thats all perfectly agreeable but what is the reasoning behind skipping him? He had his best performance of the season last time out. Are we afraid of the big bad red sox? Let the guy pitch and see if he can build off his last outing instead of bringing him back next time like 10 days removed from his good outing. I dont get it. Why not try to get Vasquez right? Its May. It would be nice to see if he can get straightened out no?

I guess this could be debated, but I feel the Red Sox have a better O than the Mets at this point. And I just think the possibility of Vazquez blowing up against the Red Sox will kill his confidence much more than if he blows up against the national league Mets.

This could also be because Girardi may feel Javy is more comfortable against the NL than our other pitchers also. It may be putting the team in the best position to win these games, not just protecting javy.

I would think blowing up against th eMets would be more confidence-wrecking since the Sox have the better lineup. And my main pointis to start Javy in attempt to better the TEAM not protecting Javy. Protecting Javy is sitting him. Pitch him, let him build some good starts and now youve helped the team.

I see it as he has a bad game against the Sox, our biggest rival forever, will probably be cause more mental issues for this guy. I think if he blows up next start regardless it's going to be a huge setback, but I think if he does it against the Sox at home it could ruin him.

And I think Girardi thinks starting him against the Mets is bettering the team. He played in the NL East last year and knows this lineup better than our other pitchers. So protecting him and bettering the team could be the same thing in regard to this series.

regarding the Vazquez debate going on a few posts earlier, give this a read...

Why the Yankees are skipping Vazquez (link)
Yankees decision makers decided to push Javier Vazquez back until Friday against the Mets because they do view him currently as their fifth starter and want to avoid using him against AL East contenders Boston and Tampa Bay.

But Yankees officials insisted that was a secondary reason, and that there were tactical advantages involving the other four starters and the upcoming schedule for why Vazquez was not allowed to start tomorrow against the Red Sox.

For example, if Vazquez started tomorrow and the other starters stayed in line then CC Sabathia would pitch Wednesday against the Rays and Tuesday in Minnesota. Instead, he now will pitch Tuesday against Boston and that will enable him to start Sunday night against the Mets. And the Yanks see that as wise since the game is at Citi Field, there will be no DH and Sabathia is one of the best hitting pitchers in the majors.

In addition, if Vazquez started tomorrow, then Andy Pettitte would have opened the Mets series on Friday night. That would have meant his next two starts after that would have been against Minnesota and Baltimore. But if Pettitte starts Thursday against the Rays – as he is now scheduled – then his next two starts will be against the Twins and Indians, both heavily lefty-swinging teams.

The Yanks wanted to make sure that both Sabathia and Pettitte started against the Indians, who rely on lefty swingers Shin-Soo Choo, Grady Sizemore, Russell Branyan and Travis Hafner. Cleveland began Sunday with a .215 batting average against lefties and a .576 OPS.

“The first time around we did not think it was wise, at that moment, to have Javy pitch in Fenway,” Yankees GM Brian Cashman said. “But this time around (skipping Vazquez) has much more to do with everyone else and less to do with him.”

Joe Girardi said that it would become more obvious after Sunday’s game against the Twins why Vazquez was being skipped. That led to speculation that Vazquez was going to be used in long relief to protect starter Sergio Mitre, who was to be limited to around 80 pitches.

However, the Yanks decided not to activate Chan Ho Park from the DL to keep Ivan Nova on the roster as the long man for Mitre.

I can't wait for Ellsbury and Cameron to get back. Bad outfield defense is the difference in this game right now.

Well, with 3 doubles that should have been outs, I'd say he was.
