Jets would be bonkers to release Bryce Petty. The only QB on the roster who is in danger of losing his roster spot is Geno Smith, and that's if he can't outperform Bryce Petty the rest of this preseason.
Didn't see the game. Who had the better showing last night, Geno or Petty? I know Geno had decent numbers, but numbers don't always tell the tale.
In my opinion, Petty. When the line actually gave Petty time, he showed better footwork, faster and more decisive decision making, better body language, and better poise in the pocket. Petty also barely missed on two or three throws that if connected could've been taken to the house. Geno still looks like Geno of old. What I saw on the field from him is what I'm used to seeing and not what we've been hearing about him in camp this year. He made two really nice throws but otherwise looked like crap. My biggest takeaway from the game is that all the wide receivers looked good. Others have mentioned Marshall and Peake for obvious reasons but the entire group played well right down to the guys I've never heard of at the bottom. It amazes me how in such a short time they went from having by far the worst WR corps in the entire league to making it a position of strength. The running game did not look good at all though. Also, Shell our 5th round pick, who everyone thought would be a Right Tackle, was out there playing LEFT tackle with the 2s and 3s, which I found to be interesting
people are going to have their opinions of course but it was actually pretty close. Geno Smith started slow but he finished strong. I dont know Jacksonville enough to know if its because they switched from 2s to 3s on defense or not. Smith's last 2 drives he was accurate and focused. Petty had some real flashes and his arm looked really strong but he also had some down moments too. I would say they both played pretty good though which really doesn't help change any decision regarding roster spots as they both looked like they belong on the roster and neither outshined the other by any wide margin.
The QB's played solid. They all threw a lot of good passes and had a few bad passes... thats what QB's do... they are human. Geno didn't play like "crap" at all.. He just so happened to get boo'd by America's greatest fan base after his incompletions so it made nothing seem like something bad. & of course, espn's headline "Fitz has solid opening; Geno gets boo'd" when really Fitz didn't do anything special and Geno played solid as well, didn't deserved to be boo'd assassination of character at it's finest.
Assassination of character? We're talking about a football game. You must work for the Hillary Clinton campaign. Sent from my KIW-L24 using Tapatalk
I thought Geno looked the same as he always does. Some good plays and some bad plays. That TD pass to Peake couldn't have been placed any better though. Petty looks more confident than last year. A little improved but Petty is going to have to outplay Geno by a wide margin to beat him out for #2.
Disappointed in Lachlan Edwards, he was Quigley-like last night, hopefully he gets better, I thought they cut Hackett too fast, as least give him some competition
Agree but remember Geno had tons of reps with the 1st and second team. Petty? For that reason I give Petty the edge.
I didn't see anybody mention it so I will... Erin Henderson was awful. He showed zero instincts, missed tackles and was flat out in the wrong position on multiple occasions. Please let me see Lee with the one's next game. The only thing Mauldin cannot do on that one play is let the back bounce to the outside, that was his responsibility, if you're not gonna make the tackle you have to funnel the runner back to the inside where your teammates are waiting. If we don't see better play from our linebackers next game I'll start to worry.
Offense: - I saw the same inconsistent Geno that I always see. Made a great throw on the Touchdown, but also made some bad throws and his footwork disappointed me. - Petty surprised me. Looked like a legitimate pro back there. Thought he moved pretty well in the pocket, and he has a hell of a arm. I'd be upset if the Jets cut Petty so Geno could be the backup. But thats what we have 3 more games for. - Peake and Marshall both looked like professional football players. I have a feeling they'll both make the roster. Thompkins is probably going to be very nervous come week 6 or 7. - Wanted to see Hackenburg, but not a huge deal at all. Defense - The first team run defense played poorly, but missing Wilkerson and Mclendon did play a role in that. Williams, however, looked like a beast - I saw exactly where Darron Lee will excel, and where he will struggle. He needs to get behind the line. I saw him get blown up a few times on run plays. - Mauldin didnt look great. Last night combined with his mediocre camp so far, I am getting a tiny bit concerned.
I thought Jenkins made a few good plays, Lee was very instinctive out there. Though, like everyone else was a little disappointed in Mauldin. Bruce Carter was making plays out there as well. Really like Carter's ability to cover as a linebacker. I am not as worried as you right now.
I was surprised to see he had 21 QB hits last year. Means he got close a lot but was just a step slow. Mo was in the 20s as well for comparison. Hopefully as the game slow down for him he's able to finish plays better.
