I think it's hard to assess a team's identity two games in. So far we seem to have a big play offense and a patchy defense, the exact opposite of what was expected...
Funny, but 2010 may not be that far offbase IF this team keeps up a steady improvement position by position. Things being fluent as they are in the NFL, it COULD happen sooner for us as it's happened for other teams in the recent past (Carolina and Jax, Bengals....). We might even take a quantum leap as well before then but conservatively speaking, at our current rate of progress, 2010 isn't that far off the reservation for a genuine SB run. 2008 might be a bit closer to what happens though... But, we're speaking about today Champ. The nearterm progress and what's needed moreso in the "here and now"...
They don't always work out, but you cannot let that stop you from trying again. As I am looking at the draft next year, I am targeting a behemoth NT and a stud RB. I'd actually just as soon sign a RT in free agency, provided anyone good is available.
Clarett is a bum and a waste of talent, Peterson is completely the opposite the guy is a beast and ill be pissed if we dont get him
2010? Ehh, that seems a bit far off. If Mangini hasn't got this group into shape for a deep playoff run for the 2008 season, then I don't think he's up for the job. IN fact, IMO, he needs to make the playoffs nexrt year. The days of the 5 year rebuilding projects went out with Waltons 5 year plan.
I'm with ya on '08 too. If Mangini is as detail-oriented as he appears to be, with skillful drafting and shrewed FA pickups, '08 should be a good target. It sure would be more probable if we start to get away from "filler" and start getting some above average talent on this roster..
I believe the Jets need exactly *5* blue chippers on their team... those would be... LT, LG, C, RG, RT
Outside of RB I think are needs are mostly on the right side of the offensive and defensive lines: 1. 3-4 Pass Rushing ROLB Mangini can try to move Thomas all over the place the the fact remains that he is not a very good pass rusher. Thomas belongs solely on the strong side because of his prowess against the run. 2. RB Given the full load I think Barlow can and will be decent but he is not the long-term anwer. Blaylock is awful, Washington is nothing more than a 3rd down back and Houston is just sh*t out of luck. 3. 3-4 RDE Ellis, Ball and Hamilton are better suited on the left side. Ball is great as Ellis' back up and playing on the right on passing downs for pass rushing purposes. Hamilton is just another body. However on the right we just Kimo, who's old. We could move Robertson there but I think he won't be w/ us next year. 4. RT Clemens is a stop-gap and Jones can't seem to play well on the right side.* 5. ROG It may be a personal thing but I don't like Moore; I would love to see us upgrade and add depth at this position. 6. FB I still don't know why we cut Sowell. 7. TE Baker needs help. *Mangini's experiment w/ Jones at LOG paid off last week w/ Kendall hurt and Katnik getting man-handled. Jones at LOG made a lot of sense since in the past he seemed to play better at left tackle than right. With Fergy at LT, Jones' future w/ the Jets was not going to be at that position. Now w/ this subtle shift to LG, we may have the long term answer at LOG when Kendall moves on. This would give us youth and athleticism a C, LOG and LT.
To be conservative; let's say we finish 7-9 or 8-8 which is very possible. How would be pull off getting Adrian Peterson?
since we don't know when we'll pick it's too early to start throwing names around. but if the Skins keep losing, and we finish somewhere in the middle, i think one of the early picks (probably R2), needs to be on a pass-rusher a la Terrell Suggs. he wreaks havoc on QB's, and for that, he's a gamechanger. i expect us to sign an OL in the Offseason, to give us even more flexibility heading into April. i mean, we seemed close to signing Runyan this past Offseason, so i think they'll snag someone next time around. obviously, RB is of utmost need, but among RB, OL, and a pass-rusher, we may be able to take the best player available at one of those positions, which I would be fine with. but i don't think R2 ends without us having already added a Feature Back. cheers
That means we will probably be soewhere around 13-15, we could trade that pick and our 2 2nd rounders for somewhere in the top 5 for peterson.
RB is a need but to trade up for one would be foolish. Especially since we honestly don't know what we have yet in Houston/Washington... things could change over the course of the season.
While I like Peterson, he isn't worth that much, he is getting worked like a dog in Oklahoma and will have some mileage on him, and plus we have more glaring needs that we could use the 2 2nd rounders for like a RT and a NT or a 3-4 OLB
Every time I see this thread I think of the one that undertow started after the 05 draft. Man, I miss that thread.
