A real shame, awful news for him of course, and terrible news for the team as well. I originally predicted an explicitly optimistic 7-9 for the team, but it's hard to see more than two or three more wins for the rest of the season with the team decimated on both sides of the ball this way.
Yes. Underrated and under appreciated IMO..... if he played on a better team (O=Line) I think that wouldve been different. Not a "Bell-cow" type, but like you said, good burst with big play potential. (seemed like a good dude too)
He ran for over 4 YPC on a SHIT Giants team last year. Not a world beater by any means, but he's a not awful.
Despite never taking that next step, Powell’s been a good Jet — relatively consistent during multiple transition periods. I’ve always rooted for him, and will wish him well on whichever team he ends up on next. For the Jets, it’s just one week till McGuire comes back. I’ve definitely got doubts about Crowell and Cannon can hold up long term, but would they be serviceable for the Bears? Bates could game plan for just two backs and run a bunch of I formations with Tomlinson at FB. Crowell does his best work when he’s got time to be patient anyways. Guess we’ll see.
Sad times. I've like him ever since his draft year. Not a great RB but a very good part that we never found the right balance for.
Hector is a really good comp for Powell. A guy who could do everything but wasn't a star at any point. If Powell was a bit less injury prone he might have been Curtis Martin reincarnate. That's how good his fundamentals are.
Martin's best trait was his durability and availability ao Powell would need to be a lot more than "a little bit less injury prone" to be considered the next Curtis Martin.
The way he ran reminded me of Tiki Barber. Not very big and not possessed of blazing speed, but patient, following blocks and somehow able to find holes in the line. Tiki, of course, was a featured back in their offense. Yes, he had a good OL to run behind but that wasn't always the case. He put up 1000 yd seasons running behind some bad OL's too. Always thought the Jets should have relied on Powell a lot more than they did as a runner. He was a pretty good receiver too.
it appears we have seen the last of Powell in a Jet uniform,,,,,too bad we all seemed to like and root for this guy. In other news we replace him with a safety = O LORD
Ugh. So, hey, guys, maybe it's purely coincidence, but I'm trying to re-invent myself. Which look do you prefer? This: or this? I'll start a poll!
I was going to start a Thank You Powell thread, but I will just post it here. It sucks that he injured his neck and that his Jets career and potentially NFL career is likely over. He has been a great Jet ever since he arrived here. One of the most reliable #2 backs in the NFL. Could have gotten more carries or playing time on other rosters, but he loves being a Jet. You have to appreciate that. Hopefully he is able to play at least one more year, but if not: Thanks for everything, Bilal!
Wasn't a huge fan of Powell when he came out of Louisville and I was underwhelmed early on in his Jets career--he looked like a straight down hill runner who buried his head and plowed forward into the backs of lineman. But he grew on me more and more and now I love the guy--he's been a really solid back, became a much more patient and explosive runner the last few years and an exemplary Jet. I hope we can find a way to keep him.
i wouldn't want to give up much for a RB. i think were fine with crowell and maguire coming back and cannon. should be more then enough. we could bring back flowers at FB as well. if we did want to swing a trade I wouldn't mind giving up a 6th or 7th for abdullah from Det. always liked the kid but has a fumbling issue but he can run and catch and is buried on their depth chart behind blount, johnson, and riddick.
I was at the game so I didn't see the TV coverage of the play, but from where I was seated I had a clear view of the hole Bilal was entering, and the collision he took-on. It looked pretty much head-on, and violent. He had zero time to prepare for the shot he took. As bad as it is, I'm glad it was not worse.
