and who would have been our QB? petty? that hasn't worked out. he can't beat out McCown. Hack as a rookie? he can't beat out Petty and was redshirted. Geno? been there done that didn't work out. it's not like we had many options.
need an option for "2 wins more than whatever would put us in the top 3 picks." With that not being an option I went for the gusto.
I hear ya. Unfortunately that was not fresh in my mind. Brett Favre blowing a game there in 08 actually game to mind first.
Seriously, guy? You honestly think that Petty was ever given a fair shot to beat out McCown? If so, I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.
I would've gone with Petty and signed a cheaper vet. But in another example of evidence that MAcc might not really know much about talent - at least QB talent - he obviously believe Fitz could repeat his performance from 2015. That's not very comforting.
I totally disagree with your bolded sentence. Sorry but that just makes no sense. If that was the case, then why did he lowball Fitz at first, and only after a good while did he finally cave and sign him? If he really believed Fitz could repeat his 2015 season, he would have offered him more money and signed him immediately. He wouldn't have given other teams plenty of opportunities to sign him.
Why did he lowball him and then cave? Standard negotiation tactic. In the end he did give him $12 million attesting to the fact that he believed Fitz could probably repeat his 2015 effort. It really makes me question his ability to judge QBs.
if he believed that he would have given him the 3 year deal not wait until months and wind up giving him a 1 year deal. it was a nothing is better out there deal. It would be like blaming mack if McCown plays terrible this season for signing him. it's not the revis deal where he gave a large multiyear contract to someone who underperformed. he gave a 1 year deal to a QB who had a top 3 season as a jets QB all time.
He caved because he had no other choice. They weren't doing a full rebuild last year, and Petty wasn't ready to play, and Mac had already said that Hack wasn't going to play. Just because he caved and signed him doesn't mean that he thought Fitz could repeat his 2015 season. That's just ridiculous. Bowles had already said that Fitz was his starter and wanted him back. Both Marshall and Decker had spoken out and said they wanted Fitz back. I'm sure that Woody wanted him back as well. In addition, most Jets fans would have been apoplectic if Mac didn't bring Fitz back. I didn't want Fitz back, but I could certain see why Mac did bring him back eventually. Starting Petty made no sense last year and wouldn't have flown. Hack wasn't going to play much less start. What other choice did he have? There weren't really any good QBs available in FA, and none of them knew the Jets' offense.
I went with 6-10. Petty takes over after the Raider game at 0-2. Wins his the next 3 games then goes down with an injury. Hackenburg goes in and plays ugly for the rest of the year winning 3 over the next 11. Week 1: @ Bills L Week 2: @ Raiders L Week 3: vs Dolphins W Week 4: vs Jaguars W Week 5: @ Browns W Week 6: vs. Patriots L Week 7: @ Dolphins L Week 8: vs. Falcons L Week 9: vs. Bills W Week 10: @ Buccaneers L Week 11: BYE Week 12: vs. Panthers W Week 13: vs. Chiefs L Week 14: @ Broncos L Week 15: @ Saints L Week 16: vs. Chargers W Week 17: @ Patriots L
Looks like only 19% of Jets fans expect better than a (4-12) record. Pretty embarrassing and sad. I felt I was pretty reasonable with (5-11) and that a bounce or two could get them to (7-9) or bounce the other way and end up (3-13). Bring on the Bills!
I'm going with 5-11 and predict one (1) of those wins will come against somebody surprising. Maybe the Panthers, or the Chargers late in the year. And even though that sounds optimistic I also predict that somehow some way next spring the next great QB will slip through our fingers.
I think the Jets defense has a chance to be better than they've been given credit for. Also you'll notice I didn't give them any wins on the road!
