that video brings back some great memories watching the draft as a kid....rozelle was perfect at dryly trolling the Jets fans in attendance before he finally made his announcement, basically chuckling to himself knowing that they were going to lose their shit at the name he was about to announce, lol.
^^^Great fan and analyst reactions when the Jets draft Kyle Brady after Warren Sapp falls into their lap. Theismann: "this just doesnt seem to make any sense, unless Rich Kotite has some plans that nobody knows about."
Solid list and excellent points, Noam. ESP the bold. It is all about the value and not overpaying for something (or someone) you could have gotten for cheaper.
He was the definition of an average NFL kicker over his career. What a dumb pick. At least we got Jolley out of the deal. That made up for not getting Heath Miller.
Let me follow that by saying DON'T EVER TRADE WITH THE RAIDERS. They have an organizational commitment to hating the Jets.
He showed promise but never any consistency. The fumble damaged him psychologically and he was never the same but I still don’t think he ever would of fulfilled his #2 pick status.
A guy I worked with back then had a cousin who was a sports med Dr. He reviewed his medical records and suggested they pass because his knees were shot and he wouldn't last long. The Jets ignored the Dr.'s recommendation. While he did have a good start to his career his knees failed him just as predicted. I thought for sure they would pass on him based on the medicals. It was the first of many many hair pulling first / second round picks I suffered through. (Before that I never really paid attention to the draft other than the 1983 draft. I wasn't upset that they passed on Marino there were tons of negative reports on him..turns out most were smokescreens..that was the first time I realized all the fake news being spread pre-draft).
In fairness Marino was the better QB BUT if he couldn’t win a ring playing in that warm weather client I doubt he would of brought one to NY. The Florida media always used the Dolphins poor defense as an excuse but one can only bring that argument so far. The defense improved in the 90s. But look at the 1994 SD playoff game in which Marino had the ball on the SD 30 yard line in the waning seconds and rather then attempting to get 5-10 yards closer for an easier FG attempt he threw a couple of bombs looking to be the hero. They missed the 48 yard attempt and lost. It’s things like that.......
Well-said, MrJet80. Count me among those who consider Marino to have been overrated. HOF QB? of course. but he does NOT rank with the best of the best of all-time (Montana, Elway, Young, Brady, et. al.) for several reasons. First of all, he threw way too many INTs and was downright reckless with the ball at times due to his ego and his belief that he could make any throw. Second of all, he did not have the same amount of drive/focus that those other guys had...he was NOT a team first guy, he was a Marino first guy. That is what made the whole "Miami will be a run first team, Marino needs help" BS so amusing. Marino wanted to throw the ball 40-50 times a game, even if that was not the best recipe for winning a Super Bowl. I remember watching a documentary about Elway, and a player (I forget who, I will try to find it) who played with both QBs commented on the biggest difference between the two. He said that Elway would be in the weight room, busting his ass with all the other guys on the team. He said that when he got to Miami, Marino would just kinda be lounging around the weight room, making a brief appearance, joking around with guys, and then leave without doing a damn thing. He said the difference in their leadership styles and work ethic was stunning.
He only went in the 5th due to smashing his ankle in the previous season or he was a projected 1st/2nd rounder, a 5th was a bargain but he still has to deliver or it won't be a bargain.
good stuff, NoFlyZone. Thomas was a workhorse at PSU...he had a lot of mileage and an injury history by the time he took his first snap with the Jets.
