they didn't have a choice in the matter, Geno was already gone even if they wanted to draft him with their first pick. remember, we had their first round pick, and their first pick was 4 spots after Geno was already gone. I'm not advocating that they did like Geno just that not drafting him doesn't inherently mean they did not think he was good or could be a good NFL QB, just that their immediate needs were better suited with a CB at that position.
I think its pretty clear that drafting a QB early in the first round is pretty much a crap shoot. Quite simply, there's virtually no way to tell with a college QB whether he'll be able to read NFL defenses quickly and effectively. What makes a QB a high first round pick are (i) impressive physical tools (great arm, scrambling ability, running ability, accuracy, etc.), (ii) a record of success in college, and (iii) playing in a pro style system. Geno rated very highly on (i), on (ii) he was effective in college but had a god awful defense that resulted in a fair number of losses and, with respect to (iii) he definitely did not come out of a pro style system (e.g., rarely took snaps under center, etc.). Last year, Geno should not have been a high first round selection and he belonged late in the first round, early in the second round, pretty much where the Jets drafted him. All rookie QBs are projects and because of the system Geno came out of he was more of a project than some other rookie QBs. That doesn't mean he won't be a good or great NFL QB, it just means that if he has it in him it'll take him a little longer to get there. Having MM as his coordinator and having a very good QB coach played a significant role in his development last year and I'm pretty hopeful for the future.
I think you are right and just reinforces the point that folks should just be happy we got the player where we did and not try to imagine we got anything more than what we did. A solid value high 2nd round pick, nothing more nothing less. _
Been in the car for about 4 hours today and pretty much everyone on ESPN and WFAN basically shot down Phil's opinion. Geno was a nice find. He's not anywhere near the top QBs this year. Neither he not Manuel are. _
This. Seems a bit silly because he's not going to convince Idzik one way or another, but maybe Phil thinks he can shape public opinion in the offseason to reduce pressure from fans and the media to bring in a veteran QB or another mid round rookie.
This would work if Geno worked out. If Geno proved unable to build upon the successes of last year you'd wind up with a QB unprepared to play the position as the only other option at some point. That's how you get the miserable season that gets Rex fired. I'd be looking to bring in a veteran BACKUP (not Vick, more like McCown) who could step in and play at an acceptable level if Geno broke down one way or another. I might also draft a mid-rounds developmental prospect.
geno needs to work a ton on his footwork and timing coming from under center. on top of that he needs to go through his progressions and learn how to recognize coverages and throw to the open spots. if he can get that down then he can have a solid second year. footwork is the most important though because without his timing the playbook cannot open up and defenses can key on the limited options
Yeah, coming from the type of offense he was running in college really didn't do him any favors with his footwork dropping back from under center. He needs to get that down ago that's it's second nature and he's not even thinking about it any longer. He also needs to learn how to read defense for adjustments to the blocking schemes (which he also has to understand so that it's second nature). Then on top of all that he needs to know the playbook and develope chemistry with his receivers so that they're both on the same page. All in all I hope he's been studying up and practicing!
Actually alot of teams were turned off by his interview. Why would that change if he was in this draft? If the bills took EJ over Geno, Then that's saying that EJ would go 1 and geno wold go 2 if this class is that bad. Last year was a meat and potato draft. The best value was undesired players by a fans perspective . Fans want playmakers in round 1 almost all the time....
no, because, one, the hypothetical only factors in Geno coming out this year, not EJ Manual as well. and two, Ej Manual was drafted ahead of Geno not because he was ahead of Geno on all teams boards but because he was ahead of it on the Bills board. Simm's comment wasn't solely about the Bills and Jets board but every other team as well, and although it is pure speculation on his part, there is no evidence that Manual was ahead of Geno on any other team's board except the Bills. whether the Bills would have ended up drafting him first is irrelevant to Simm's claims that, overall, Geno would have been the top QB in this class. that is an opinion about Geno's ability, and his college success, and has nothing to do with where he was eventually drafted.
