Exactly, Past the 20-25 range there really is no difference between them and 2nd rounders. It's all a crap shoot. so why not trade down and take as many shots as possible. I may be wrong on this but I recall reading the Patriots have drafted the most NFL starters during that period, be it with them or other teams.
Could your argument be any more full of holes? If the 20th pick in the draft was the same as a second round pick then it would stand to reason that a second round pick is really no different from a third rounder and so on. If it is all a crap shoot why not just throw all the names in a bag and draft that way? As wrong as you have been so far I am going to err on the side of caution and say you are also wrong about the number of NFL starters drafted by the pats.
This is what I was looking for when I was reading this thread. When the Jets signed Dowling, I tried reading Patriots message boards/blogs when he got cut to see what their immediate exit thoughts were on him. Seems like the best thing to do is not to expect anything, and if he even makes the team, it's a bonus.
Initially this is the comparison I made to a current Jet. It's really all about that 2nd and fourth corner spot for the Jets. I hope Patterson, Dowling, Millner, and Wilson can lock it down. Was hoping that Aaron Berry would be in th mix too but it looks like he signed with Clevland yesterday. Should be very interesting to see camp battles at the CB, WR, OG, and Saftey spots. Sure we will add more depth as needed after TC cuts
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/ras-i-dowling?id=2495147 They ranked him as a 6.69, which is Pro-Bowl caliber player. I know their rankings are nothing to take seriously, but it gives us a general idea of his potential.. If he can stay healthy, we might have ourselves a steal.
Interesting stuff. Dowling actually was a Week 1 starter his rookie year- but he hurt his hip in Week 2 and missed the rest of the year. The next year he tore a thigh muscle after playing 7 games, and Belichick wrote him off as being too injury prone and not worth a roster spot relative to his upside. It was considered a somewhat surprising move because of his draft status. We added him to our practice squad for 2013, so he's had an entire year to get healthy and study Rex's defense. Dowling is supposedly good in zone defenses and struggles in man coverage; and of course the Jets do man coverage, so he might not be an ideal fit with the Jets either. But had high draft stock for lots of reasons, and maybe he will end up being good with the Jets.
LOL... maybe. At least Hill has gotten on the field. Supposedly one of Dowling's IR injuries was a hip. (Not so sure that's accurate though, given when Talib said this offseason about his own injury that was reported as a hip.) And supposedly that impacted his ability to run and turn with receivers. I wanted to see the guy do well, but it just seemed like he never got it rolling. Lots of potential, maybe Ryan can get the most out of him if he's finally 100% healthy.
Unfortunately he sounds like he's porcelain peanut brittle thus far. That said, Ras-I Dowling, Dakota Dozier, Dexter McDoogle.....some funky names starting to pop up on this roster.
He can't since he didn't name a time frame. He's trying to hedge his bets by being able to henpeck random draft picks for the past 15 years, without giving his argument timeframe limits.
