I'm also not sure if the Broncos are fine with trading Champ Bailey, a 1st and a 2nd for Revis. Not sure if Revis is so much better than Bailey that it warrants also losing a 1st and 2nd for the upgrade. Especially when you factor in Revis' questionable health and looming contract extension.
The Broncos almost have to trade Bailey if they want to fit Revis in under the cap. The only reason it makes sense for them to go get Revis is that they have a really short Super Bowl window with Peyton Manning and they are paying several other players at a very high level over the next few seasons also. Dumervil is guaranteed $31 million over the next 3 seasons.
I think the Broncos could fit Revis under cap this the upcoming season and maybe work out a long term deal afterwards. That's why I suggested a Chris Harris trade, he's better then Wilson IMO, he's still on his rookie contract and would make a solid #2 with Cromartie.
Interesting Scenario. I've been playing a couple 3 way trade ideas myself. First one works with either the Eagles or the Lions. And admittedly this one is a little iffy. But for now I'm going to assume the Lions, and bear with me through the details. Jets send Revis and Holmes +pay around 5.5-6M of Holmes salary for 2013. This sounds like a cap hit, But Holmes cap number is 12.5M for 2013, 11.25 if the jets cut him, but assuming I've read correctly it's only a 3.75M cap hit if he's traded (due to accelerated bonuses) so assume 6M, that's approx 9.75 against the cap or savings of just under 3M...which ironically is the extra cap hit we take from trading Revis. In other words it makes the trade cap Neutral to the Jets. Why the Lions accept Holmes? He's a perfect #2 receiver behind Megatron. Holmes isn't a #1, he doesn't handle double teams well, but as a number 2 he would thrive with Megatron on the other side. Okay, So Lions get Revis, Holmes, +say 6M just to make it a little better for the Lions. Enter third team, the Rams, the rams have a high need for a quality left tackle, there are only 2 or 3 really can't miss Left tackles in the draft and they'll all be gone by the time the Rams select at 16. And this is the really iffy part of the trade. Lions send #5 pick to the Rams, Lions send picks their 2nd and 5th round picks to the Jets, plus a conditional 2014 pick (explained below). Rams send pick #16 to the Jets, and their 3rd round to the Jets Rams send Pick 22 to the Lions (who didn't want to trade out of the first round). Rams get to draft one of the two top left tackles in the draft at that point. Jets in the end get a 1st, a second, a third, and a 5th, and a condtional 2014 3rd round pick that can escalate to a 1st round pick if Revis signs an extension with the Lions. It's a little iffy as it hinges on STL being willing to trade up to improve their O-line, and from what I've read their cap space is tight with no clear cuts to be made and assuming the needs are correctly interpreted. Saffold is an okay tackle for them but really should be at right tackle. But then again, I'm not a GM (thankfully)
I'd be pretty ecstatic with a 1, 2, 3, 5 and future 3/1, but I think that is so far outside the realm of possibility. I'd be pretty happy with just a first in the top half of the draft.
The original scenario was Quit Ducking Revis idea, I just modified it a bit. I agree with Petey that the Broncos are giving up too much even under my scenario. I think the 4th from the Lions goes to the Broncos not the Jets. I also think the 2nd is probably wishful thinking. I think it's important to wrap our heads around the basic fact that while Darrelle Revis has potentially great value in a deal the Jets are not in a position to realize that value. The injury is a big factor. The fact that Revis cannot be franchised is a big factor. The bargaining that Revis and his agents will be doing through the media, featuring absurd contract terms that he is unlikely to get will be a big factor. We're going to be very lucky to get more than a 1st round pick for Revis and I doubt it will be a high pick if it's a straight up deal. That 1st round pick will still be a lot better than the alternative of watching Revis walk for a sandwich pick at the end of the 3rd round in 2015.
I'd trade Revis & Holmes to the Lions for switching places in the first round, two 2nd round picks and Titus Young.
Oh I agree it's far fetched, though if you think about it, the lions are really in that scenario geetting Revis and Holmes to move down in the draft in the first and give up a 2nd and 5th. Now granted they lose a 3rd in 2014, or a first in 2014 if the Lions extend Revis. Of course that would all be contigent on the Rams moving up to grab one of the premire tackles in the draft. Without that the whole thing falls apart and the most the Jets could get out of the Lions at that point would be a maybe a second for Revis with a conditional 2014. The whole key to the theory is the Lions don't actually lose a first round in 2013, they just move down quite a bit.
That all said, I don't think the Jets will trade Revis unless they get at least a 1st this year a conditional in 2014., regardless of who's in the picture. Addendumlus, if the market is heating up as things are indicating, never be surprised by how much in the heat of an auction the price goes. If there truly are 5 or 6 or more teams interested I'll guarentee that at least 3 picks will be involved, one or more of them being condtional picks.
Actually, and sorry for posting a third reply here, but something else to consider. We tend to think of these things as isolated trades between two teams in a vaccum. Let us suppose, for a moment, that reports are true and teams are biting at the bit for Revis. A few things to consider. 1) Players of Revis's calibur almost never become available on the trade market. 2) What ever team trades for him, assuming one does, has a years worth of exclusive bargaining rights to extend him which gives the trading team the inside track to retaining his services. 3) Let us suppose that there really are say up to 10 teams interested in him. Say 3 of those teams are in the same division, for example Greenbay, Minnesota, and Detroit. There you have the makings of a bidding war where things could go over the top. Now Chicago might get involved even if they weren't really interested just to drive the price higher for the other 3 team, That is a very competitive and pass heavy division, a player like Revis could tip the balance. I've seen stranger things happen in my life watching sports transactions, I've even seen teams bidding against themselves. In the end, it really depends on what the actual interest level is and how much it heats up. Never underestimate the value of pitting two or three rivals against each other in a bidding war.
This is all true. I think the thing that is helping the Jets the most in this situation is that the draft lacks elite talent at the top of the draft. It's one of the weaker drafts in recent history. That's making everybody re-evaluate the value of a 1st round pick this year.
Bailey's contract The contract will pay Bailey a fully guaranteed $11 million salary in 2011, $11 million in 2012 and $10.5 million in both 2013 and 2014, when Bailey will be 36 years old. Being on the roster in the first week of the 2011 season will trigger a guarantee worth $4 million for 2012. Bailey's remaining $7 million salary in 2012 will be guaranteed against injury, and it will become fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the league year. The industry will report Bailey's new contract as a four-year, $43 million deal (incentives can push it to $47 million) with $22 million guaranteed. Read more: Broncos sign Champ Bailey to 4-year deal - The Denver Post http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_17456917#ixzz2JBfpswxe There was no signing bonus. The $22M in guarantees were satisfied in the 2011 and 2012.
March 12 is the start of the league year. Only 6-7 more weeks of speculation. The draft is 3 months away.
Why not Buffalo? If Buffalo wants to fork over the necessary assets, they can have Revi$. Wilson is 100 years old. If he wants to invest how much of his cap in Williams and Revi$,it will fun watching Buffalo fit the remaining players around those 2 big contracts. Buffalo hasn't had a good team in 20 years.
I'd have no issue with pairing hm up with the Amish pop gun, but between Fitzpatrick, super Mario, and Mevi$, they couldn't fit the other 50 players under the cap.
everytime i see this thread "possible revis spots" every single time. i think oh man this poor guy and feel like if i open it up that the op will be opining about how he had a one night stand with some girl and he woke up a few days later and he had revis spots all over his butt and lower back.
I love how too many posters here think that a difficult contract negotiation is always the fault of the player. Last contract negotiation, did Revis get overpaid? No. Now it seems to be an urban legend around here that Revis will insist on getting paid some astronomical amount. Then someone else will say the Pats will take him, or get him in FA. So the Pats will be willing to pay every penny of that astronomical amount??? Where's the logic in that? The Jet FO was just as much to blame for the holdout last time Revis did a new contract. And in fairness to both parties, they came up with a level of compensation that was fair. Revis went on to earn his salary, and the Jets did not overpay him. Anyone who calls him Mevis is just a Jet FO homer.
The Jets should have let Revis sit it out in 2010 and then tolled over his contract if he didn't come in after 10 games. That's where Tannenbaum lost control of the Revis situation and the Jets have never gotten control back again. That's where no tag came from. That's where $16M a year for the first couple of years came in, and the assumption the last two years would be removed to make them similar. It's over with Revis. The only question left is whether the Jets get more than the 3rd round compensation in 2015.
