Assuming Mac was told to win now and Mac knew the roster sucked but was willing to blow smoke up the owners ass to get the job, he failed to do that.

From my perspective I feel like the Jets should be significantly improved this season not only player wise on both sides of the ball but coaching wise as well with Gase and Williams running their own quasi-independent fiefdoms on offense and defense. I never sensed the last coaching staff was bringing a whole hell of a lot to the table at all and I hope and expect that to change this season.

Better coaches with better (or in some cases like Herndon or Darnold more experienced) players should yield better results. We should at least give better results a chance to happen imho. If 2019 turns into some 5 win pile of muck then at that point I think heads should roll viciously. There just shouldn't be any excuse for that to happen this season.

    Spot on Biggs!

And I want to echo what you've said now several times: while the homers here are slapping themselves (and Macc) on the back for having such a great draft, the teams in the AFC-E did better. Most all of these guys are assuming that:

    A. All Macc's picks - including his risky ones for key positions like Edge and OL - will work out and not only be starters, but will be above average at least. They're overlooking the obvious that draft picks are crap shoots, even the best of them.
    B. That none of the other AFC-E team improved.

While I too hope that the Jets improve and make the playoffs, I can just as easily see them finishing last in the division again. Macc had better hope that doesn't come to pass. The biggest difference that separates the Jets from the Bills and Dolphins is Darnold and Le'Veon, and if they stay healthy the odds are good that the Jets will do better than those two teams, But if either one gets hurt, all bets are off. And what's one of the most important things to keep your QB and RB safe? A good OL. There's the problem. The best coaching and talent in the world won't help you if your talent isn't on the field. Macc had better pray that Five & Dime OL holds together.

Excuse me how is it not true?

That is exactly what happened in those years, it was a quick brief summary moving forward, did I need to list all the WR flops as well and any of the other draft flops that you decided not to mention.

Sometimes I think you are quick to jump in or you are reading my posts in a completely different way than they are intended.

As for Fitz, as much as he is a journeyman QB that will let you down when needed, just who was it that broke the TD record of our franchise in that 10-6 season

Pretty much the same as the above, it was just a quick timeline of brief facts just to say that Mac really hasn't been rebuilding for 5 seasons., it was not meant for this level of scrutiny. Everything listed happened in that timeline and that is all it was meant to show.

I am certainly not arguing that it could have been better or we should have invested in the OL sooner, that wasn't the point of the post though :)

D-day isn't now IMO. It will be in training camp

If any of the high priced FAs come in fat or lazy ... not good for Macc. Diligence should check if the guy really wants to play football, or just get paid

Similarly, any of the draftees come in looking like Hackenberg or a host of other clueless picks of the past, and he's in trouble

The fact that he supposedly saved his ass by throwing his coach under the bus (i.e., not enough input from CS) and then has tension this early with the new CS c'mon man. Guy has done nothing. Let's not pretend he is some football royalty here destined to turn a franchise around. He was recommended by Casserly who is a bit pitiful lately

And with Macc BPA means nothing. With someone like the Pats it means something; they're looking for smart and tough football players (e.g., above athleticism). Same too for Chiefs; they're looking for electricity (willing to overlook character), and so on. NO one knows what Macc is looking for (and this includes Macc) so saying BPA Is meaningless because it's not judged against anything

Oh stop with the "homers" you are a better poster than that.

Biggs wasn't spot on btw because he misconstrued my post and its intention of only showing that Mac had two years knocked off before the rebuild truly begun, it had nothing to do with the drafts in any of those years, it was a brief timeline of bullet points, season by season that is all.

Well I don't know what to call those who simply have their eyes closed to the real possibility that this team isn't that good - compared to the other teams in their division. But I see your point - I don't like being called names so I apologize.

But as to the other point, your original post in essence says Macc hasn't done too bad a job: "Ready to attack in Year 4". I assume you're counting this as "Year 4"? Even so, I'm not sure that Macc is looking at this year as "playoffs or bust". According to what Chris Johnson said, he hasn't given Macc a "mandate", and in looking at how he's gone about things, I would say that he's still in "rebuild mode" in his mind. How else can you explain not focusing more on OL, and continuing to build up the defense? Not having a direct line to Macc I have no idea, and maybe he's got a different plan, but so far in five years his plans haven't exactly produced results.

I accept that Macc isn't likely to be fired right now, and so am prepared to see how things turn out this season, but they need to either make the playoffs or be eliminated on the last day. In other words, WINS are needed at this point, not "improvement" or "moral victories". And frankly, to Bigg's point, the other teams in the AFC-E have improved themselves a lot, so it's no guarantee that the Jets will do any better than split with them. The other thing in their favor is Strength of Schedule which on paper says they'll have weaker teams to play.

Anything can happen, and "On any given Sunday" and all that, so they might do a lot better than I think, but the opposite is also true. Over 55 years I've seen high hopes come crashing down too often, so forgive me if I remain in the "Show Me" mode.

No, my other post says Mac hasn't been rebuilding for 5 seasons implied by the guy I quoted said, that is the point, nothing else, the timeline was written to just point an odd thing out that happened in that season, it was as simple as that, not really worthy of all this analysis as to all the ins and outs of the larger picture, I was on a 15 minute break in a layby whilst doing my driving job.

Again in the second part of your post you are bringing in the "how do you explain not investing in the OL" respectfully again what has that got to do with my original reply to the other poster, it is a totally different subjects, your reply only come about due to the post from Biggs, this is what infuriates me when posts get misread and quoted then the next poster comes along and takes his view from the wrongly assumed point of the quoter (Biggs in this case)

Sometimes people look to over complicate things, go back and read it again.

    King Koopa said
"I feel we can make some noise in the AFC playoff race and then really make our move in 2020"
    JETS81 said
"5 years after he got the job...yea, I hope we’ll be contenders too."

My reply was to the 5 years part, due to the first two years being win now one close to success and the other failing the script then being ripped up, it really is only 3 seasons

    K'OB said
Year 1 10-6 and should have been play-offs cheers Fitz.
    Year 2 same players flopped

1 - Year 3 stripped bare of vets and rebuild begins
    2
    - Year 4 welcome our rookie FQB
3 - Year 5 hello top class RB, centre and CB required and a couple more OL wouldn't go amiss.

4 - Year 6 hopefully only fine tuning required, OL needs met and ready to go.

So ready to attack by year 4 of the rebuild, I can't see how that is a terrible situation?

Year 4 of the rebuild is next season and we will be ready to attack, come on mate it was written in the damned timeline all along

Also, I clearly state OL needs met, as well btw it is there listed in season 6 which is 20/21

Always a pleasure to see people read and take in what you have typed, especially after they pick you to pieces later on for it :p

Why's he on the hot seat? We just had one of our greatest offseasons ever with 3 All-Pro additions all in their prime (one an O-Lineman). Robby and Quincy are still here. Some say we drafted the best player in college football @ #3 overall in Q.Williams. Took an O-Lineman who protected for Sam and didn't allow one sack/QB hit during the 3rd round.ETC. Le'Veon Bell for our offense. Drafted Sam just last year. Hot seat? Hah

As a Mac hater, I think he's gained some momentum, but he could've had a better draft IMO, the last 2 years specifically. Taking Shepard was a bad move IMO. Needs to fix the offensive line still. he should've signed a center for competition at least if they thought Harrison is the guy. We've seen what happened in the past with Wesley Johnson and Wayne Hunter. It can ruin seasons and it can ruin a player.

I can agree that its not worth the time to go back and slice and dice what you said and the responses since have been to attempt to come to some "understanding". Let me just say that I disagree with your original contention which (and I hope I'm not putting words in your mouth) is that Macc hasn't really done that bad of a job since we're really only in Year 3 of a rebuild.

That's where I disagree. First, that's absolving him of any responsibility for the first two years. Does anyone in any job get that kind of free pass? I could MAYBE give him Year 1, but only if I knew for sure that the Johsons gave him a mandate to win with what he had, but we actually don't even know that. But as I said in another post, if he was any good at his job he would've seen the talent on the team wasn't good enough and would've begun his rebuild Year 2, and if he couldn't convince the Johnsons of that then again, I question his fitness for the job. Still, most GMs get 3 years to produce a winning record. Macc has had that, and was even given the luxury of knowing that he wouldn't be fired if he didn't make the playoffs last year, but they were far from playoff contenders. And yet, he was again given a chance to sign FAs and do a draft.

But I also disagree with your giving him sort of a pass on what you refer to as Year 1, which is really Year 3. The "stripping of vets" should not have precluded him from signing and drafting good replacements, which is how I read your assessment. I don't think he showed enough urgency given the state of the roster, especially the QB spot. Maybe that's my concern in a nutshell: Macc hasn't shown enough urgency to getting this team back to the playoffs. If you think differently, we can agree to disagree.

He still has his job so get over that and Judge this years off-season. We have had a pretty good off-season on paper thus far.

Well I’ve never claimed he was perfect so I really don’t disagree with anything you just said. I didn’t like the Shepard pick and still don’t but we don’t quite know for sure yet whether it was a bad pick. Either way if Darnold and Herndon continue to progress the way I think they will then last draft was a good draft regardless of Shepard improves at all. We don’t know about this draft yet, I do like it on paper, although I would’ve preferred a trade down and an offensive focused draft.

I also agree with the OL but he did bring in who I think was the best OLineman that changed teams this offseason. I also wanted Paradis but don’t know enough about why he is not a Jet right now, it’s really not hard to believe that he wanted no part of NY and if that’s true then there wasn’t a damn thing Mac could’ve done about it. I also don’t think there was another good option at center(was not at all high on Morse) without trading down. Judging by the value the other teams that traded back in 1st got back, I can understand why he didn’t move back and if he did he likely would’ve gotten killed for giving up the 3rd pick for nothing.

But where does it say Mac has done a good job, this is the problem, you are seeing something that is not written, I highlighted our FQB signing as it is the single most significant part of the rebuild, I then listed a Superstar RB joining as again it is a massive plus for us fans, not Mac, us.

I will again attempt to go back to the first two years as they are a free pass in the sense that they are not part of the rebuild, that is it sorted, plain and simple, I am not absolving of the 2nd year and the resigning of Fitz because it is and was not part of the original point of the post, all of these secondary points you are making are all part of a different conversation, it was not part of my point in the timeline post in the slightest, again I am not saying anything you have subsequently posted isn't true, just that it was not part of my text, it has come about due to the reply that Biggs posted.

I have tried to explain that part over and over, I can't seem to make it stick though :)

I will address a little of these secondary issues you have in a separate conversation though.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most GM's get 3 years to produce a winning record - he did produce one in year 1 10-6, he then went with the players that broke records in this 10-6 season, namely Fitz and Marshall and both were utter shit in season 2, (how you can even say he should have persuaded the owners to rebuild a season after missing out on a play-off spot only due to Fitz blowing it as is his wont in big games, do you really think the head Johnson would have said "yeah, a rebuild that is just the very thing after a 10-6 Mac, get on with it" what more likely went down was get them all resigned and go again, you could see Mac didn't want Fitz back but unless some real proof comes out we will be second-guessing forever.)

Now this then elicited a change in the mind of our owner but it didn't really as it was a "new owner" that rubber-stamped a move to scrap the lot and start again from scratch, so in Macs third year he has now stripped the squad of most of the vets and given a remit that a losing season didn't matter, same again last season and now here we are in season 3 of the rebuild and a centre and left tackle shy of probably a 10-6 season, with the promise of better to come next season.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
everything inside the lines is a new conversation if you want to go from there and forget about the timeline confusion?

I wanted Paradis, but at the end of the day, any signing that suggests "this position needs competition" would have made me happy. I think Mac has a long ways to go before becoming a good GM in this league. I would say he's treading water. I think he fixed the pass-rush which is good, but he needs to look at what BUF is doing and observe the fact that everyone is trying to win in the trenches and that's both sides of the ball. His vision of this team lacks direction.

Just the one comment on the goings on at Buffalo, on paper they look like they have done a good job, now it is wait and see what happens on the field before crowning them AFC East champs (I know you didn't say that btw :) ) they still have a long way to go.

Agreed, Josh Allen still needs to be able to throw a football on a consistent basis. I really liked their draft, they are out there signing tons of offensive lineman. They revamped their line in 1 off-season, I just wish Mac paid more attention to it.

I agree with a lot of the things you are saying in this topic BTW, I do not count Mac's first 2 years as a GM anymore.

Macs clock started when he took the job. Not sure why that’s up for debate. Excuses are excuses no matter which way you slice it.

The Jets need to make the playoffs this year or Macs toast, as he should be.

Yes, it goes to show that the OL can be improved in a one hit show, hopefully, that will be next season for us, fingers crossed for a centre of some sorts before the coming season though.

I was going to mention Allen but thought that just opens up another kettle of fish and I have had a hard time in this thread already today lol
I know he isn't conventional but I do think he has something about him and not just with his legs running, btw this is used as a slight on him but Jackson @ravens is no different and nobody dislikes him at all :)
