I'm totally against that approach. Not only would we tie up too big a portion of the cap in the secondary, but it would more than likely remove any chances that the Jets would have of getting one of the QBs in next year's draft. IMO that move is the same kind of competitive rebuild crap that Mac did 2 years ago trying to fix the secondary in FA rather than in the draft. It doesn't really matter that the players are a couple of years younger. It's still the same thing.
I have to disagree with this opinion ......while I understand this whole " rebuild the secondary in one offseason " plan seems like a flimsy quick fix - the players mentioned that Mac is interested in seem to be quality players and they are more than a couple of years younger than Revis, Cromartie, Gilchrist etc.... For one thing you cannot rebuild entirely through the draft. The Jets need ALOT of help and need to hit on just about every early pick to be competitive as is. If Mac spends wisely on YOUNG FAs for the secondary then in theory he can concentrate on other areas for the draft . This year both free agency and the draft are loaded with quality defensive backs. I can understand your concern about the Jets being too competitive in 2017 and therefore not having a high enough draft pick to get a potential franchise QB in 2018. I've thought about the same thing honestly. But the facts are the NFL is a business and any team - let alone a NY team - is going to have reservations about purposely tanking for the "hope" that they are bad enough to draft a "potential " franchise QB . If they see a QB they really believe is their guy next year they will have to fork up draft picks to move up. That's the reality. Put it this way....if they were to hit on their FA acquisitions this month and draft 4 possibly 5 decent starters next month, win 7 or 8 games this year, go into next off season basically a franchise QB away from being solid contenders for the next decade, I would have no problem trading high picks away for the next 2 years or so for a franchise QB assuming most of the rest of team is in place. Just another way of looking at it ......
You can't go into a draft with basically no starting secondary unless you're an expansion team. A total rebuild is one thing..non competitive is another. Are we just gonna start a bunch of rookies in the back end? I mean...if they were the right mix at the right draft spots I guess I could get behind that..but than again..we're ignoring the offense..again?! Gotta eliminate the big plays on D. The easiest way to do that is through free agency. I'd much rather the Jets go into the draft concentrating on the offense. It's long LONG overdue.
Is this a legitimate report or speculation? Not a huge deal, but I hate when stuff like this is leaked. It already sets us up for a bidding war He's a good player. I just hope Maccagnan learned a lot from his 2015 fiasco. It appears as though he has, I just hope that he's also learned not to waste all his time on one player. Have to spread the wealth.
Nice work KTJF and that stratergy works for me. We need to move Skrine also back to the slot. He is awful in space.
No one said that we had to agree. I totally understand your perspective and it has some merit and worth. That said, I think one can rebuild mostly via the draft, it will just take a little longer. Tell GB and the Steelers that they can't win building their team solely through the draft. There are also starting positions one can fill in FA that aren't as costly as starting CBs, such as TEs, OGs, and depth-type/STs players. Think about this for a minute. Even though the FAs he's interested in are 26 or 27, that's still 4-6 years older than the players Mac has drafted and will draft this year. There will be a pretty small window where the team could compete before the FAs retire. By signing young FAs, if Mac drafts well this year, the team could be "competitive" sooner, but unless Hack or Petty develop into the Jets FQB or they take a QB in this draft and he proves to be a FQB, they may be stuck without one again. You may be willing to trade a boatload of picks, but can't count on being able to trade up. Lots of teams need QBs. The Jets could have used Mariota a couple of years ago, and the Titans weren't willing to deal. Any team that needs a QB and has a QB that's a pretty certain thing sitting there at their pick is NOT gonna trade their pick, I don't care if you offer them your first born child. As I said, I have no problem signing a couple of second tier CBs and a FS, I just don't think the Jets should spend big money on a top tier CB.
I didn't say anything about just starting a bunch of rookies. Pryor is a veteran. If they sign MacDougald, he' s a veteran. Burris has a year's experience and the other Jets CBs have varying years of experience. As I said, I have no problems signing two cheaper second tier CBs for competition, and even a starting FS as well. That would make the team competitive. They could add in a CB and/or a FS in the draft and they'd be competitive and rebuilding the secondary. You're talking about making it a top 10 D, and that's the same crap the Jets have been doing and works against building the team the right way.
We both have valid points. You are right about trading up in the draft. You have to have a willing partner and hope that team ((obviously one of the worst in the league ) doesn't need a QB. They don't have to trade and have the team wanting the trade by the balls. A lot of it is luck . Go back to the 2008 draft for example. Let's say the Jets right then decided they didn't want to go with Favre and wanted Matt Ryan. They trade from # 6 to # 2 with the Rams and give up their. # 1 picks through 2010. In hindsight they trade Gholsfon, Sanchez, and Wilson for Matt Ryan......LOL...... And then you have the Redskins trading a boatload of picks to the Rams to draft Griffin. He had one great year, got hurt , and they turned to a guy they drafted the same year ........crazy league.
Looks like we are tanking. If so, why bring an expensive free agent? Tank properly. Get the first pick next year. Grab one of the promising QB's and shoot for the stars. I might be wrong but I don't understand why we are after expensive free agents. If Todd is in love with his X's, let Sheldon bring him a few of his whores. Good morning from India(shit hole) by the way.
Any big splash in FA = disaster in the waiting. There, I said it. 49ers did it. And they won the SB when they pull that off too. P.S. Yeah. Todd Bowles ain't a genius that Bill Walsh is - so there ya go. Just saying, ya know.
I agree with this with one exception. I am in the camp for getting Cousins, this is my one exception. The only reason I would not go this course is if the FO thought Sam Darnold out of USC to be a sure thing and it be a lock that we'd be terrible enough to have the #1 overall to select him (long-shot is an understatement) . If we're out of the running for cousins I would want the one larger FA expense to be Riley Reiff. Then sparsely pickup a few 2nd level DB's. I like Micah Hyde personally. From there I would like to see building the rest of the O-line up through young guys in the draft. To what Zach is saying he's spot on. I don't like the idea of going out and picking up 3 or 4 late 20's guys that have already peaked with large contracts that eats up all or most of the cap with no rollover. I do feel ok with Reiff, as O-linemen play at a high level well into their 30's unlike all other positions minus QB.
So building a top 10 D is not building the team the right way...? You are all about taking younger cheaper options in the secondary...a fine idea in theory..but yearly free agency has taught us that the DB market is pricey & you get what you pay for. Pass coverage has become too valuable a commodity & you can either cover or you cant. If you can...odds are there is a team willing to pay you a premium salary. Right now...the Jets can't cover..I suppose you could decide to move forward being content w. that fact...but the reality is..if you plan on doing anything about the god awful pass D....you're gonna have to pay..and likely more than you'd really like. I see DBs as solely mercenaries who you can essentially plug & play. I understand Seattle has built much of their success on what they drafted in their back 7 ...but thats the exception to the rule. It's proven to be a difficult position to scout & I'm not sure if there is real tangible benefit from building a young back 7 corps given how hard the position is to scout & again..where the league is going defensively. It makes sense to churn them & burn them as needed.Find sure things...in other words..guys who CAN cover..preferably under 27 years old.. Let Mac draw up another team friendly contract that gives us an out after 2-3 years & move on to other positions. After 2-3 years if things aren't working out...do the same thing over again. Mac chose the wrong guys 2 years ago....but I don't think his idea was wrong...at least for this specific position..
Please keep Pryor. He brings the fear of God to opposing players trying to cross the middle. I love having that. Gilchrist was a solid pick up. We had no body at deep safety and Gilchrist played solid for us. But, he suffered a bad injury last season so it's probably time to cut him. (Lets be like NE, cut players a year early).
Looks like Cousins ain't coming here. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...e-way-trade-involving-kirk-cousins-tony-romo/ And Kurt, you can approach that defensive philosophy in more than one way. Having that top-tier free agent is certainly one such way. If that one shut-down cover corner is the last thing I need for the championship run, I might certainly look that way too. [Jerry did and won his last SB with that.] But is it all there is? I am inclined to say no. First and foremost, FA is very cap-intensive. My philosophy as of late is always that, if you build your team through free agency [like the Jets might right now] then your team is destined for mediocrity, and that's the best possible outcome. [This is a very simple logic as well - really.] If that does not work, then the cap figure will fuck the team for years to come. All the more reason to stay away from it unless you [really] have to. Secondly, Jets have invested heavily in Wilkerson already, and they might do just that with Leonard Williams. If the young LB corps start playing up to their potential, this front seven will generate some serious pass rush - which will necessarily negate the need for top-rated free agent in the back four. I do think that Jenkins and Mauldin are capable of playing decent OLB roles in 3-4, and Darron Lee will make a good cover ILB. That's where Bowles comes in. If he is as proficient in scheming the defense as he is supposed to be, he should be able to shield the deficiencies of the young secondary [if they draft their back four that is.] I am not confident of this at all, but then, I am not confident that a few pricey FA CBs would fix this secondary either. [I have no confidence that Bowles will be able to devise any sound coverage scheme, regardless of the talent level.] If the back four is fucked either way, I'd choose to go cheap.
I think Tony Jefferson would like to play with the Raiders( from his Twitter account). Now do the Raiders have interest, and are they willing to pay him.( eventually comes down to whose going to pay him the most). I can't see a player in high demand coming to the Jets if he has options.( price you pay for having a terrible year, and blowing up the roster.
That's another discussion entirely. You guys wanna tank..I'm not totally opposed to that..but understand..at some point we HAVE to use our cap funds or risk loss of draft picks & league fines. Also be prepared to see record setting bad from our Pass D...
Williams will be coming due for a new contract in a year or two. Enunwa, Simon, Qvale and ASJ will be FAs next year. Almost certainly the first two will be-resigned, maybe the last two will be as well. By the time the Jets sign a FA LT (if they can) this FA period, and other FAs (QB? RT? C? OG? CB? FS? TE? ILB? K? RB?), they will use a good chunk of their cap space or will have it available to use next year. I'm not worried about Mac not using the cap space. I want him to be prudent in its use. IMO going out and trying to sign a top 10 secondary when they don't have their FQB wouldn't be prudent, and would most likely in fact prevent their be able to find a FQB.
