What makes you think we would be more competitive with a first year starting Qb? Chances are we will be humiliated on Thanksgiving day no matter who the Qb is, unless that QB can play D too..
I was listening to the Radio today in Miami. They were referring to an interview with Mark Trestman who was an OC in the NFL for a long time as well as varied other positions dealing with QB's and the offense in general. He basically said that winning in the NFL comes down to QB play. He mentioned the improvement in Jacksonville and TB as 2 examples of teams, 1 mediocre and the other pretty talented doing well because of the QB. They went on to point out the Jets. The difference being there was no turnovers for the Jags and Bucs QB's vs. the 6 in the last 3 games for the Jets. Edit: They also mentioned Romo. How no matter how talented they (Dallas) are their record is perfectly correlated with how well he has been playing. I know it is doom and gloom around here 24/7 and in some instances it is justified. However, this team can just as easily be 3-3 or better. All the games the Jets were winning last year they are losing presently. Chad at least played passable last year. As bad as he was he was not even close to being this bad with the exception of the Jag game. This defense played similarly, they are not playing good, however when stops are needed they make them. Last year, Chad was able to get the Jets to capitalize on a big stop. This year he just has not. How this dovetails to the article................. Look none of us know what Mangini and Chad's conversations are as we are not privy. I am 100% positive he has discussed the problems with Chad. I can not believe a genius NFL coach that watches hours upon hours of tape can not see what we all see. Chad has been QB for 5 years. He is not Favre, Brady or Manning, I understand, however he has been a good soldier for the entire time. I think giving him an extra game or two to sink or swim in the scheme of things is no big deal. I really believe if this team had decent QB play we are looking at a 9-7 season. It may not totally be a bad thing to finish 5-11 or 6-10. However this team/CS/FO is definitely not the disaster that many are making them out to be. It is only a matter of time before KC is a QB. Chad is done IMO and I just think that an extra game or two to prove it is not a bad thing. Also, if Tannenbaum is saying this openly, he and Mangini have to had much more in depth conversations about this very fact. my .02 let me know if you need change.
Revis is without a shadow of doubt worth every bit of that trade up and more. Just think he missed most of TC. Also, this really should be his Senior season of College, so he is younger than a normal rookie. The sky is the limit for him.
As a long time Jets fan, all I/we can have is HOPE. Hope is what keeps bringing us back and hopefully before I die the Jets will be in the super bowl. To me, Hope lies with next years draft. We do not have the horsepower to compete on defense and offense. Hopefully, the draft will bring us some of those players. It is always a crapshoot but you never know. The last thing I want to see at this point is meaningless wins. Think big picture.
Right now Revis is showing that he may live up to the spot that he was picked, but I think that with the sacrifice that was made to move up and get him, he will have to be a lockdown corner for a decade to justify the trade-up.
1) It's his 2nd year with the Jets. He's had plenty of snaps with the 1st team in preseason games and even some time in regular season play already. 2) Deep threat... more options for Schottenheimer. Takes some of the load off the O-line and opens up possibilities Dallas has to watch out for. 3) More of a chance to open up the running attack for Thomas Jones and Leon, which opens up play action, which gets the ball out in areas where guys like Leon or B. Smith can actually do something after the catch. 4) It provides a team spark. It's Thanksgiving, "and now we're gonna show the entire country we're not losers and quitters." A chance to showcase ourselves for what we're made of for next year.
we should debut kc on thanksgiving with a full Aerosmith concert introduction with fireworks and sparkels and all that good stuff, he should come out of the tunnel a la hulk hogan, get on the field and then throw a bullet pass at chads shoulder subsequently ending his career-takes the pressure of mangini to make the change, and it takes away that lingering weird feeling, like when 2 sorority sisters bang the same dude....i know, i am an idiot, but i smoked so sorry
I don't disagree with you, but do you really want a CB to be on pace for 100 tackles? That clearly shows the front seven is not getting the job done.
BT, Usually there is a two fold reason for a CB getting a lot of tackles. 1.) The front 7 sucks 2.) He gets a ton of passes thrown his way. However with Revis, his #'s are a little bit of an aberration from the above in the respect that he is a tough SOB. He plays in the box at times like a safety to support the run defense. He will leave his man to make a tackle in the middle of the pile. I do not know about you but he is a rare bird for a CB. This guy gets in the middle and is on tackles with Vilma, Harris, Barton etc. I have really never seen this out of a CB. Also he helps the other CB and safeties with tackles when their man gets by them. To be sure he was picked on by the Bills but by and large no other team has really picked on him. I might be over rating him at this point but the guy almost plays like a safety, with the added benefit that he is a good to decent cover CB. That is less than 1/3 into his first season. If he adds ball hawking to his repertoire look out. Like I said earlier, I am completely comfortable with the trade up. Players like Revis are no luxury pick. The Jets are going to need players like this to turn the program around. If they can get a D-lineman and a O-lineman or two with a nose for the ball and/or just a plain old tough Football player that make plays like him this team is going to be good sooner rather than later. (By sooner I mean after April). If anything Tannenbaum seems to find at the very least 1-2 stud's a draft so far and I am saying this watching the last 2 drafts players start to develop. (06 more so than 07' obviously). BTW to answer your question, I would really like Vilma, Harris and Barton to lead the team in tackles. I would also like to see another d-lineman other than K. Coleman make some plays at the line of scrimmage as well. But if Revis wants to get in there and tackle well he is just about the surest one on the team but no I do want the starting CB to have an inordinate amount of them, you are 100% correct.
I SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY doubt you will find one jets fan who will call for Chad's return if Clemens has a bad outing. IF (not when) we ever get to the point where they finally sit noodle arm, the enthusiasm will not disappear that fast.
I think he's right: the NFL is a QB-driven league. BTW, some info on Trestman, he goes back a long ways... Marc Trestman began his coaching career in 1981 for the University of Miami while attending law school. In ?83, after passing the Florida Bar exam, he was named the Hurricanes quarterbacks coach. Miami won the National Championship that year defeating the University of Nebraska 31-30 in the Orange Bowl, which went down as one of college football?s greatest games... >>> read more
