Looks like either Leonard or Woodhead. Count me in the camp that does not want to see any of the starting 22 return punts.
I was hoping Wilson would win this job before, but not so much if Revis isn't in the fold. I guess Leonhard is fine, I was hoping for someone with more explosiveness though.
I thought J-Co did a fine job as our punt returner last season, but the trio of Edwards, Holmes and Cotchery could become something special for Sanchez and the Jets offense this season. I hope to never see Cotchery fielding punts again, he's just too important to our offense. As long as Revis returns, I'm pulling for Kyle Wilson as our punt returner and Joe McKnight as our kick returner. If Revis isn't with the team, there is no way in hell that Wilson should be fielding punts. Kyle Wilson was a tremendous punt returner with Boise State and Joe McKnight should make a huge impact as our KR man due to his talents in the open field.
If McKnight isn't on the active roster, my next option as a fan would be to have David Clowney as our kick returner.
Leonhard is a steady guy who will at least secure the ball and not let it bounce past him for another 15 years, even if he's not a dynamic returner. Sometimes that's all you need. As good as Wilson might be as a PR, there's no way the Jets put him back there and risk creating any leverage for Revis by getting Wilson hurt.
Yea I don't mind Leonhard, but having someone more dynamic back there could be huge for a team that's built on defense and running the ball. It's disappointing.
There may be times when they use a Clowney or someone more explosive, but if you have the lead late in a game and get a stop, you just want the ball back. That's when Leonhard seems like the right guy. Cotchery has done it in the past, too.
Since McKnight is most likely going to be inactive for most of the season, and Revis maybe coming back, it's Wilson's job.
That is a real leap of.... guesswork. And a guess I don't agree with for whatever that is worth, and it's worth nothing.
I never knew Rex said that, and I thank you for the information. Those would also be my exact thoughts. Without Revis, it would become too risky to put our #2 CB in harms way, but with Revis, hey, what can I say? He improves our entire team and would then give us the ability to put a talented punt returner (our nickel back) in position to make plays for our special teams.
Yeah, he said it during a press conference within the last two weeks. I don't remember when it was exactly but he was pretty lucid on the matter.
