It is very hard to build a team but the key is to have patience. IF we miss the playoffs for two years and give the kids a chance to see what they can do at Qb the Fan base will be calling for Rex's head on a platter. I agree defense wins Championships but they are built through the draft and Smart aquisitions not the quick fix way we did last year. We also have to start getting rid of guys while they have value. Coles and Ellis are two examples. The steelers got rid of Faneca a year to early as opposed to a year to late. We held on in the Arizona game when we played them this year and their defense got better.
There is no such thing sorry to say it is up to our owner/GM to build a more dominant team then any other team in the division. You can say those things to ur friends but they are just excuses why we are losers. There were many, many years when NE was NOT a dominant team. Bflo has won what lately? Miami missed the POs the 6 years or so before last season & whre were we when all this was going on? NOWHERE. Plain & simple the other teams in out division have better ownership, better management & better players which is why we come out second or 3rd or 4th best year after year. Its time U faced that fact instead of attempting to BS away why we are constant losers. As for LW if he was a such a game breaking player he should be the STARTER so that he could break games open. yes he is a above average player but surely not in 81 or 11 class Oh yes about our new HC he may want to build a powerhouse D but to do that he needs players & lets just be kind that at this moment he lacks at least 6 or 7of those players to become a feared D in the NFL no matter if U wish to believe that is or not. Here are mt D upgrades that are needed Thomas Barton Ellis Coleman Another CB next to Revis Another safety next to Rhodes That my fellow NYJ fan is 6 out of 11 starters. Think you are going to get them for next year?
For starters, "81" and "11" are WRs, Leon is a RB/KR, and in my opinion he should have been starting since his rookie year. Even in his limited time look at all the games he's changed and the difference he makes. Hard to do it much better than that, just give him the damn ball. Regarding the rest, you're taking my statement out of context now. I just said that when we've had some good teams there have been better teams in our way, preventing a run like Arizona just had or the Giants last year. In 1998 we had a great team but Denver had a slightly greater team, that has been our luck. By contrast, it seems whenever the Giants put a decent team together, everything falls into line for them in the playoffs and they end up in the Super Bowl. That never seems to happen for us. Maybe next year, who knows?
He might. Elam has shown the ability to make big plays, Gholston was a great pass rusher at Ohio State, maybe Ryan gets him in gear, that's what he's here for. If even you admit we have 5 of 11 starters in place, perhaps we're off to a good start. You don't know until you know.
Nope U can forget about next year cause we have way, way, way to many players to upgrade U got to joking with Elam are U not? Way, way below average. VG is just a prayer, just a prayer U do remember that song. Talk to KW about prayers In my opinion some day U should honestly really truly evulate our players 7 then maybe U & I will be begin to write on the same page
Well Faneca, Jenkins, Coles, Ellis and Thomas Jones will have to be replaced since we decided to go for broke instead of trying to rebuild this year. I just find it funny how the Steelers let Faneca go and saved cap space while we refused to get rid of Coles and Ellis while we had a chance to get something for them. Also funny how we traded our picks and could have gotten Lamar Woodley in the draft and Let Farrior go and they won rings with the Steelers and we need two Lb's right now. Is is amazing how they have been the standard of the Nfl and we are the bottom dwellers as usual. Since we got Revis I will not dwell on Woodley though.
Did you watch any games this year, champ? Off the top of my head, he basically won both Buffalo games for us. Something like three or four games in a row he made game changing plays. Put him in Ryan's attacking defense and he can be even better. I didn't know you were a Madonna fan, champ. hmy:
Are you going to spend another off-season pitching your five-year rebuilding plan? Have you not realized that the league isn't condusive to that anymore? You can't even keep guys that long, you have to try and put your best team out there every year.
You been paying attention to the world Champion Steelers over the last 40 years? They have six rings for a reason. They have continuity and they are willing to make the right smart football decisions and not knee jerk reactions out of emotion that destroy Franchises like Brett Farve. They build from the bottom up and take steps back to take step forward. Remember we started this conversation in 2006. Well we have watched the 2006,2007,2008 and I will guarantee 2009 seasons go up in smoke. There are four years right there where we could have attempted to find a qb and rebuild a winning franchise instead of making emotional decisions to please the Fan base. The Steelers and Pats manage to replace and keep guys by drafting well and keeping the core. Letting the Fanecas, Branches go when they should and not make emotional ones and keep the Coles and Chads when they should let them go.
Elam has to fix the space between his ears and become a smarter player. He can blow as many games as he wins by making dumb plays and missing coverages. He is serviceable.
When has Pittsburgh ever taken a step back? They just reload with who they have or can get and come back at you every year. You're right about continuity, and that's why I was against firing Mangini and against bringing Favre in here. Where I disagree with you is the notion that we can settle for being a bad team for three years and magically we're going to then be good, it doesn't work that way. Not anymore. That's how it was done in the Walt Michaels era, not anymore. We had a plan going with Mangini and brought in a lot of good young players, then added some veterans. If we just stuck with that we'd have been fine, close to what you're saying. After 2005 I was all for rebuilding and that's pretty much what we were doing, except we had success early instead of settling for being a bad team. Bringing Favre in here cost us a good QB, a division title and a head coach, so we've strayed from the plan that was in place. I know you're going to come back with a "we had to get rid of Chad" post, but that's not the point. He was a competent enough QB to keep us on the right track until either Clemens stepped up or we found somebody else, but we were still building the rest of the team. It's not a bad team right now, but the whole Favre thing has put us in a different situation than we wanted to be three years later.
You know, that was pretty well said. I never understood the need to get Favre in the first place. That decision was certainly over my head. Mangini has made some nice picks in the draft since coming here. I know of at least 3 starters and two going to a Pro Bowl. That is not bad. The Gholston pick hasn't worked out, but that's about it. Granted first rd. picks should not be bust, but hey it happens.
I didn't know you were a Madonna fan, champ. hmy:[/QUOTE] Madonna's face looks like an old baseball glove.... just saying.
The Steelers went through how many years without winning a Sb with Cowher. He just handed a Sb ready team over to the next coach. In 2006 the reality of the situation was the same as it was for the Dolphins this year and that was the stars aligned perfectly to let a bad to mediocre team get to the playoffs. Reality kicked in for the Phins with Chad this year against he ravens as it did in 06 as well. When we drafted in 07 we did it as if we were one player away from a Sb and not a bad team that got lucky and made the playoffs. We will never agree with how to handle the Qb situation but the other pieces on this team are not SB ready either and most have to be replaced on both sides of the ball. Drafting well and building does not mean I like losing or can stand it but that is how good teams are built but it is the ugly truth of trying to build a team. How Guys like Parcells come in gut and fix messes from the bottom up and it works. Or you can have continuity in ownership who run football teams and not businesses like the Steelers and Giants and do it the old fashioned way. We got a bunch of players last year who are still not good enough to win for us. Faneca and Jenkins are good but they are a heartbeat away from being done. We over rate our talent year in and year out selling a fantasy that we are good enough to beat the big boys. We beat the Cards but they still have better talent than us. As soon as we accept we need to get much better on both sides of the ball the sooner the problems will start to get fixed. Just ask yourself how many more years do you want to waste trying to patch a team together just good enough to lose in the first rd each year. The Jets have practiced your Theory of winning since 2005. Where has it gotten us?
