probably not a lot I would imagine. He’s kinda washed at this point.

wish they woulda signed Clowney when he was just sitting there looking for a job

So Chandler Jones is washed but Clowney isnt?

I don’t think either are useless but I think almost every NFL team would take Jones over Clowney straight up.

That was the year he got hurt. The previous year he went fuckin nuts.

I wouldn't say he's not what he used to be when he just had 19 sacks in 2019

Clowney is a great run defender, not so great of a pass rusher.

Jones cost 16 million this year and becomes a FA after the season. Its just not a good idea, or at least, I wouldn't give up anything more than a 4th for him.

Was he hurt the whole 5 games he played? Honest question. I thought he got hurt in the 5th game and was out for the season. If he was fighting the injury I’d be a little more interested. But right now , eh, can’t see giving anything Arizona might want to take that contract considering everything.

Keep in mind that we don't know how the DL actually looks because Q has been MIA. As good as he can be, he's going to make a huge difference, not only in the running game, but also pressure up the middle which will allow some of the guys rushing from the edge to do much better.

I really don't want JD to pull a panic move here and tie us up for the future when we should be turning the corner.

I wasn't sure where to put this, and maybe it needs its own thread or a bump of a previous Saleh thread, but this quote in the NY Post caught my attention:
Jets defense's troubling performance may be cause for concern (nypost.com)

"“Again, it goes back to third down,” Saleh said of the corners. “They can be great on first and second down. They can be great the entire game, but it comes down to one-on-one in a third-down situation, especially in those 4-to-7 ranges, and you’ve got to win. Obviously, from a scheme standpoint, we can always do things to mess with the quarterbacks so it’s not so easy for them. But at the same time, in these situations, when we’re trying to get a grade evaluation and trying to get good some clips for them, it just comes down to playing with great technique and winning.”

Someone in another thread used the word "refreshing" referring to watching Zach play vs. Darnold, and that word seems apt here. How often have we heard Gase, Bowles, Rex, et. al. give us meaningless tripe when asked what happened? Here Saleh says exactly what happened: guys didn't do their job and win their assignment on 3rd down. That's clear and understandable and observable, not the murky drech that most coaches spout.

    Refreshing.

And you can bet your ass those players will be held accountable and either step up or step out of the way for someone who does win their match ups.

I dont think they would. And its not straight up anyway. To acquire Chandler Jones you will need to give up an asset just for the right to pay him 14.5 million. Clowney coulda been had completely free for 8.5 mill

hes better against the run, no doubt. We could use that too.

But I suspect he will finish with more sacks than Chandler Jones this year. He's pretty much assured to finish with more than Carl Lawson

Yeah but if you were trying to determine how much someone has left in the tank and then compare two players based off of that, it is straight up. I just think it’s A little out there to claim that a guy who had 19 sacks two years ago and missed last season because of injury is washed while a guy that hasn’t produced much in years is the way we should have gone.

theres nobody that I can think of that'd REALLY contribute that would NOT exceed the amount we're likely willing to shell out

How about Fowler? Not a huge his salary, had a good year with the rams before getting paid by the falcons, knows ulbrich and saleh . Contract expires this year. We’ve seen him be productive with a force in the inside. Might be able to recreate that here with Q.

Yup. First name I thought of when I saw this news. It all makes perfect sense. And yes he’s put up some stickers but Saleh clearly knows how to get the most out of guys that can rush the QB. Then like you said… Q and Rankins would have been the two best IDL in Atlanta and Q is in my opinion, a top 5 IDL in the league. I’m on board for a day 3 pick.

If Douglas can improve the team now without creating problems either now or in the future, he'll consider it. So what does that translate to?

He's not likely to sign/trade for a legit stud pass rusher even if he could find one. They'd be too expensive, and come with the huge question of: why are they available?

He's not likely to sign a rehab project or CBPY-type unless it costs him virtually nothing, and again, if someone like that is still available, it means every other has decided he wasn't worth it.

He already has a stable full of young possibilities, so why would he look to sign/trade for another?

I think JD and Saleh are prepared to let the "D" sink or swim and assess what the long term needs are, and then look at the upcoming FA and draftees to see who can be the long term solution. In the meantime, as Saleh said after last night's game: "Guys have to win their one on one battles, especially on 3rd down".

The counter point to this is joe Douglas knows that stable has no real possibilities hence the news today

I’m thinking a conditional pick based on performance and resigning.

The Jets are like an obese hooker at this point. Going through the motions but nobody but the people trapped under them care much.
