One thing i liked about Petty in the pre-season is that he SCANNED THE FIELD. One thing i haven't seen ANY QB we've had do maybe since Favre. Whenever Sanchez did it he threw a pick so he doesn't count. The big knock on Bryce was playing from under center and breaking his habits from the one-read offense at baylor. He looked like he had NO issues with either, but that was without a real pass rush and playing vs 2nd and 3rd stringers so the verdict is still out. I'm with you.. if my guy Eugene proves he can't hang with the big dogs... maybe we'll see Bryce by week 8-10???
Why? Unless Fitz comes to his senses, Geno or McCown or Hoyer will be starting. None of those are likely to light up the NFL. The Jets need to see what they have in Petty. IMO there's no reason why he shouldn't be ready to play by the midway point in this season. He should know the offense by now, should have adapted to the speed of the NFL, will have had two TCs, and had time to work on taking snaps from under center, his drops and going through his progressions. By all accounts he's smart and a hard worker. I think 1 1/2 years should be sufficient. If he has to sit for 3 years, then he definitely isn't the answer and the Jets need to be looking to take another QB.
just my opinion on him. he seems insanely raw. needs to get down so many things. he has the tools but i dont see 1 thing he doest ready for NFL.
Ugh draft another QB? In the first? I'd rather see what we got in Petty with a full camp working out with the starters if Fitzbeard isn't back.
Not sure what the "ugh" is for. We're not the Browns. Drafting a QB in the first is not a yearly occurrence. Secondly, no competent GM will go into a season with the plan at QB being to "see what we got in [a 4th round draft pick from a year ago]". Guys like Petty get the chance to show what they got when the starter gets hurt or by completely outclassing every other QB in camp with very limited snaps.
footwork, progressions, decision making, skittishness under center, taking the snap under center, drops too deep under center, stares his first read down, holds it like a loaf of bread outside the pocket. i mean im not a scout, and this is all just from watching in training camp and preseason, so take it for what its worth.
If Petty starts at all this year its because either a) he's thoroughly outclassed the other QB's in camp to grab the #2 spot and #1 goes down during the season or b) something has gone terribly wrong for the 1st 10-12 games and they're hopelessly out of the playoffs and want to see what the kid can do. Other than that I don't think he sees the field. I also think its highly unlikely that they trade Geno. The skill position talent that this team has on offense cannot be allowed to be wasted by trading a cheap b/u QB with starting experience in favor of a kid that's never thrown a pass in the league as the b/u. The ONLY exception I see is "if" Mac signs both Hoyer and McCown cheaply and let them battle it out in camp. In this case I can see them dumping or dealing Geno.
QBs Jets have drafted in the first round for reference. 2009 - Mark Sanchez 2000 - Chad Pennington 1983 - Ken O'Brien 1976 - Richard Todd 1965 - Joe Namath 1962 - Sandy Stephens
I know everyone on here is an expert NFL scout who is never wrong but I can't help but laugh when people say they don't want the Jets to take a QB early. You kind of need a top QB in this league if you haven't noticed. Better find one soon or it's back onto the old GM/HC carousel for another try. Rinse & repeat.
I think Petty could wind up starting due to injury. It's a known fact that QBs go down every season with injuries. It doesn't matter if it's Hoyer, McCown or Geno starting, which ever one it is could go down with a serious injury. They could opt to start Geno at that point, but unless they think he's still possibly a viable QB, unless it's early in the season and/or they just don't think Petty could handle it, I don't see the point in starting him if he was backing up Hoyer or McCown. We pretty much know what we're gonna get with Geno. They need to find out what they really have in Petty and if he can be their QB of the future. If he has to sit for 3 years, then he will not be the answer. A year and-a-half to almost two years should be plenty of time for Petty to sit. I think they need to find out if he can be their starter next season.
With regards to the bold, no they don't. That whole "they need to find out what they have" crap is what led to GeNOOO starting 29 games. He's a 4th round draft pick. The fact that he made and is still on the roster means he's already exceeding expectations. The Jets do not owe him anything more. It's up to him and probably a little bit of luck for him to move beyond being just a JAG on the roster going forward. He has to force their hand through his play in the limited snaps he gets in camp and the preseason to get the chance to compete for the starting spot.
Honestly even I'd we trade Mo and move up in the draft I hope we don't take a QB. This year's QB class looks terrible. Honestly, Petty would go a lot higher in 2016.
