If we give Fitz any more than the $10 mil we should have given to Snacks I will have a hard time getting excited to watch him under center.

that would actually be a good thing because since it was only 1 season of decent play he wouldn't get or ask for a contract like some of these QBs are getting. You could probably sign him to a contract similar to what RG3 got in Cleveland - (2 years, topping out at $15 mil, with a team friendly out after year 1), or a deal similar to what the Jets reportedly offered Fitzpatrick, (3 years, topping out at $24 mil, with a team friendly out after year 1 or 2).

essentially you'd be paying Fitzpatrick money to a QB much younger than Fitzpatrick. Oh- and you'd get a year of Fitzpatrick output in 2016. I think we'd all sign up for that deal.

I don't see that happening though as I believe the Jets will come to terms with Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith will play his final season here as the backup

You have to do what the Redskins did and tag Geno. If you let him hit the open market after a productive season at his age he's probably getting Osweiler money, and that's far too rich for the Jets. Make him prove he can do it again and if he has another productive season(assuming he plays decent this year), then you sign him to a long term deal. But I serously doubt it gets to that point.

I can see fitz re-signing and somehow not playing the whole season and geno (gino?) playing just well enough to muddy the waters so we are still discussing this next season while adding the prospect of hackenburg to the argument.
    Oh the joy

Just like Fitz didn't demand a crazy stupid contract after one year of decent play.

yeah that's the worst case scenario. Jets sign Fitzy, he/they flop. At 1-7 they put in Smith and he looks like an absolute world beater for half a season in a bunch of meaningless games. Then you wonder could he actually repeat that play? was it really him or did the guys around him figure out how to play? as he asks for big money and gets ready to hit the open market.

It's mind-boggling that people don't want to retain the quarterback that turned in one of the top 3 quarterback seasons we've seen in nearly 30 years, and probably the second best to Testaverde's 1998 campaign

With all the quarterback problems this franchise has endured, let's just let the guy walk and enter Geno ball over a couple million dollars we just freed up on our cap? Unbelievable.

I don't want to see the Jets break the bank for Fitz, but the Jets simply cannot depend on Geno and the other QBs on the roster. Hopefully the Wilkerson deal will help with the negotiations.

I don't think breaking Jets QB records are a big deal but Fitz gets this team ready to play and the Jets need all the help they can get. I can see Fitz taking a big step back but if he does at least the Jets have better depth

Even $15 million for next year (hopefully only next year) makes him the #22 paid quarterback in the league as per over the cap average salaries. The only QB's he'd be getting paid more than are the likes of Nick Foles, RGIII, Chase Daniels, Sanchez, McCown, Chad Henne, Case Keenum, etc. (And all players still on their rookie deals). He'd rank right behind Dalton, Carson Palmer, Alex Smith and Sam Bradford.

I'll easily take that to prevent Geno from playing. Personally I'm still not worried about it. By my count, if we get Fitzy in by August 15th we're in good shape as he knows the offense and it's not like he's being thrown into a situation with many new players or a new playbook.

I also think he's going to cave. Why would he effectively end his NFL career (in the best situation he's ever been in) over a couple million dollars? I just don't see it happening for a journeyman that has only made an 8 figure salary once in his career and hasn't earned over $4 million since 2012 (not to mention he has five kids).

Wow. Kellen? Full circle! I can probably find 3000 threads right here on TGG demanding the ball be given to Kellen!

Fitz or no Fitz we need to see what we have in Geno with this regime. If every freaking QB that shit the bed under similar circumstances as a totally unprepared rookie would have been released after the second season, the NFL would have probably missed on many good ones, like Eli for one. He did miserable with a much better background.
It would be good to see Fitz back but in no way in hell he is worth 15M. The fact that he had one of the best QB performances in Jets recent history is a pathetic indictment as to how miserable our draft and more specifically our QB selection has been since Kenny O'Brien.

What do we owe to Geno? He's a fourth year second round pick that got two years to start. We owe him nothing.

Eli threw 24 TD/17 INT for 3,762 yards en route to an 11-5 record. How is that anywhere near comparable to Geno throwing 13/13 for 2,500 yards on a 4-12 team and benched for Michael Vick whom was just looking for a paycheck.

Most have seen all they need to with Geno, and I'd imagine our coaching staff and front office is not too happy about not having Fitzpatrick under contract. If they were, they would have shut the negotiating doors a month ago.

I disagree here. People keep saying this, but Geno is terrible. Football is not rocket science. He was terrible at WVU, terrible his first 2 years as a Jet, terrible in relief against the Raiders last year, what else do you truly need to see? The Jets have drafted Bryce Petty in the 4th Round in 2015, Christian Hackenberg in the 2nd Round in 2016, yet people feel the Jets have interest in seeing what they have in a 2013 2nd Round Pick? Clearly they have moved on and rightfully so.

Watching a guy who can play with confidence and inspire confidence in those around him could be one of the most important lessons for a young QB - they all need it, their development won't be stunted by it. Unless something drops down out of the sky, Fitzpatrick gives the best chance to win the most games in 2016. You may very well be correct that the playoffs are a long shot, but why concede anything by using an inferior quarterback?

So now Fitzpatrick is injury prone too? You guys act like any money Fitzpatrick gets is coming from your family food budget. The only question that needs to be asked now is what quarterback gives the Jets the chance to win the most games this year? The answer is clearly Fitzpatrick.

We don't owe Geno anything but it's dumb for a franchise to give up on a high 2nd round QB considering the circumstances

They see Geno more than us so I'm sure they have a better idea and they're also not dumb enough to just throw away someone that can possibly be fixed

No we act like that money can be put to better use for our favorite football team in the future

Fitz has always sucked as a starter in this league you guys just don't get it man....A few mediocre years and a few bad seasons...no upside, no arm strength, no playoffs: the career of Ryan Fitzpatrick in a nutshell

Terrible at WVU? Complete garbage statement

Clearly the Jets have moved on that's why as of today Geno is the starting QB of the NY Jets lol

Okay, take your pick of Smith, Petty or Hackenburg and crack open their nutshell and show us how it is better than Fitzpatrick's. Remember, it needs to be better, not just have the potential to be better with different coaches and different players because whichever guy turns out to be the QB will have that same staff and team behind him.

And if you think "the Jets have moved on" from Fitzpatrick you haven't been paying attention.
