1. Of course there are QB's that look good as a sophomore/junior and then slump the next year. You can still gauge the talent level of each draft class. This isn't 2007, it's 2017 now. There's a lot more information available to evaluate players and pick out the players who have a higher probability of success. All games are in HD and have multiple angles. Nutrition has improved. Training techniques and tape study methods have improved. Communication between college coaches and NFL coaches is much more prevalent. Social media and everyone having a smart phone allows scouts to see how players behave in their daily activities and who players are friends with. There's still thousands of other variables that go into making a QB successful, but there's a lot more info available to talent evaluators. Next year's class is thought to be better than this year since it has Darnold, Rosen, Allen, Rudolph, Falk, Browning, Jackson, etc. Some will put up poor stats but others will succeed and be high draft picks. I myself like Darnold and Rudolph but what do I know. 2. Again, if you draft Trubisky and he doesn't play or only plays at the end of the year, what are you gonna do with our high draft pick next year when we have a shot at a better QB? 3. GM is staying for another year no matter how bad next year is (and it will be bad). Bowles has a chance of being fired but TBH I'd rather keep the coaching staff around and have stability. 4. Trubisky on the bench won't sell tickets.
This article: http://www.ganggreennation.com/2017/4/24/15258878/scouting-the-2017-draft-my-guys-on-defense supports my belief that the Jets don't have to spend their early picks on "D" at the expense of the thinner "O" selections, but can still substantially improve the defense. For example they could grab Hendrickson from Florida Atlantic, Round 3/4; Chuck Clark from Virginia Tech, Round 4/5; Chidobe Awuzie from Colorado; Round 3/4.
I haven't seen anyone ranking Awuzie that low. IMO he will probably go in the 2nd round. Clark looks undersized at safety. I don't Hendrickson, but his nfl.com draft profile projects him as a backup 4-3 DE, so he doesn't sound like he would be a good fit. I used to post at ganggreennation and stopped because the writers and posters there were the most ignorant and unknowledgeable I've ever run across on a Jets fan site, so I'd take anything you read there with a grain of salt.
I didn't know that, thanks. Still, my overall belief is that offense needs to be upgraded, even if they don't take a QB, the ones they have will need significant help to even become mediocre. It's tough though because they also need to upgrade the pass rush and secondary, especially at FS. Can't they qualify for expansion status?
