I agree with that, but the Mets scored most of their runs with 2 outs as well and with the 7 and 8 hitters, so you could make the same argument there as well. Pelfrey's going through a rough stage the last couple of weeks. I only hope it's a slump. He had a season like this in '08 where he was great for like 3 months and then ended off fairly uneven, so I'm hoping that isn't the case this year neither.
No, you can't make the same argument, because the Reds won the game. If they had lost it, it would have been a bad loss, but they didn't, so it wasn't. Are you seriously suggesting that this wasn't a bad loss? Because that's all I said.
Technically, they're all bad losses. But losing 7-1 in the 5th? I stand by my original statement. The 2 losses in Wash. were much worse than this one. Pelfrey's not going to pitch a gem every time he goes out there. Especially lately. Typical Mets, they fight back just enough to lose by a run or two. At least they show fight, but not to get a hit in the last 4 innings, sucks, plain and simple.
Call it what you want, but the players agree with me. Pelfrey explicitly said after the game that for the first time in more than a year he let his emotions get the best of him, which directly led to the last 3 runs, and ultimately the loss. This has nothing to do with him not pitching a gem; it has to do with him being unprofessional and immature, and those aren't my words, they're his teammates' (Barajas: ""This is pretty much the first time I've seen that. He's been great all year not letting calls or anything influence the way he pitches on the mound. I think this time he got a little frustrated and he just made a couple mistakes." Manuel: "He kind of lost it there, and all that's a part of maturing. I think that's a learning experience for him. I think Mike will grow from these things and be better for it."). That makes this loss much worse than just the fact that Santana lost a close game because the other pitcher pitched as well as he did.
In case you are not aware of who is the Mets starting pitcher tonight all you have to know is that the Mets have scored 0 runs so far. Early, though. Only once through the lineup.
Johan goes yard for his first big league HR! Gary Cohen predicted it earlier in the at bat, and Keith doubted him.
I feel bad for Johan...this freakin team can't even score a run for him, so he had to go do it himself....
Bay has been much better bringing in runs over the past couple of weeks. Maybe he will actually have a good second half.
I don't freaking believe it - Bay is right there to make the second out in the 9th inning and he simply misses the ball. Manuel goes out to take out Santana and Santana tellls him he's staying in. And now Ike makes a real nice play to save a single and turn it into the second out.
And Santana quickly gets the last out for a brilliant 3-hit shutout. Add in the HR, and I guess we have our player of the game.
Don't see the point in playing Reyes here - he can only bat righthanded, and righties are hitting .180 against Arroyo this year.
Whenever I see or hear the word yard in relation to a ballpark, I will now always think of John Sterling's incredibly gay "Gardy goes yardy" after last week's grand slam by Brett Gardner.
