49ers director of player personnel Tom Gamble turned down chance for 2nd interview w/ Jaguars to concentrate on trying to land Jets GM job. https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/287597244302123009
This guy seems like a solid choice:up: I'm thinking if he turned down an interview he feels like he's got a real good shot to land the job.
What exactly does a director of player personnel do? I'm down with anyone from the 49ers organization coming to our organization, I'm just wondering what his actual duties were.
Tom Gamble is in his 24th NFL season and his seventh year with the 49ers. On February 4, 2011, Gamble was promoted to Director of Player Personnel after having served as the Director of Pro Personnel for the previous seven years in San Francisco. Gamble’s extensive NFL resume includes work in both college and pro scouting, contract negotiations, and a stint in the coaching ranks. While working closely with General Manager Trent Baalke, Gamble oversees both the college and pro personnel efforts. In his previous role, Gamble monitored every NFL roster with an emphasis on scouting talent of upcoming pro free agents, while also maintaining continuous depth of personnel on the 49ers roster. In 2010, Gamble had been assigned additional responsibilities in collegiate scouting in order to maximize the use of his extensive experience in talent evaluation. During his time in the NFL, Gamble has helped build nine playoff teams – five with Indianapolis and four with Philadelphia. Prior to his arrival in San Francisco, Gamble served as a college scout for the Colts from 1998 to 2004 under veteran NFL executive Bill Polian. http://www.49ers.com/team/staff/tom-gamble/17f5afbb-6679-4250-bc18-6bfb470bb433
Looks like he has a lot of experience in every area of the job. Personnel is a big weakness for us and he seems like an expert. Just take a look at the 49ers roster.
great news. he is on the top of my list. he will have the same vision as rex on how this team should be assembled
Agreed. And also include "Character clauses" in any contracts going forward with management personnel. His #1 job is to restore credibility to the franchise and if that takes a heavy handed approach, so be it as in this case, the ends justifies the means.
The hiring of Gamble would also explain why Rex wasn't needed for a meet and greet, since he's known Gamble for over 20yrs and worked under Buddy with the Eagles. Looks like Rex can relax now.
Great. My understanding is that he's one of the top guys available, if not the top guy. So I guess the Jets' job isn't so undesirable after all. So all we have to do now is root for SF's season to end so he can turn his attention here.
It's hard to say exactly what Gamble's impact on the Colts talent from 1998 to 2004 was because of Manning and Polian, however here are the 1st and 2nd round picks of the Colts over that span + notable players in later rounds: 1998 - 1st Peyton Manning (QB), 2nd Jerome Pathon (WR), 4th Steve McKinney (G). 1999 - 1st Edgerrin James (RB), 2nd Mike Peterson (LB), 7th Hunter Smith (P) 2000 - 1st Rob Morris (LB), 2nd Marcus Washington (LB) 2001 - 1st Reggie Wayne (WR), 2nd Idrees Bashir (S), 4th Ryan Diem (G), 2002 - 1st Dwight Freeney (DE), 2nd Larry Tripplett (DT), 4th David Thornton (LB) 2003 - 1st Dallas Clark (TE), 2nd Mike Doss (S), 5th Robert Mathis (DE) 2004 - 2nd Bob Sanders (S), 5th Jake Scott (G) I may have missed somebody whose career ended prematurely due to injury. There were also a number of significant roleplayers picked during those 7 years, like Donald Strickland, Ben Hartsock and David Macklin and players with relatively short careers that featured a lot of starts like Cato June and Jason David. All in all it is a very impressive 6 year run with no absolute busts taken in the 1st round and the 2nd rounders well represented also. The Colts tended to get another very good player later in most drafts as well. Having Peyton Manning really helped, since so many of the early picks were on the offensive side of the ball and he obviously helped raise his team mates contributions some.
So can Gamble officially accept any position before the 49ers are knocked out of the playoffs? Can he even make a handshake agreement? I'm sure behind-the-scenes they can but basically we shouldn't be expecting any kind of announcement before the 49ers are done, correct?
not counting any chickens but hopeful that all the t's get crossed and the i's get dotted and he can get started on the big job at hand beginning Tuesday
