The way I see it is this : - Geno needs to be taken out now, he's regressing and now getting 'damaged.' If we are to try and develop him needs protecting now. - We still don't know what we have in Simms, it cannot hurt to give him a few starts, one way or the other we find out.
Geno Smith is becoming a laughing stock. If they are worried about the kids psyche or ego or mental make up well all he has to do is turn on the radio or look at the local papers. Leaving Geno in is like letting a boxer go on after having his head bashed in for 8 rounds and he is unable to protect himself or punch. The excuse of well Simms can't play because we don't know what he can do is just as bad as Geno's play. You didn't know what Smith can do and you forced the starting job on him...good job! Let Simms play...maybe he gives this team a spark they are begging for.
couldnt agree with this more. also, geno is still a rookie, and for the most part, seems to have a decent head on his shoulders. i dont see sitting him ruining him. if simms can play great, then awesome. we have a young QB to build a team with. if hes decent the competition is open in camp and you bring in a draft pick to compete. if he sucks you do the same thing as if hes so so, but with a more wide open competition
LOL @ all the sillyness being posted here. You guys do realize that his best receiver yesterday was Greg Salas. WHO THE HECK? I mean, you act like hes throwing to elite talent, or even, average talent. Shit, no one on that offense is even some what decent. We have zero play makers. That is just the reality of the team. How does it make any sense to take someone out and put someone even worse in? I guess the Giants should also bench Eli now, I mean, hes got some of the best talent in football and hes been awful.
Based on the past several weeks, and the fact that Geno does not currently give the team a chance to win, I would see Simms as the best option right now. However, why wouldn't Idzik cut Garrard and bring in a more viable back-up. With our current situation, we can't afford the luxury of a "mentor" who cannot actually play QB. Not only that, the mentoring has not been working. Cut his ass and get somebody who could actually fill in. Since we are in a playoff race, it would be better to have a QB who has actually started before rather than Simms.
Great analogy here. Geno certainly looks punch drunk out there with every pressure situation he's in these days. He's been hit, and hit hard a lot. He keeps getting back up, but those hits start to take a toll. Didn't David Carr get his ass handed to him early and often in his career? He started out with promise and ended up a career backup why? Getting pounded week in and week out had something to do with it I would bet. Playing Geno the rest of the way would provide us exactly what infomation? That Geno can take a pounding would be my first observation. That Geno is developing a case of happy feet ala Rich Todd would be another. The whole "playing in weather" thing really hasn't been tested yet although you have to wonder why the kid didn't put on a pair of gloves yesterday like every other cold weather Qb in the league. I dunno. I don't think there is much upside in playing Geno these last 5 games and getting him pounded relentlessly. If you value him as a project and a investment, then you would protect him as much as possible. Playing extra TE's and just going ground and pound would accomplish that but, Geno would learn nothing and the same result could be accomplished with Simms instead. Either way, look to the first round of the '14 draft for a view into just what the Jets HQ thinks of Geno. They won't say anything damaging in the papers of course, but their draft direction will speak volumes.
I think the CS clearly has decided they can't win with Smith passing the ball. That was completely clear from the playcalling. And why did they not pull him and play Simms? Simms must be REALLY putrid. Season's over...
They didn't pull Simms because they don't want a Qb controversy. That should be evident. Simms has always looked better than Smith when given the chance to play. So to avoid a controversy, don't play Simms. Even if they did play Simms, wanna bet on the pass/run ratio? The downside is that trotting Smith out there to get his ass kicked week in and week out will damage him to the point that he will become skittish. He's been hit a lot and being human, he's gotta be feeling the pain every time. He may get right back up, but notice he's not exactly bouncing back up anymore. He'll become Joey Harrington or David Carr before you know it and then it's back to the draft board for another Qb.
Not so sure about that. Yes, he has look good in garbage time, when other teams have already won and are playing soft defense.
The CS and FO look like fools for the way they are running this situation. How bad can Simms be if he can't even be given the chance to show he can do better? I said this last week - look around the league at all the teams that are not playing the Qb they started the year with. And it is far from the case that all of those starters can't play now due to injury, although that is true for some. Why are the Jets different? Why is it acceptable to have a woeful Qb? Perhaps Rex is afraid to pull Idzy's pick.
Geno has been throwing regularly to above average talent, they just happen to play for the other team. It's time to give Simms a shot.
I think you were right up through the Ravens game.. Geno was Idzik's pick so he had to wait until the field caught up to them and give Geno enough games before pulling the plug. That time has come. I think its pretty clear Geno isn't the answer. While Simms may not be either, its time to play Simms to see which of them is capable of being the back up next year.
Give Simms a start and see how it goes. It can't get any worse than the past two weeks. Geno needs a week, or two or the rest of the season, to take a step back and re-assess the flaws in his game, and build up some confidence. At a minimum, he needs to stop staring down his receivers, and identify when a blitz is coming! He is beyond rattled right now and it's carried over to the entire offense. Mental mistakes, missed assignments, unimaginative play calling, an over-reliance upon the wildcat, and dropped passes are all symptomatic of an offense that is pressing. We need a spark/change to get us out of this funk. If we still suck, well, it's no worse than where we are now and we can look forward to FA and the draft. And finally, there is absolutely a lack of talent at our skill positions, and those who classify it as average or above average are dreaming. Our RBs are solid but unspectacular. Holmes looks gimpy, slow and disinterested. Hill is clueless. Salas and Nelson are JAGs. Winslow and Cribbs have very little left in the tank. Cumberland can still be a solid TE, and Kerley will always be nothing more than a quick slot/possession guy. There are no game changers and no special talent. That's not an excuse for Geno's crappy play - it's more of an indictment of where we are and what we need to fix moving forward.
Rex isn't avoiding controversy by sticking with Geno. At this point, he's inviting criticism from the media and fans by staying the course in the face of hugely disappointing results. Obviously, a reasonable case can be made for pulling Geno. Why wouldn't Rex make a move? I think he's hesitant to do it because he realizes just how shitty his offense is and doesn't see much to be gained by putting another raw rookie in to be chewed up by opposing defenses. Seriously, with the poor O-line play, and some of the worst offensive skill players in the NFL, this is a no-win situation for any rookie QB. Rex may feel the best thing to do, for the long term good of the team, is stick with the higher ceiling, "project" guy and let him continue to learn on the job.
I don't think anyone would argue that he has virtually no viable targets, but his throws are often rushed, in front/behind, high or low. I give Geno props, he comes across as being unflappable, but theres no way in the world all those hits haven't taken their toll. I feel sick for the kid, (and us) with whats happening right now, no one is benefiting from this in the entire Jets organisation.
Look at Geno's numbers, worst completion %, worst rating, most interceptions, top 5 in sacks, most fumbles by a QB. In the past 3 games he literally has more of a chance to turn the ball over than he does completing a pass over 10 yards. How can anyone possibly want this guy to start another game? He is awful, I mean terrible in every way. I hate to come down on the guy since I liked the pick, but man I was fucking wrong in every way, this guy stinks and has no business even being a 3rd string QB in the NFL.
If Geno still sucks then you put in Simms. You give the starter a chance to redeem himself, especially a rookie. I wouldn't be surprised if we see Simms in the 2nd half of the Miami game if Smith struggles.
Right now Geno is the most accomplished QB on the team, by putting in Simms at least we can... - See what Simms has to offer. - Let Geno sit, regroup and learn from watching others. What if Geno plays out the season? - He risks serious injury. - His mental state will be 'Sanchezed'. - He may suddenly 'get it..' and progress. 2 out of those 3 are very likely. BTW, do we have enough clip boards to go around?
If Idzik doesn't put in Simms, then the whole competition mantra is complete bullshit. Idzik should be held accountable.
