tell him that if he doesn't take it, Bowles may decide at any time that he will not be the starter. And that at any time I might bring in another QB (e.g. Kaepernick), and that would be it for Fitz.
FO probably may make a small concession but I do not feel that they are in a rush to do so. Best scenario is to resign Fitz to a multi-year deal. A one year deal does not suit this team at all as they are not sure Hack could step up and need the bridge until they have a quality replacement. I understand they may run with Geno but that is not a good scenario long term either as there are one of 2 outcomes neither good - Geno bombs and the Jets have a 4-12 season and anyone who did not SHOUT to have Fitz resigned will be castigated. But equally what if Geno has a decent season - 3,500 yds / 24 TDs / 12 Ints / 6 fumbles and the Jets go 11-5 and make the playoffs - then he will want a multi million contract that pays him as a starter and we have to endure this next year again as we will not be 100% sure what to do with Hack at that stage if this happens. Biggest issue I have is that this thread is still going BUT Fitz is a journeyman - he is not elite and we are still hung up on whether he signs or not - TBH I'm bored and just want to discuss what the players we have signed and who will be at camp do - NEXT THREAD (ooops now I sound like Geno!! )
Wait, since when has paying a young QB if he's proven he can play well ever a bad scenario? If it turns out he has learned a lot, he has drastically improved, and he can play well on a regular basis, how in the world would that be a problem?
We would be in the same position we are with Fitz or more like the Redskins are this year - 1 year of production with no guarantee it will be repeated but the player wants to get paid @ $15-$20 million per season based on that short period of productivity. Problem is not with the season problem is that we have a repeat next year of the scenario and we then have to decide on whether we run with Geno or try to get Hack into a place where he can start and produce while his cap number is low so we keep other pieces in place to make a run in 2017
If geno has a fitZ 2015 type year he will be franchised. If we go 4-12 we may have a shot at deshaun watson. I see no downside to running with geno
Obviously, you haven't been paying attention to this thread-- When someone points out a truth, like you have, the person they're talking to always comes back with name calling and something along the lines of, "this is the internet, and you can't make me". Therefore: Screw you, Dirtbag! You don't get to decide what conditions I become accustomed to!
The franchise tag for a QB was $19.9 million this offseason. Geno Smith better have a hell of a better season than Fitz did last year to consider giving him that. I hear ya though on not worrying at this point about paying him in a scenario where he plays well. Who cares, if were in the spot we'll have to figure it out but its not a bad one to be in.
