I heard that they were looking to replace him with Lane's father whose contract is up in Tampa. Whether he sucked or not is one thing, but I would bet that nepotism had more to do with him losing his job than anything. Seems all too convenient that dad's contract is up and now they fire Ryan.

I really don't understand all of the concern of tampering in this thread. If the Raiders made an issue of it the NFL would talk to Eric Mangini:
NFL: Eric, did you talk to Rob Ryan about a job before he was fired?
Mangini: Uh, no of course not

Then the NFL would talk to Rob Ryan:
NFL: Rob, did you talk to the Jets about becoming their defensive coordinator while you were still under contract with the Raiders?
Ryan: Uh, no of course not

Ryan then gets his defensive coordinator job and Mangini gets his man.

I hear about tampering every offseason, but how the hell are you going to prove it?

Yeah, a zone blitzing guy is forced to use a man react defense by Al Davis in order to defend against the deep pass, and the results are less than stellar.

    Shocking.

Unfortunately, you're not nearly intelligent enough to call anyone on this site a moron.

I don't think tampering charges have ever been enforced in the NFL, to the point of fines and draft picks. I'm sure Cakes or Br4dw4y5ux would know for sure if I'm wrong on this.

There is a first time for everything, but I think one of the parties involved would have to raise a serious stink to get it done, and I don't see the Raiduuuhs doing that. The closest I saw was when Parcells was calling assistants for the Jets and the Bears when he was 'mulling over' the Bucs job, and he quickly backed out when he found out that Tagliaboob was sticking his nose into it.

This story sounds more like Florio is annoyed that the Pats lost their draft pick and he's trying to create a story out of this situation.

Kinda tough to call tampering when you've already fired the guy

Nice, hire a guy before you let the previous guy go. I like the move btw.

I read some article blurb where it mentioned something like 'The Jets are expected to fire Sutton...', I'll see if I can find it.

    Edit: there's the thread:

All news whether its sports, politics has turned into total speclative BS,..Someone writes and never held accountable if their wrong..now talk about tampering..A load of garbage..Ryan is still the DC of the Raiders and Sutton DC of the Jets..I'm not saying it couldn't happen but reporters are saying it so and its not.

I don't think that it is that tampering is not enforced, it's more a matter of how are you going to prove it. I mean if you look at it you have a guy that wants a job, and a team that wants to give him a job, you know they are talking personally. So which one of those two parties is actually going to tell the NFL that they talked to the other? I mean they're both gonna benefit from keeping they're mouthes shut. And if they don't get a deal done between each other, they still want to keep they're mouthes shut so other people will talk to them. They don't want a reputation that will cause other people from talking to them.

Agree, I think that is basically the thing that prevents the league from taking tampering charges seriously most if not all of the time. When it's talking to one prospective coach, it's basically a private and difficult-to-prove communication between two interested parties.

I think the only reason the league got so far up Parcells' back about it was that he was making multiple calls to a large-ish number of under-contract staff members from different teams that could corroborate it, not just one guy.

This whole thread is about an invention of a story by a site that is known for inventing stories.

You said corroborate, you must either be a cop or a lawyer. Which is it? I know what that means, but I don't think the rest of the board does!

Hehe, I am neither a cop nor a lawyer, but I did stay in jail a few times. Corroborating is the confirmation of a story by parties privy to the facts. Please don't ask me to define privy, because I'll go with the toilet definition.

If Ryan can lure Nnamdi Asomugha, the CB from the Raiders here, we would have one fantastic secondary.
