I am at a loss here. Van Pelt entered the league in 1973, which should have subjected him to a number between 50 and 69. He played safety in college, but safeties were also not allowed to wear #10 in the NFL in 1973. If I ever find out anything I'll be sure to post it.
Yeah, and he lost and had to wear 55. What I have learned is that Van Pelt may have done kicking of some sort at Michigan State. He perhaps was a kickoff specialist. Of course, linebackers were allowed to wear #10 in college back then. He really liked #10 (I'll assume it's what he wore in college) and wanted to continue to wear it at the NFL level. It looks like he used his prior kicking work as a loophole to get past the NFL's new uniform numbering rule. The Giants may have initially listed him as a LB-K, so he could wear his beloved number. Update: he did kickoff a few times in his rookie season.
he shouldn't get any special treatment, change your number reggie..have respect for the league that's actually paying you to do what you love
this guy is not michael jordan, and this is not the nba...if bush wants to make a living on playing a GAME...then he should abide by league rules
Why? Because he wore it in college? Suck it up Reggie and get a new number that follows the NFL's rules.
If he cant get #5, then i think he'll take 21 for a few reasons. 1) 6+1+9+5 = 21 (619 = area code, 5 = HS & College #) 2) He works out with LT and they are close AND #5 is already taken on the Saints
I agree, he was GREAT at USC, but since he hasn't played a professional down, nah let him follow the rules. chose a new number. does anyone know what that 619 on his eye means?
I don't think we'll hear about it for a while. I believe he can wear 5 in preseason, so the NFL doesn't need to address this crap now.
