Wasn't he fairly unsuccessful with SF's offense? Plus, I don't know if his style fits with cold, windy, snowy december games at the Meadowlands - probably was better for St. Louis' indoor field.
Trust me as someone who got to watch it up close ... even when the Rams were going to Superbowls, the drama and ego was hard to take. Some things are just not worth it. Brenda Warner yapping on talk radio did add fuel to that fire though, I must admit.
Marvin Lewis did too as Dave Waanstedt, Dick lebeau, Dom capers, romeo Crennel, mike Nolan, BUDDY Ryan, Ray Rhodes, Dick Jauron, ...
The team made progress under Mangini so that's not true. Barring playoffs every year or every other year(which we ran herm out for) our next coach will be run out of town w/in a few years.
"In four seasons under Ryan, the Ravens' unit has finished no lower than sixth in total defense. He has been blessed with exceptional performers - 11 Pro Bowl selections since 2005." That's going to be the big question mark, right there. Pee Wee Herman could probably have some coaching success with that caliber of personnel to work with. We'll see...
if he brings in those type of players he'll do it here too. I think he can find his guys here. We were 2nd in the AFC in sacks through 12 games. Ryan can make that through a full season.
No Junc, they regressed in year 2 and crashed in year 3. A case could be made that they got the benefit of a soft schedule in year 1. Oh, and for the love of God, get over Herm willya? Its been a plate of sour grapes with you ever since he left town. For the record, he left to go back with CP. We didn't "run" him out but that's an argument for another day.
I have a concern about this as well, but in fairness Ryan has not coached his players to underperform, like some coaches I can think of. I still would prefer Shanahan, but Ryan would be better than the others being mentioned. I think.
This seems to be the trend, especially if the sentiment on this board is any indicator of overall fan sentiment. I wonder who our next coach will be after Rex is gone. Schotty's replacement will need to go too, of course.
I am borderline Shanahan also. Proven commodity. You can't argue with a 146-91 overall record (or something along those lines). Those are a lot of playoff appearances and a lot of shots at winning The Big One.
I couldn't be happier.. the thing that pissed me off the most about Mangini was his lack of passion and Charisma.. this guy sounds like the polar opposite..I can't wait to see him going nuts on the side line.. screaming at the players in the locker room and getting them pumped up before the games...he will bring energy and heart to this team.. we might have a defense where every hit you sit back in your chair put your hand over your mouth and screamm ooo shit!!.. I want the old new york sack exchange back.. I want a heavy fear inducing defense..I hope he can fire them up. fire this organization up and lead us to the promise land.....whhooo rahhh J.E.T.S JETS JETS JETS!!!
I would have preferred a known entity aka: experienced, successful coaching replacement myself. However, since that's not likely to happen, Ryan appears to be the best of what's being looked at by our GM. My wife would call it "settleling". I'm not so cynical..
You mean those calm, controlled, Powerpoint-like business presentations before the games concerning "consissency" and "the three phases" doesn't quite get you worked up? (LOL)
That's not really what I was getting at. People expected things out of Mangini that he had never really accomplished up to that point.
They regressed b/c they had no OL. That was a talent issue and they got alot better in '08 w/ a QB forced upon him a month before the season that sabotaged our season. The fans ran Herm out of town like, yes he left but he left before he could get fired like he probably would have.
It doesn't appear Shanahan is yet willing to relinquish "complete control," at least, there've been no reports that would indicate that he was willing to sit down and talk about that, so yeah, Ryan is the next best choice. That's been the major stumbling block all along with Shanny, I think, and nothing will develop concerning his consideration for the job if he doesn't make the first move with that major obstacle. Woody made it abundantly clear on that Monday that he feels no one man can do everything 100% effectively... drafts, personnel management (and negotiations), acquisitions, cap analysis AND coach at the same time. Shanahan is a dinosaur in that regard. There are maybe only one or two teams left in the entire NFL that have that situation. Nobody is relinquishing that kind of control anymore... it just doesn't make sense.
Problem was.. IT DIDN"T HAPPEN... Funny Mangini is in Cleveland now talking about how unpredictab;e the 3-4 is and how you disguise fronts and send Blitzes from all over.. WAT??????? Eric we just watched a bunch opf games where marginal QB's sat back and had all day while 3 linemen rushed... No way Rex allows his job to be on the line while QB's sit there and mock him.
Dont agree with this at all Junc. I was very excited about EM coming here but he was never sold as the guy that built great defenses. He came from a BB backround and thats what sold some of us..and anything but Herm Edwards at the time seemed like a positive...you know..somebody that understood the importance of having timeouts left at the end of the game...stuff like that. You cant compare the two backrounds and what they have accomplished. If you want to point out a negative...he has had the horses thats for sure..but the Jets have a lot of the pieces of the puzzle already that just needs a solids system and a couple pieces.
The final straw was making Seattle's QB (WTF is his name again?) look like Joe Montana. And that was behind an O-line that were still wearing name tags in the locker room saying, "Hello... I'm Joe, your new Right Guard!"
