I think after all these years, the Jets CS simply isn't accustomed to having a QB of Farve's calibre and as such, might be a bit skittish about letting Farve be Farve at the end of games. I think that confidence comes with time although it doesn't take a genius to figure that Farve might have done this once or twice before..
Yes they had about 1:45 left, but they had no time outs. Yes, they got within striking distance, but none of Chad's throws in or near the endzone were really that threatening. The run took two additional plays away from the Dolphins. That's big against a guy that can't through it well to the sidelines.
We won the game without giving away anything to future opponents, two of the toughest of which we face in the next 2 weeks. I had no problems with the calls on offense. Like everyone, I hate prevent defense. But we also gave away near zero blitz packages, which will come in handy to keep hidden away until needed against a tougher opponent. So while it was ugly, it served its purpose, and we come away from this game with solid poker faces for next week.
Both excelent point Hiker. We did not give up anything this week late in a game we should have won. Now coming into a APts game we should win ( if Brady is out) We have a few plays left in the tank. I'm happy with the win and actually looking forward to a PAts game for the first time in a long time.
I'm new around here, but have been around message boards for quite a few years, and have been a Jets fan even longer. I'd like to direct this post at the fans who criticize those of us pointing out shortcomings and failures in strategy and gameplay. I'm certain that every Jet fan is happy with a win. It's the first game of the year, we're playing a division rival and we're still acclimating a new QB into our system. We won. Excellent. That said, there's nothing wrong with pointing out the glaring mistakes that were made in the process. We as fans all want to win the Super Bowl. However, in order to do that a team needs to play a certain way and have coaches make good decisions. There are times when one win is not enough. You need to see your squad show you that it's ready to move to the next level and prove itself as a team that will and CAN compete against anyone in the league. Today, against a team that went 1-15 last year and is in a transitional year, we played a subpar game and were lucky to come away with the win. If Parcells was coaching the Jets, what do you think his postgame press conference would have sounded like? Do you think he'd be focusing on Favre's two TD passes and praising the play of the Jets secondary or do you think he'd be worried about the awful penalties, a subpar kicking game and an inability to put away a weakened opponent? I think the latter and rightly so. Please, people...we're all fans and just because some of us are willing to critique the team doesn't mean we're not happy to come away with a win. It just means we're looking ahead to bigger and better things and worrying how this team will handle them.
A few observation by an untrained eye This is a 4-12 team coming off last season, With a vast array of substanstial upgrades. The jets surely were confident they could win the game, but how they would do it was the question, and these questions plagued the players throughout the game. 1) how would brett fare with the crash course in training camp. 2) The uncertainty of the LC play , also not much practice , and the chemistry. 3) The jelling of the O/Line 4) the jelling of the D especially to see what Gholston would do, (very pleasant surprise by Lowry's play by the way) 5) The intangible of Chad knowing our system and the adjustments to be made because of such. 6) NOT your fins of last year with shored up D-Line and O-line. In summary, I think we should have won and we did, It may not have been dominant but we FOUND THE WAY TO WIN, I was leary of how it would go because of the above intangible's but we will grow from here.... REMEMBER GUYS, THESE ARE THE JETS.....THE DEFINITION OF INCONSISTENCY AND AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER COASTER. I will say 1 thing that glared out to me, Farve is not a disciplined player and definitely makes it exciting, but dangerous non-the-less,,,,, look at the play to Stucky....off the back foot/hail mary....not good though it worked in our favor,,, another thing I noticed, after Favre evaded the rusher, he lost cognition to remember he was be hind him coming for the sack/knocked ball..... a few thoughts on what I saw...PS, Stupid challenge by mangini on the "forward motion " challenge, clearly that ball was knocked out before he had forward motion, waste of time out. Any way.... thoughts, agreements , disputes, flames.etc.....
I agree with you on that, but you need to remember, Favre's still learning this offense. Why open him up to mistakes, by making him chuck the hell outta the ball. He needs to build a repore with these recievers.
3rd and 7 and you need a 1st to ice the game and they call for a run!! The QB was 15 for 22. 3rd and 7 run works less than 20% and you got a HOF QB throwing 70%. I get the time off the clock argument and in retrospect it ultimately worked only because the dolphins were not quite good enough to make us pay---but there are plenty of teams that can. Too conservative.
Onefanjet: Not picking a fight but on the TD pass to Stuckey what other options did Favre have and what was the downside if he was unsuccessful? As I see it: 1. Can't Punt from 22. 2. Kicker is injured so the FG is out. 3. Incomplete, Miami ball on 22. 4 Intercepted in end zone, Miami ball on 20 and 5. Intercepted at 2 yardline, Miami ball and probably inside 20, better to bat it down and go right out to 22. Put it up and let someone fight to make a play and Stuckey looks like a keeper. Discipline or lack of it isn't an issue on this play IMO. For better or worse, you got a gamer on your hands who believes he can make the plays. You have no idea how mediocre GB really was from 99'-mid 06' and they kept putting together mostly decent seasons cause #4 hates losing. This is just how I saw it.
My sentiments exactly. If you can't trust Favre (who has been in the league for 16 years) to protect the ball then there is a problem. The sentiment that Penny couldn't possibly lead them to score just doesn't wash in my book. I don't think we'll change any minds though.
I think people need to realize that Favre hasn't had very much time with the team yet. As the season goes on, and Favre gets more experience with the play book and the rest of the team, I bet they will be more aggressive with the play calling on offense. My problem with the coaches was the defense. They were getting good pressure on Pennington and then decided to drop back every play. They also tried to protect the sidelines even though Pennington has never been able to beat teams outside the numbers. They should know that better than anyone else, I mean, he was a Jet a few weeks ago. I know it was hot as hell in Miami, but it shouldn't have forced the Jets into a prevent defense.
Great post and welcome.... I think your post is the big diffence between those of us who have seen this franchise fail ie; mudbowl, falling to the Pats in 85, Kosar late hit, Buddy Ryan punching Gilbride etc.. We have two types of fans on this site, the older people which I would consider myself to be in although I vaguely remember the 85 season. Those of us who have seen the harsh reality of being a Jets fan tend to criticize more than the younger generation who probably don't remember much from the 80's or 90's. I think the key is while we are all happy with a W and at the end of the day regardless of how bad you play a win is a win. There just are certain things that we know better teams will exploit if we do that same thing.
I'm not going to comment on the entire second half but the playcalling wasn't that bad on the last drive. It's the last three minutes of the game and we were up, that's when you run the ball! If Favre turns the ball over on a pass, we're screwed. If Favre doesn't complete the pass the clock stops and the Phins have more time to run their offense. If Favre throws a short pass that doesn't get the first down we're in the same situation. There's no need to risk the turnover when your up by one score and there's a big difference between playing smart and playing scared. Keep it the back's hands, run the clock, and let the defense we just dumped a crap-load of money into win the game. If anything, the prevent defense that we were running on the final drive was the thing that hurt us the most. The defense was looking to stop the long pass play and giving up the outside when they were facing a dink-and-dunk QB looking to get off quick throws to the sidelines. Of course all of this would have been irrelivant had Woody not been flagged for a false start on the play that should have won us the game in the first place. I hope he's running ten laps for that one and Barton can join him for his roughing penalty.
Favre made the right play there. As others said, it was fourth dowm on the 22. You may as well throw up a jump ball because worst case senario is an incomplete pass comes back to the 22. No doubt in my mind he did the right thing.
Correct. I think people are forgetting that was 4th and 13 and the only reason we wern't kicking a fg is that Nugent was hurt.
Good Points, Didn't look at it from that perspective, guess I just really "know" Farve yet, all I keep hearing is that "he does what he wants" despite called plays, and that he "throws as many interceptions as TD's". Now I can't back that up, just, like I said.... getting to know him....
People defending the play calling in the 4th quarter...come on. Be serious. BB up in New England....Parcells..the great teams...they RARELY give you the chance to get the ball back. BB has on many occasion, thrown the ball on first down when running the clock out (taking advantage of a team stacking the line early). Great teams stab you in the heart. Some will say the Jets arent great. True. At least try teaching your team to be great. You NEVER intentionally give the ball back to the other team when they would have a chance to win the game. By running the ball on 3rd and 7, you are INTENTIONALLY giving the ball back. That is a cardinal sin. We had a coach here for 6 years named Herm Edwards that many, including myself, crucified for being way to conservative. If thats the case, call a spade a spade....Mangini played the game exactly like Herm would have....minus taking the knee. I guarantee you this..Mangini will never do that again. They can all cover everyones ass all they want now. That wont happen again.
Jaywayne12 you hit the nail right on the head. If can't trust your 16 year veteran to not throw a INT on third and 7 in that situation (I contend that the 2nd and 6 play would have a perfect time to call a play-action pass) then there really is a problem. Even if the pass wasn't complete and the Dolpins wouldn't have had the time to call a timeout with 2:00 so what? With that amount of time a timeout is not as important as icing the game right there. Even if the Dolphins did have the timeout it really wouldn't have changed the last drive any in turns of playcalling (IMHO). In fact, if the Dolpins would probably have used the TO if the sideline play (to Ronnie Brown) was called correctly. Therefore, it would have been a wash. Also, if you look at the defensive play-calling the Jets weren't in a traditional prevent during the entire fourth quarter (at least as far as the rush goes - it's difficult to see the coverage on TV). If you look at tape the Jets rushed five guys or more about 5-6 times and they rushed only three guys 1-2 guys. They did get pressure on Pennington numeous times (and sacked him at least twice).
I am happy we won the game but it does not excuse that kind of "playing not to lose" mentality. I am hoping it was just an isolated situation because Bret is not completely comfortable yet and they did not want to push things. That and they were more concerned about leaving Miami with another timeout in the event the pass went for an incompletion. I will hold judgment until we find out if this was just a coach protecting his new quarterback, or something that hampers them all season. Until then, it was a good win on the road, which is NEVER easy no matter who your opponent may be. Home openers for other teams are tough games to win and they did just that. Kudos to them and on to next week.
