Revis is the face of the franchise right now. Why do you think we have two players holding out for absolute top dollar? When we resigned Revis on his terms last year we set the course. If we stay on it we're screwed. We're going to have this situation with every good young player the Jets have moving forward unless the team gets a handle on the situation now. If you set a culture of "my money" as the culture in the locker room you will pay for it forever.
Fixed your post. Do you even keep up with football? This is every team, every player. With very few exceptions, professional athletes don't give a half baked crap about TEAM, they care about ME and my MONEY. _
I agree....just thought it was interesting that he said Geno would start either way as it's the first time I've heard anyone say that Even on here with all of the damn Genobots
I'm wondering why you think it's interesting. He has absolutely no access to the team right now. That would be like Rex Ryan saying he thinks Geno will start regardless of whether Fitz signs. Or Pee Wee Herman for that matter. In contrast, Bowles said today that Fitz is the starter as soon as he walks in the door assuming it's not week 4 of training camp. _
This is a simple answer, it's time to pass the torch. It was time when we first traded him. Who cares about ticket sales and jersey sales? Jets have created a Dynasty ruling the back pages. I think the Jets want to do some actual winning now. You always keep your best players.
Just interesting or maybe strange? he would say that of all things.....nothing more Mostly because I never heard anyone with the team or not suggest Fitz would sign and be in a competition
Good post..DR was the best at what he does Now we are locked up for millions (28) till 2017 And people bitch about Fitz ...makes no sense
"Was" the best......now he's a hasbeen former Patriot eating up Mo Wilkersons cap space for an extension.
But re-signing him to a huge contract last year wasn't bad because the Jets had a huge amount of cap space and he wouldn't cause cap problems down the road. Same thing with Mo. Just a different face on the problem. No team ever has enough cap space over time. It just looks like they're ok in some years because all people are looking at is the one year and maybe the next year at the outside. The NFL has a hard cap. There's no way around it over time. If you try to buy cap space now by restructuring you're just creating a locked in cap down the road with less flexibility. A game that produces the number of career-ending injuries and injury-based declines that the NFL does just doesn't allow for packing the cap "because you'll be fine in a few years." You won't be fine in a few years. You'll be sitting with not enough cap space and too much to do (like this year's team a year after 70+ million in cap space) and your fortunes will suffer as a result.
Revis was still very good last season...He hurt his wrist towards the end of the year and couldn't jam receivers And he's so crafty and never really relied on pure speed so he should be good for another few seasons as he ages atleast....I could see him playing free safety eventually like Charles Woodson to end his career Don't understand the hate at all
The hate comes from the fact that Revis is post-prime and getting paid like he's prime and if he's not Revis Island any more what are we paying him like he's Revis Island for?
He did a great job on Dez Bryant in week 15. He had a good year. The wrist obviously could have effected him, especially the way he is aggressive at the point of attack. The way he handled Dez Bryant it wouldn't surprise me if he aggravated it then too. Me either. I ignore it at this point. An all time great Jet.
He was still a top cornerback and will still be very good for a couple more years Maybe he's a little overpaid but every free agent seems like they're overpaid these days....Take a quick look at the contracts the Giants handed out this off season I'd rather overypay a little for a great hall of fame player a little past his prime than a mediocre player.... My problem is people should find something bigger to complain about than maybe overpaying Revis a little bit. It's not the worst thing in the world
I don't know about that. It's about the business side of him and the perceived selfishness. Woody wanted him back. Those negotiations of the past worked both ways. Woody regretted the way things went, he said it, and appeared to want to make things right.
Yes, free agents are overpaid. Bad teams generally overpay them to look like they're not as bad as people think they are. The Revis rehire was a bad move that produced some short term benefits and is now biting us. You win by drafting good players consistently and making good decisions about how you use your cap space to supplement that. As long as the hard cap is an issue and free agency is around that's going to be true. Part of the error in re-signing Revis was that he's post-prime and likely to suffer both performance declines and injuries as he goes post 30. That's the normal course of events. The other part was that we just paid too much for him. Belichik knew what a prime CB was worth on a team poised to win a Super Bowl. He paid Revis $12M for that season. We are not poised to win a Super Bowl and so we did what a team not poised to win a Super Bowl often does and overpaid through the nose for a player that we could market. Now we're just going to have to hope that we get more like the 2009 Revis the next couple of years than the 2015 version. Not that the 2015 version was bad, because he was good, but paying a CB what we're paying Revis he'd better be the 2009 version or we way overpaid on the cap.
What is his hit this year, and next? IDK. I thought it wasn't restrictive for the team moving forward I will tell you this tho. He's gonna have a great year this year, watch.
