It's absolutely necessary for the Jets to start anybody other than what they have...it's still about PSLs..it will always be about PSLs. It's not like anybody is expecting them to contend for the SB with Clemens anyway...lol. They have nothing to lose...the days of nuturing a top 10 QB are gone forever.

I am not sure he loses credibility. However losing the locker room is a possibility. The veteran players are circling the wagons around Clemens and they are all saying that Clemens needs to get a legit shot. Bringing in a Sanchez or Freeman and making them one of the highest paid players on the team could have drastic results.

A new coach often brings in a new QB. That's just the way it is. A coaches job ultimately depends on how well the QB plays for him, with a few exceptions. It's no surprise when that fact translates into a need for "my guy" at the position. This is true even for legendary coaches like Bill Parcells.

and it usually makes or breaks their tenure with a team.

A coach can either be a Mike Nolan or a Mike Smith.

I kind of agree with the OP. The logic of what Ryan has been saying is really that the Jets should feel reasonably confident they have enough talent at Qb to get the job done, and in fact they need to play one or both of these guys to see how much they can take it from there. Just for discussion's sake, if Clemens in fact got in there and was successful, and Ratliff looked very good as the backup, why would it make sense to spend a first round pick on a third stringer? Not just for this year but for the foreseeable future? I don't think it does.

And while it is true that Tanny runs the FO, Ryan does in effect speak for the team, and presumably is in on the discussions and decisions, even if Tanny ultimately is responsible. For Ryan to have said what he has and the Jets going and spending the first pick on a Qb would be hard to make sense of at this point.

Of corse Ryans QB judgment is in question. He coaches defense and came from the endless QB struggling Ravens. Maybe he sees some Joe Flacco in our current QBs?

Its likely we didn't bring Ryan in to build a top ranked passing game.
