NC, I think you're safe. Can't see shedding all these vets and then bringing in Romo or Cutler. That would border on insanity.

I see no reason for them to draft another "project". The only two QBs I see as potential first season starters are Mahomes and Watson, all the rest are either projects that will need several years on the sidelines, or busts waiting to happen. If the Jets want a legitimate FQB prospect they'll need to grab Mahomes or Watson at 6, or forget QB until next year - they need immediate help, not help 3 years from now.

All three options represent accepting a mediocre QB who will be a roadblock to the development of any potential FQB they draft for the next couple of years. I vote "NO" to all 3.

This is EXACTLY what they should do. But I'll be shocked - pleasantly - if it happens.

I understand your concerns and hesitation with taking a QB in the 2nd round, but let's be real. You're talking about a two-team difference between pick #36 and pick #38. If Carr had gone at pick #38, you'd be talking about pick #38, not pick #36. You can also go broke in a hurry missing on players in the 2nd round period. As important as the QB position is, imo if Mac has any strong doubts about Petty and Hack becoming their QB of the future, then he either needs to roll the dice and take Watson or Mahomes at #6, trade down some in the first round and hope they get one of them, or take one of them if they're there at the Jets pick in the 2nd round.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. I would think it's pretty safe Romo won't be here as he'll have a choice to make and it's a pretty safe bet he would not be considering the Jets.

Cutler on the other hand I see as extremely likely. In fact he would be my odds on favorite to start opening day this year. Wouldn't be happy about it but it seems like a very Jet like move to make.

I also don't think the discarding of. Yes means anything, as of right now each of them are addition by subtraction.

I basically agree with you, but don't see Glennon as a roadblock. I don't think he's that good, and I think that any young QB the Jets have or get that has any real shot at being a FQB can beat Glennon out.

I respectfully disagree. Both of these guys are good prospects but neither are first year starters. Nor do I think that is the intent of the Jets. I think Mac and Bowles want to give any rookie QB taken a redshirt year, and I'm OK with that.

A case could be made that the Jets are trying to follow the BB approach that worked with Brady, except that the Pats had a legitimate FQB-type QB already in place and so having Brady sit behind him was acceptable. But Brady was an unknown too: lots of pluses, but also lots of question marks, just like Hack. Brady took a couple of years to grasp things, but when he did, BOOM! So I could see the argument that Hack is a "Brady-in-waiting". Personally, I don't believe it, but it IS possible.

What top coaching are you talking about ?? This is the blind leading the blind imo

If Hack improves he is getting private lessons on his own..ftr didn't someone on Jets leak out he couldn't throw for sh*T?

This kid may need a better set of instructors cause Bubba has not hired any miracle workers

I hear you, but did you see Prescott as a first year starter? Did anyone, even the Cowboys? A true FQB prospect should be able to start in his first year, and you'll find out quick enough if he is, or isn't.

I agree with Westie. What sense does it make to cut the vets and then bring in someone like Cutler? IMO, none. IMO you only bring in Cutler if you're going "all in" to make the playoffs. He's not a guy to mentor young QBs or to lead a young team. In fact, imo he's not a leader at all. He's not a long term answer at QB. He's a douchebag and headache, and the Jets have enough of those already.

If they bring in Cutler, it will be because Woody thinks it will help sell seat licenses, because Bowles has Woody's ear and is trying to save his job, or because Mac is a total idiot, or some combination thereof.

Oh I'm not saying it will make sense, the Jets rarely do. I'm just saying I don't see it as a given that the Jets are in full rebuild mode because they released a few unproductive vets. Bowles and Mac have there jobs on the line, if the team tanks next year, while it would absolutely be best for us fans there will be two new guys making the selection next year.

So while I'm fully against the idea of Cutler as well as any other vet QB, I don't think cutting useless overpaid underperforming vets rules them out.

Yeah but remember the Cowboys were set with Romo as their starter all the way up until late August when Romo broke his back. Even then they were looking at either Sanchez or bringing in a free agent but decided to give Prescott the ball. It was a gamble that paid off big for them. But noone made Prescott the starter in training camp. It was circumstance. The Cowboys I'm sure would rather have given him a redshirt year as well.

Just throwing it out there but it looks like Manziel has really straightened himself out. Apparently there is some buzz at the combine, he was a first round pick if you remember.
Cheap with loads of potential. For all of us who like the idea of Hack and Petty battling it out throwing Manziel in there couldn't be the worst thing ever.
I have a feeling I'm going to take a beating for this but there it is.

Any QB taken after the early 2nd round is almost surely a "project". The only way the Jets should take another project is if they don't think Hack is going to work out, and they've signed vet FA who they think can carry them for a year or two at least. Needless to say, I disagree with this approach. But if they couldn't get Mahomes or Watson, it would be a way to hedge their bets. There is no guarantee that they'll "win" a top 2 or 3 draft pick next year - in fact, I think they'll actually have a lower pick than this year - so if they don't get their FQB this year, they're going to have to have a plan to get them through a couple of years, and a vet QB + Petty + a "Project" this year might be that plan. I hope not, but it wouldn't surprise me. It's a recipe for continued mediocrity at best, but they've been doing it for almost 50 years.

I wouldnt be surprised if the dumping of Revis was a "told ya so" moment for Mac. Maybe now Woody will let these guys build the team as they see fit. Also, I think the Yankees and Mets team rebuilds and the patience shown by both fanbases maybe shed light for ole Woody. NY fans want it done the right way.

    Fair enough.

I don't think it's a given that Mac will be gone if the team tanks. For that matter, it's not even a given with Bowles. Woody may have finally realized that the team needs a rebuild and so is giving Bowles or both another two years. While I hope that Woody has realized that the team needs a rebuild, I hope he won't automatically give Bowles two more years.

I think Woody needs to look at how the team comes out to play each week. Are they prepared? Are they still playing sloppily, inconsistently, and making mental errors? Is Bowles holding players accountable? Is he managing the game better and making adjustments? Is the D playing a lot better?

I think he needs to look at those things regardless of whether the team wins 8 games or 0 games. If the team wins 8 games, but the team is still unprepared to play half the time, still making mental errors, playing sloppily, the D is still bad, and Bowles is still unable to make adjustments or manage the game better, then Bowles needs to go, because imo if that happens then Morton will have been a revelation as OC and either Petty or Hack (or their other QB) will have proven to be very good and won those 8 games for them.

Conversely, if the team wins 0 games, but they show up prepared to play each week, and they play hard, smart, tough, don't quit, and a lot of the young players seem to be developing, then perhaps Bowles needs to stay.

Especially since Bowles and Mac aren't joined at the hip, and Bowles reports to Woody, not Mac, I think each should be viewed separately based on his job description and the work he has done. I think Bowles is the one more likely to be fired following the 2017 season. Mac has done some good things. If he has a solid draft and FA period this year, he should stay. If he has a mediocre draft and FA period, then he probably needs to go.

Absolutely! But my point is that if a guy is FQB-quality, you can start him in his first year. It's not ideal, but desperate teams do desperate things, and desperation is often the key that unlocks the door to progress.

If the Jets grab Mahomes or Watson, my ideal plan would be for them compete for the starting job, and if they win it, go with them. After all, they've proven they're better than what you have. If not, they become a viable backup. That is, you carry a "practice dummy" backup if your starter goes down early, but you put the rookie in whenever you can. You get through this year giving him real game experience, but you limit his exposure to injury as much as possible. Between this year's FAs and draft, and next years you build up a good supporting cast around him, and then in Year 2, you take the training wheels off and let him sink or swim.

This is not the QB draft year to do it. There's no QB worth their salt at #6 that would be without issues and a non-developing project. Jets have to be hallucinating as much as the fan base here to think they would pick one in their position.
