I chose Clemens. I believe he has the tools to be the starter, and secondly, I hate the fact that we drafted Sanchez. I think we had larger needs during the offseason, and could have been filled by staying put or trading back in the draft. We could have stuck it out with Clemens, and signed a free agent QB. If they bomb this year, draft one of the 50 freaking QB's next year. That being said, if Sanchez becomes a halfway decent Quarterback, and Clemens sucks or gets the shaft this year, I will support Sanchez as My teams QB. Best case scenario, Clemens becomes the starter, and has a pro bowl season with Sanchez on his heels (truly, and not for selling seats). Next year may be the best draft in recent years, and could use some extra picks.
Clemens carried a horrible team and came a drop away from posting a .500 record, only to get shitcanned by Woody twice. Unless he totally psyches himself out, I think he's the obvious choice. I love Sanchez as much as the next guy but I think Clemens was the real deal and should have been chad's heir.
If Sanchez starts Week 1 and Clemens never gets his chance, I bet he will succeed elsewhere, as Chad did going to Miami. Except, I bet Clemens does better. I'm talking about in 2010.
It doesn't matter who I want - I feel Clemens has the upper hand with his knowledge of the offense, and I honestly feel he has the ability to get it done. I expect Sanchez to do okay in the preseason, but I think Clemens is going to show his command of the offense. In the end I think Rex will have to make a choice - go for broke with Clemens ... or most likely write this season off starting a rookie. Some people will point out what Atlanta & Baltimore did last season .... I can turn around & point to a hell of alot more teams that started rooks & didn't do shit. The odds are against the Jets with Sanchez in there this season. A part of me wants to get it started with Sanchez .... another part wants to see what Clemens can do & how far he can take us.
I want the best player to play. With that said, I hope they're both equally awesome and that Clemens is given the nod over Sanchez for year 1. Our receivers this year aren't terribly good and the quarterbacks role is going to be diminished for this season. Even with that, I would prefer to see Clemens run the offense effectively enough that he has trade value at the end of the season, and we can get something for him before he leaves the Jets. I believe the one year on the bench could help Sanchez learn the game and become more comfortable for when he finally starts. With that said, I'd also be comfortable with Sanchez taking over after 4-8 games if Clemens isn't getting the job done. If Sanchez is clearly better than Clemens in training camp, I'll change my vote to him.
Lets run this poll again after at least 2 preseason games. I need to see Sanchez at real NFL speed to know if he has enough of a grasp of the situation to be the week 1 starter. Not that the preseason is a great judge of success, the offenses are vanilla and defenses hold back, but it can be a big indicator of failure. Not failure as in a bust, but just not ready yet. Until then, I have no more clue than any of us do.
David Carr was just too easy to figure out. He was a true pocket passer with terrible feet coming out of college, and everybody in the NFL but the Texans realized that a premium needed to be placed on the O-line in front of him. He wouldn't be able to make plays otherwise, and he was easily pressured into poor throws. He also never seemed mature enough to improve his decision making. Instead, with every multi-sack game, his confidence dropped precipitously. Whatever anyone says about our QBs and their weaknesses, mental toughness isn't an issue, even if Kellen's decision making does seem to take a hit with pressure.
I hope Sanchez looks good in camp and is able to start. If I had to guess what will happen I think the two QBs are "neck-and-neck" in camp and therefore Ryan will go with his boy Sanchez. I'm shocked the poll is split 50-50. How can you be pulling for Clemens over Sanchez?
Why not? They're both Jets. Clemens is in a much better position to contribute than Sanchez and Sanchez won't be hurt by sitting a year. On the other hand, if Clemens doesn't get the chance to prove himself, we essentially lose a second rounder or possibly the better of the two QBs. I'll be happy with either but I think starting Clemens makes more sense.
I would just think at this point fans would be hoping Sanchez looks good by the end of camp and can start. Wouldn't you be pumped? If Clemens looks great and Sanchez struggles a bit in camp then fine start Clemens and I'll root for him. But I'd be a bit disappointed.
I voted for Clemens, but I honestly don't mind who starts against the Texans. As long as the Jets are playing in February within the next five years, let the chips fall where they may.
So before camp Sanchez has the edge 56-48. Interesting. So far after 2 days of camp not much has been learned. We'll see how it goes.
I held off as long as I could. I'm going with the kid......i love his work ethic. I don't think Clemens has what it takes......
i agree bro. by far the best post ive ever seen you make. cut or trade clemens now and sign vick as the back-up. a much better insurance policy with nfl experience.
I'd rather have Clemens throwing footballs from a wheelchair......than see Vick in a green/white uniform.
