Morton had some really good passing concepts. He got receivers open. He was a first year play caller. Bates had experience calling plays. Bates was far worse. Should we put the Browns game on? A run on every first down and a screen on pretty much every 3rd down.

He could've ran the ball more yes, but Morton was better despite taking forever to get the call in.

I thought the joke with Morton was we ran it up the gut 1st and 2nd down and then thought about a throw lol really under using Powell for the older back we got from the bears, bloody name won't come to me lol you will get no argument from me that Bates was useless and should stayed on his walking holiday.

Pretty good is all you can say until we start playing football. New coach some good additions and a maturing QB. This can be more than pretty good we just won't know until this groups gets on the field.

At the end of the Darnold plays well the Jets will have a good season.

    Matt Forte.

His forte was actually earning $12 million for doing very little.

Macc's legacy may be as simple as Idzik may have done better in the middle rounds, in even fewer seasons! Winters and Enunwa vs. Herndon and Shell. I'm sure we can add more names but the point is that he has not shown the eye for talent we reasonably expected when he joined the team. We knew Idzik came in with little to no scouting experience. Macc has not stockpiled picks; he has not picked well

the best defense for him seems to be he didn't muff no brainers, e.g., Jamal should've been top 3; Leonard top 3 maybe top 1, etc. I'm not trying to minimize the value of not muffing those picks. There are plenty of instances where absolute top picks are duds, but we need much more than that to be a successful franchise. We need an institutionalized philosophy and identity to guide our selection of coaches, players, development staff, even strength training. There are lots that can win, e.g., tough and smart; athletic and sore losers, etc. If we have such an identity at the moment, Macc is keeping those cards close to his chest.

The point about Mahomes is being a bit twisted too IMO. The issue isn't whether Mahomes is a system QB or better than Sam. It's that Macc passed on both Mahomes and Watson (and if he loved Trubitsky he got outplayed there too). He had no plan at QB. He's been a jellyfish, floating in the current, hoping some good luck would break his way.

And the bigger point is that since KC knows what the hell they're doing (and they have a "brand" of football) they moved up to get Mahomes even though they had a winning QB at the moment. That's what good teams do; they know what they want (right or wrong) and build a team around that identity. every time KC picks (same true for all the good teams) -- in whatever round -- you think they just stole someone (whether that proves true or not).

Another poster mentioned we now seem to be tough up the middle on defense, Q and L Williams, Avery and CJ, Adams. I'm looking forward to that; I'm also curious whether this just sort of happened, whether it was Macc, whether it was Gregg talking to Macc

As I said before, I'd rather we win and i eat crow about Macc, but IMO there is nothing about him that indicates "winner".

Hopefully they will be good and have a good season. If so, that won't change the fact that they very easily could have been better and a strong case can easily be made that with a better GM, they would be better, and would in fact, already be a playoff team.

Probably a career ender as well tbh, he was already slipping down the ranks and now somebody will have to be willing to give him a chance after what is a nasty injury.

Maybe he can get a job as a spokesman for the company that someone mentioned after his ass-wiping celebration.

This is why Macc is, and should be, on the hot seat:

From Turn On The Jets -
    http://turnonthejets.com/2019/05/turn-on-the-jets-12-pack-new-york-jets-post-nfl-draft-thoughts/

1 – Offensive Line – The Jets potential for problems on the offensive line go beyond settling with Jonotthan Harrison as a prospective starter at center, a player who has not played more than 60% of the offensive snaps in a season since 2015 and as recently as 2017, only played 10% of them. We have seen the trickle down effect of poor center play in recent years from both Spencer Long and Wesley Johnson and we don’t have any tangible proof that Harrison can be a competent 16 game starter. It may be easier to feel good about his prospects if his surrounding talent was better but it is littered with question marks.

The most stable player has been Kelvin Beachum, who has been both durable and competent. Kelechi Osemele was one of the best guards in the NFL during the 2016 and 2017 seasons but is coming off an injury plagued 2018. There is reason for optimism he can return to his former self but it is far from guaranteed. Elsewhere, Brian Winters is a below average starter who has been banged up fairly consistently throughout his career (prior to last year when he was healthy, he played about 75% of the team’s snaps in both 2016 and 2017). Brandon Shell is returning from a major injury and has missed between 2-4 games each of the past two years, playing leas than 70% of the team’s snaps in 2017.

We will find out right out of the gate how big of a problem this unit is, as they face four of the league’s best defensive fronts in their first six games: Buffalo, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Dallas while also playing New England twice, who is always crafty with how they get after the quarterback. Let’s hope this isn’t a 2014 redux where a team with a shaky secondary got a gauntlet of passing offenses early in the season, which put their record in too big of a hole to dig out of.

2 – Cornerback – At cornerback, Daryl Roberts did play 64% of the defensive snaps last year but prior to that was well under 5o% in each of his previous two seasons. You would feel better about him if Trumaine Johnson looked like he could live up to his contract last year or they were more proven at slot cornerback (Brian Poole is likely to be a lateral move from Buster Skrine). Johnson is a critical player to the Jets success’ this season and could help make a shaky cornerback group on paper more palatable.
    **************************************************************************************************************************************

Instead of addressing these two gaping holes with premium picks, Macc chose - once again! - to use those picks on "D". Even if both those picks pan out, how much more difference will they make vs. continuing to have these two gaping holes? Even if Macc had addressed the OL with his first pick, or at least the 2nd, that would've made a huge improvement. Allowing the OL to continue to be sub-par is professional malfeasance.

My main concern is that beyond our R1 pick seem we get very little return in general. A good draft gets you 1 - 2 immediate starters and 2 - 3 good depth players. Mac whiffs too many times on the post R1 picks so we don't have a long term succession plan as players get 'long in the tooth' or its not worth paying players the conclusions of their contracts.

  17. If the OL gets Darnold/Bell killed hes gone..its as simple as that.

We knew not all of our needs were getting filled in one draft nor is that always the best course of action bc you end up building a team on paper rather tan finding the best talent.

    When it comes to OL..

    1. Team plays a Zone scheme which deteriorates the prospect pool in and of itself

    2. Gase loves 3 step drops & Darnold evades defenders extremely well.Minimizes some of the potential negative impact

    3. Drafting and starting a bunch of rookies/too many new faces on the OL is likely more dangerous than sticking w the current group due to cohesion/assignment football

    4. 2020 draft & FA is considered very strong in OL w both Beachem & Shell’s contracts expiring

Looking like at least 2 new starters to OL next offseason when we should be thinking about true ascension.

Im not making excuses..MAC is gonna live or die w this OL decision but i think this is his long term rationale concerning OL

Polite appears to have been rated very highly in spite of the phantom "character" issues. Edoga looks ready to contribute.

I don't disagree. I always hope that true pro ball will open a few eyes and make 'character issues' players give it their all to take the opportunity that the NFL can give, also knowing that it takes many a player a couple of years at least to make the transition. I feel that again we have too many 'reaches' or 'projects' this year outside our BPA pick in r1.

That is crying over spilled Milk. You could also make the argument we could have been worse. This off season it is hard to criticize what he has done.
