My disagreement was that Brick wouldn't be a bad option. He's a horrible option imo. He was ranked in the bottom 5 OTs this past season. I think he was 3rd from the bottom. You're wrong about Fitz not being pressured and hurried, even if we didn't give up that many sacks. Look up the stats. Brick and Giacomini were the worst tackle tandem in the NFL. Yes, the money would help sign Fitz or someone else, but my point was that when Fitz is running for his life, it won't really help him or the team that he's only getting paid $5 million versus $14.1 million. The only saving grace is Gailey's system and that Fitz is mobile and got the ball out quickly or things would have been a lot worse. Unfortunately, we're probably stuck with Brick for this year, but maybe not. If we could get Stanley or Spriggs, I'd give them every shot to unseat Brick. They'd have to really struggle to be as bad as Brick was last season. Brick started as a rookie. Other guys do as well.
I saw the stats. I'm not living and dying by PFF stats. I don't think they were nearly that bad. I don't think they world beaters by any stretch, but I do not think Brick was a bottom 5 tackle in the NFL last year. Maybe bottom 5 for the money he was making. Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
How many times was Fitz running for his life? We had a quick passing offense, but we still were #2 for least sacks allowed in the league, and allowed the least sack yardage in the NFL. I don't remember too many times our offensive line looked bad in pass protection outside of the Houston game really, and most of that was Watt destroying Giacomini. You're reading too much into PFF statistics. Didn't we go the first couple games without allowing a sack? Think about when you watched the games. He wasn't dominant but he surely wasn't bad. If you wanna talk about quarterbacks running for their lives see Marcus Mariota all season long, Rodgers for that shitty stretch mid-season and Russell Wilson for the first 10 games of the year.
If I were GM, I would start by trying to get Brick to take a pay cut. If I succeed, Brick's base salary will end up close to Breno's. Then if I draft a tackle in Round 1 or 2, I cut Breno and consider shifting Brick to RT. In fact, cutting Breno saves us enough money to sign the rookie class.
I don't really like the idea of taking a career left tackle that's always been undersized (not only in size but strength) and flipping him to a position he's never played. The footwork is vastly different on either sides of the line, including finite details like which hand you put down in a 3-point stance. The only way guys can flip over without much of an issue is if they possess elite strength. He was a 4 year starter at left tackle at Virginia. He's virtually never played right tackle, and has never missed an NFL game at left tackle. You're playing with fire to try to change his position. The only place I could see him move to is left guard and in that instance he would need to be in a Kubiak/Shanahan-esque zone blocking scheme where undersized guards thrive with speed and quickness. He'll retire a left tackle.
It isn't just about sacks. They didn't give up many sacks, but look at the number of hurries and pressures. Those numbers aren't made up. I may not have seen all the games, but int he games I saw, I saw how bad Brick and Giacomini were.
We are gonna have to cross that bridge soon anyway,if Brick plays like shit this season he's likely gone next year anyway
I don't think Brick has been nearly as bad as the mob on here would indicate. Cutting him would create a gaping hole at LT.
Oh, most def. I certainly did love hearing that the Jets moved up some spaces to pick; "Busted MF'er (insert name here) (dire position of need) from the University of (that place never produces anything at that position)". Of course we always have the draft analyst there to tell us that he's "promising" and while you didn't get to see in stats, or the gameplay, or in the pro day/combine. This guy has that something special to make him into a good pro. I've decided this was just code for "sorry Jets fans, your front office has screwed the pooch again".
During that period was decent with Colon having a resurgent season with one penalty up to that point with some really stout play at guard.
I bet they'd get better production from Qvale than Breno and given the cap situation and that he's been around a couple years and the coaching staff is apparently high on him, I might take that chance to save over 4M
