Almost any player that has value only on ST is a fringe player and capable of being cut at any time for someone who can get contribute on offense or defense.

  2. This is straight out of the Parcells book of thought. Not tolerating repeated mistakes from special teamers and fringe players. It sends a message.

And yet J MAc gets a pass with his continually shitt play. I still think his ass shoulda been cut after the Ravens game.

D'Brick had two false starts and was ALMOST cut by Mangini right after the game.

Parcells uses it on two positions only: punter and kicker. The reason is that failure in those two positions just kills a team.

Cutting Rashad Washington sent no message to the team that anybody above the level of fringe special teamer would pick up on. It just looks punitive.

Cutting Adrien Clarke or even D-Rob on the other hand would have sent a message nobody could ignore. The Jets lost yesterday primarily because D-Rob still has not adjusted to playing the nose 24 games into the experiment. The majority of the yards that Portis picked up came where? Right up the gut.

Where ever David Harris wasn't. I think he was the only Jet that could make a tackle yesterday.

umm cutting guys who are not fringe players causes salary cap problems though. correct me if im wrong but the signing bonus comes up immediately or for the next year? i highly doubt that washington had too big of a signing bonus.

so yeah it really doesnt happen to often where big name, well let me rephrase big money signing bonus money guys get cut in the middle of a year to prove a point.

but then again i could see mangini doing it if a guy talked to the press or something.

Cutting a guy like that may send a message, but it doesn't necessarily send a good one. See the Falcons and Grady Jackson as proof of that.

The idea of Mangini doing this to send a message was just fan speculation on this board. So you can't really use that as a knock against Mangini.

The fact is Washington was lucky to make the squad this year. I thought he should have been cut last year. With Elam getting snaps, he bacame the 5th safety on the team. He was hanging on due to his special teams play. So when he started making mistakes and becoming a liability on STs, he became expendable. So can anyone really say they were surprised by this? I am more surprised it didn't happen sooner.

We had too many Washington's on the team anyway. Communication should improove as a result of this move.
