Right but the contention is that maybe his value is peaked right now or within the next month -- assuming he performs in camp.

I don't see how the Jets name him the starter and let's say performs amazing and gets 5 wins (trade deadline is Oct. 30. So the Jet's will have competed in 8 games.) So the Jets would be 5-3 and then you blow up the season and trade Teddy just because he has value.

I don't see it happening that way. The team would have to leave him there.

The only way I see them trading him in season is if he gets the starting job, leads the team to sub .500 going into the trade deadline and they give Darnold the ball and cut ties with Teddy.

Even then, in this scenario, his value plummets and you're probably looking at a 5th or 6th rounder in compensation.

If a team wants him to start, the best time to get him would be in training camp so he has time to learn the playbook and mesh with the receivers. So if an injury happens to another QB in camp (like the Tannehill situation), I think Teddy's value will be its highest.

The only scenario in which I'd trade Teddy now is another team being so desperate for a QB that they give an offer that's too good to refuse.

Your logic is completely reasonable. I just don’t want to trade him. Regardless of when it would happen.

Oh sure, if that kind of offer comes our way, definitely take it. I doubt it happens, but yes if so.

Fair. I really like the player too but I fear he won't settle for a back up job for the next 4 seasons.

I’m sure he wouldn’t. I just want the Jets to get this right. Tired of the terrible QB play as I’m sure we all are. If Sam bombs out, it would be nice to have a backup plan.

The biggest advantage of drafting a QB in the first round is getting high quality play out of a cheap QB for 5 years. Franchise tagging another QB a completely removes that critical edge. The future of this franchise needs to sink or swim with Darnold, even if Teddy plays well.

He's still only 25 and you wouldn't get much in a trade for him

Bingo. This is where the discussion ends IMO. You don't spend three 2nd round picks for the 3rd pick to then jettison the player you took in order to resign someone else for big money a year later. That makes no sense whatsoever. Horrible return on investment.

Right now they would get nothing. He was a free agent 2 months ago and he signed a one year deal for peanuts, giving an indication of the demand for his services (or lack thereof)

I personally would like to sit Darnold. That means best case scenario Teddy is the best QB in camp. In which case, great, play him and let his value increase.

As for what his value might be at mid season. It’s almost impossible to tell but it would be higher than right now no matter what. If he plays he increases his value, and there are always injuries and desperate teams , also increasing his value

I've been asking everyone who says this the same question: why? Wouldn't you rather he wins the starting job?

The hardest thing to find in sports is a good qb. You don’t let that get away regardless of what you might have. Hard to believe jet fans don’t see that, considering the past and all.

OK, then he sits, doesn't up his trade value and the guy you traded 3 second round picks for walks in 5 years. You get nothing from him. Still a horrible return on investment.

Really could careless about roi, i do however care about winning. If teddy wins I’d rather not trade him to see if Sam can win.

Then you had no issue with pissing away a second round pick on Hackenberg I assume?

I agree, win at all costs, but 1. you'd have to be sure Teddy is the guy that's going to win based off ONE year and 2. that's a really really really bad use of assets.

I'm in the Bridgewater over McCown camp.

Going on the point everyone is making, I just don't see any way Bridgewater signs an extended deal with the Jets as a back up. Therefore the franchise tag would be the only way to guarantee he stays.

But, just to be clear, the franchise tag is $23.189 million for QBs in 2018. For 2019 it will obviously increase and there's no telling by how much with Ryan & Rodgers deals looming.

I just don't see this FO tying up 30m+ in the QB position.

We wouldn't be having this problem if the Jets hadn't traded up.

    Stupid GM.

No issue at all. I will never have a problem with a gm taking shots at getting a qb. If he is wrong he won’t be here long anyway.
Now 1. If teddy takes us to the playoffs that will be 2 teams he has taken to the playoffs and still would have a bigger body of work then the guy you are letting him walk for.
    2. As long as you win it does not matter how you allocate your resources. I could careless if Mac loses the next 3 years of picks at the monthly gms poker game as long as we are winning.
The gms poker game is a real thing. How else do you explain broadway giving up a first for Doug jolley?
