Agreed Don tired of these 3 yard passes, air It out, it takes the safeties out of the box and opens up Chris Ivory's running lanes
Yes, I do and he is the backup..and if Fitz goes down he would still be the backup no matter what anyway and I would much rather see somebody who is going to stay with the team get the reps needed during the week.
Obviously the brain trust doesn't see it your way or Flynn wouldn't be here. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I'm not sure that's how they see it at all, I think they just don't like Heaps all that much and they need a third body until Smith comes back.
Ivory looks so much better catching the football. Leonard Williams is a BEAST. I am however worried about the play-calling duties on defense, I think Bowles will need to take over those.
You may be right. I think if that were the case they would have waited to see if someone shakes loose during cut down day and not jumped out to give a contract to a player still nursing an injury an unable to practice. To me that meant they aren't comfortable with Petty right now.
I don't know about anyone else but I am feeling a bit better with our CS and players after this performance. We are moving on from the "drama" with Smith and IK. I was down in the dumps, but now there seems to be hope with Fitz, Petty, Marshall, Powell, Ivory and the Big Cat L Williams. We now have three decent QBs in Fitz, Flynn, and Petty! Don't want to jinx it but this is not looking bad at all with Gaileys offense in there. Bowles must be happy with a win his first game at METLIFE and prob breathing a sigh of relief that something good happened for a change.
I thank the OP for his in depth observations and game summary. It's a great way for us to re cap our favorite moments, disappointments and thrills. I pretty much agree with most of what has been said here. I will add my two cents: 1- The team as currently constituted can not afford nor could it ever overcome the enormous amount of mistakes and penalties we saw last night. For this team to be reasonably successful the game has to be almost error free and the defense can not give the big yard plays we saw right off the back. Also, between Decker, Davis and the like we manage to erase some big gainers. That needs to be corrected. 2- We need to control field position and a punter that gives us that edge. Currently that might be our Achilles heal 3- I think our QB situation will be ok but we will not be an explosive offense. Geno can still be the answer. Our running will be top knotch and with our WRs we will be able to move the chains. TE and RG might still be an area of massive need. 4- Our top 4 draft players this year are spot on and will be great contributors. It's being a long time since I have seen such bright talent in the making. The Lion is the real deal, Smith will stretch the field and open up Marshall even more, Maulding has what it takes and Petty has impressed me greatly. Please oh please let's not rush Petty into action this year. I think he will be our long term much needed superstar, but he needs to develop plenty. 5- The first team D is a mystery to me, certainly will have a monster front line, but the LBs worry me, Coples,Pace and Harris can not possibly keep up with the top Speedy RBs, TEs and WRs. Cro seems like he is out of position a lot. 6- As a side note, some of the officiating was simply pathetic and killed our momentum. Yet all and all I'm pumped for the season. Chan Gailey, Todd and the like will give us plenty to cheer about. Hopefully we will not figure another way to screw ourselves up like what happened with Geno and IK.
The Good: Our Rookie class showed some promise with Williams and Mauldin getting to the QB a few times. The Bad: Idziks draft picks are an absolute disaster. We aren't going to get ANYTHING our last two draft classes and that will KILL us this year. The offense IMO will not lose games for you, but they won't win any either. If the defense is top 5 then this team could win 10 games, but if the defense is a bust then we very well could be one of the worst teams in the league again. On Paper this defense looked extraordinary, but look whats happened? Dominant Dline? Wilkerson is hurt with a chronic injury and basically is missing an entire training camp meaning that hes probably not going to be 2013 Wilkerson this season at least. Richardson can't be counted on. Who knows if he will ever suit up in a game for the Jets again the way hes going? Depth in Secondary? We discovered Revis is coming off a microfracture surgery. Who knows how long he will hold up? Cromartie has been the worst Dback in camp Idiziks picks are terrible. Milliner hurt again and McDougle isn't an NFL player. Players taking a step a forward with Bowles? Coples looks as bad as I ever saw him and Pryor looks like another bust. So right off the bat what if I told you in June that Wilkerson, Richardson, Cromartie, Pryor, Coples, and Milliner could be non factors this year?
Good writeup btw. Regarding special teams, can we for once get a Punter who gets hang time and distance on his punts. There's always punters looking for work on the open market. I hope the CS at least tries out a few others. The punter on ATL had a 60+ yd punt last night in the air. Not sold on Quigley a little bit. Needs to give our punt coverage team a chance to get down there and help our field position game.
For now I am chalking up the first team D to learning a new defense. Also, adding Mo Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson to any defense will make a big improvement.
Did he really? I honestly didn't remember . That would seem to be a strange cut if he showed some consistency. How did that punter look the rest of the game against Detroit? I can't remember the last time the Jets had a top punter. Tom Tupa maybe.
Just looked it up, was only a 56 yarder but he averaged 51 yards a punt on 4 punts that game. Lol Quigley actually had a 60 yarder but only averaged 46 yards on 3 punts. I might have been drinking. _
My couple of points: Defense: Had some things to build upon. 31 yards on 21 carries (1.5 yards per) is pretty dominant, even if the Falcons missed their starters. When Wilks and Rich come back its going to be very tough to run on the Jets. Nice to see contribution from Cat Williams. He will be a more than adequate replacement for Sheldon until he comes back. Lattimore, Miles and Mays are going to make this team. We should look to deal Coples for a TE or RG. He has no business out in coverage and that rookie from Army absolutely schooled him. But he does have situational pass rush capability so he does have value. Still not worried about Cro. As long as he is healthy he will be fine. Offense: LOVE that Ivory shows pass catching ability. This changes the whole game planning of our offense. Second week of decent pushoff by our OL. Our RB's were getting 5-6 yards per carry up the gut. Good to see. Fitz is going to be fine. He was playing it very conservative last night, and made the low risk throws. He can throw downfield and he will show that as the pre-season progresses and he meshes with our WR's. Petty progressed nicely. I wanted the Jets to select him, was ecstatic when they did, but was a bit concerned that he had a lot of work to do with last weeks performance. I don't want to see him on the field this year but he will be our starting QB within a year or two. The flags for holding on Revis and Decker were good calls and impacted the game and need to be addressed by our coaching staff. But the flag on Bohannon for unnecessary roughness was BS, and the two flags on Walls by the woman ref were horrible calls. The refs were generally horrible last night and I hope the need for equality impact the game in this way.
it was a great gross avg by Schumm last week. but none of Quigley's punts were returnable, so his net was 46yds, while all of Shumm's were returnable, netting him only 36yds on avg. 36 sucks, even if stuck punting to a long field.
Nice job OP. Backs Ivory & Powell looked good. Really like the fire from those two. Decker had an off night: 1. bad penalty negating Powell's long gainer; 2. alligator arms drop of a short dump pass over the middle (saw the LB). QBs were decent. Petty missed Posey on a post for a TD and dodged a bullet trying to hit Enunwa in the endzone as Falcon DB Dezman Southward let it go right through his hands - could very well have been a 102 yard pick 6. Did have nice back-to-back completions to Wes Sexton and TE (Minari?). Chan Gailey's hitch pass play to the sideline off a "twins left" formation (with one WR to set a pick on the up DB) scares me: the formation itself pretty much gives it away - some aggresssive DBs gonna read it and jump it for a pick 6 (it did work once to Shaq Evans). Leonard Williams: BPA. Thank you Maccags. Kerley looked good (as WR; again blah returning punts) hope he's ok for week #1. Same for RB Daryl Richardson - that hit he took from Falcon rookie Roberson Therezie was brutal. - Quinton Coples is not a pure LB - wish they'd address this Rex misstep . If I'm an OC, I'd attack the Jets defense out on the perimeter, i.e. "in space." Their LBs are sub par in coverage. - Some bullets dodged in the secondary on deep passes that misfired to receivers who had the step (or 2) on the Jet pass defenders. Wells completetly fooled on a stop-and-go that would've went for 6 (line judge Sarah Thomas flagged him for back-to-back holding penalties-lol ouch). Lattimore showing nice hands picking off a pass and returning it 36 yards. - penalties - Special teams: not great. Jets could use a punt return threat. As for the punting, Matt Bosher (Atlanta punter): NFL leg. Ryan Quigley: nice guy. Jets -10 yards on net punting.
