NFL teams just have no clue when it comes to qbs. A 4th rounder can very possibly be better than a 1st rounder these days. A player should not be treated a certain way because of his draft status. Unfortunately the reality is that they are.
I agree that a 4th rounder can very easily be better than a 1st but disagree that they should be treated the same; that's crazy. There's limited time and snaps in camp; you have to prioritize in some way. It's just makes sense that time and snaps are divvied out proportionate to the amount of the investment, at least initially that would be the case.
I disagree. I don't think one can just categorically dismiss a 4th round pick and say he's a backup. By the same token, I don't think he should be seen as the starter in waiting. I think one keeps an open mind and sees how the player performs in practice and in pre-season action. Chad sat because Vinny was "the guy" in spite of all the stupid picks he threw. Chad was never given a chance to compete for the starting job. I disagree with the bolded phrase. The Jets used two draft picks to get him. They owe it to themselves to see what he can do. Players can play very well, but when they get limited snaps and aren't taken seriously, they don't have a realistic chance of changing the HC's mind. They have to be given some real practice and playing time and a realistic chance to show what they can do. It wouldn't help the Jets one bit to have him sit on the bench for 3-4 years. In that scenario, he's just taking up a roster spot. If that's their plan, they might as well cut bait with him now and draft another QB. We know that Geno isn't the answer. Neither is Fitz, nor McCown, nor Hoyer nor any other JAG vet QB they sign. Petty is the best and only chance they have at the moment of having a QB of the future. They shouldn't rush him before he's ready, but by the same token, they can't wait forever, either. He's already 25-26 I believe. He should be given a LOT of work in the mini-camps, OTAs and TC, more than Geno and given a realistic shot to unseat Geno.
I'm just curious where you draw the line. Do all QBs drafted deserve this shot? Even un-drafted ones? Is it just the ones we trade up for regardless of the round or is the 4th round the floor? Did we fail to give Tajh Boyd, Greg McElroy, Erik Ainge, Kellen Clemens and the like their fair shake?
For sure. What I'm talking about is how first rounders will be given huge leashes to play until it's painfully obvious that they're a bust whereas a later round selection is treated as an afterthought and needs not only skill but a lot of luck to be given a chance.
How in the world can Hackenburg even be considered before the 7th round. The kid was AWFUL in college. He pretty much was PSUs version of Jeff Driskell-top recruit with an NFL future who simply wasn't good at playing Quarterback Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A first round pick is a big investment of course you will exhaust every opportunity to yield something positive out of said investment. Conversely, a 4th round pick is not as great of an invest so the leash is logically shorter. Unless one is related to Petty or has actually seen Petty consistently and completely outplay the guys ahead of him on the depth chart in practice, I don't see why this is even an issue worth discussing.
Bob Davis. I don't think the fans were clamoring to see him in the game although I was not really watching very hard at the time so I might be wrong on that.
Jets need to go get Cook in the 2nd and just move on already. Accurate on 59.4% of deep (20+ air yards) passes last year. Best mark in the nation. People are continuing to sleep on this guy, while he has inconsistencies, he has a lot of NFL ready tools and I think he can be a guy that gets you 20 TDs a year. 3rd best QB in the draft. A little arrogant though, but I kind of like it.
Still pushing Cook I see. I don't think the exposure to a pro-style offense is a much of advantage over other prospects from the Jets perspective since we run a lot of spread concepts. When you eliminate that from the equation, is does bring Cook back down to the jumbled pack of 2nd their QBs.
Absolutely, the Jets coaching staff and the QB coach went out there to visit him during his pro day as well. I think his exposure to the pro style offense helped him in terms of reading defenses, checking in, out of the right / wrong plays and executing them. This improves the football IQ immensely, especially if you learned this concept early in your career. We may run a lot of spread concepts, but as far as I am concerned you still need to be able to read / adjust the defense pre and post snap. That is why Geno Smith is a failure even though he came from the Spread. In terms of throwing ability, only maybe Wentz has shown the consistent ability to place the ball only where the receiver can get it in this draft. Short, intermediate, down the field, tight windows, etc. EXCELLENT against the blitz. I think everyone here gets too in love with potential and overlook some of these 4 year starters like a Kirk Cousins [whom I believe Cook is more talented then]. Cook is a winner, has a very good arm, great football IQ and he's not a statue in the pocket either. Definitely top 2 in terms of ball placement ability. He reminds me a little of Eli Manning. He needs tools around him, he can't carry a franchise alone. Comparing him to Hackenberg and Cardale Jones is an absolute insult.
Have nothing against anything said here except Mariota kinds of prove that GeNOOO's failures had nothing to do with the fact he came from the spread. Also, I will come to the defense of GeNOOO a little bit. Aside from having difficulty with delayed blitzes which many QBs do, IMO his pre and post snap read was/is not that bad considering his experience level.
I think Geno holds onto the ball longer then any QB in the league, I think he's good in a 1 read offense, but you can't have him scanning the field and going through his progressions. I'll never forget that one play against the Panthers when Holmes was screaming for the ball prior to the snap. Geno failed to read the field prior to that snap and ultimately threw a pick 6. Can't say it's bad but I can't say it's good either. Mariota, gifted / smart QB, but not out of the water yet. Hopefully they fix that line for him because he won't last much longer.
Cook will be long gone by our pick in round 2. If we like him we would need to take him at #20. I would bet that he won't make it by the Broncos at number #31.
I agree Cook has a very high ceiling. Most had him as the first overall pick last year at this time for this draft as well. I wouldn't be fine with us taking him at 20 if Mac believes he can start day 1. Some say there are character issues with him and that because he wasn't made captain that he isn't a good leader... I feel that this has been overblown and his talent outweighs that stuff. i heard on the nfl satellite radio that some GMs have him ranked above Goff but below Wentz and Lynch.
