Fitz ain't no prize but he's a starting caliber NFL QB, which the Jets had been lacking since Favre. If we know we have his replacement then let him walk, but we don't. PFFt
Boy this is a whiff by PFF. Why bother witha Matt Moore or Tavarious Jackson? If the Jets say goodbye to Fitz they may as well save the money for a new QB and just go with Geno again. Are Moore's/Jackson sabremetrics better than Smith? Either way they would be taking a step (s) backwards by moving on from Fitzpatrick.
I understand, but many of the observations they make there are no 'stats' for. And as we all know, stats are no substitute for sitting and watching a player play. I'll take HomeOfTheJets opinion about a player who you've actually watched over 10 pages of stats any day.
Yes let's not resign the QB who broke the Jets TD passes record and gave us a top 10 offense for the first time in almost a decade.Brilliant idea ,Maybe he won't be as good as he was last year that doesn't mean we don't resign him.I think he will throw 35 tds next season and break his own record
Wasn't this something when we had Sanchez. He lead in the league in dropped interceptions or something ridiculous like that
I'm a big fan of PFF but they aren't always right. Fitz should be resigned, but only at a fair price on a short term deal.
It is such a fake stat. And what it doesn't do is (i) deduct for INTs that were not the QBs fault--perfectly thrown balls that bounce off receivers hands and (ii) dropped TDs (Fitz had at least 4 I remember--if we're counting dropped INTs than lets give him credit for at LEAST 35 TD passes). _
PFF also forgets that none of his picks except the killer end zone pick against Buffalo were bad picks. None in either red zone, no pick sixes, and a lot of them were desperation throws on the final drive.
IMO PFF underrates Fitz for two reasons. 1. Their grades are subjective, meaning the graders take aesthetics into account even unintentionally. And Fitz doesn't look pretty. He runs around, throws with a low arm slot, and his passes wobble. 2. By their own admission, they don't consider pre snap reads, which is arguably Fitz's biggest strength. So when he throws a short pass to a wide open receiver who picks up yards ATC, they don't give him a positive grade. But not many QBs would have recognized the situation before the snap and therefore would not have gotten the ball out quickly enough.
PFF is such a joke. They gave Rodgers a -0.8 grade when he threw for 333 passing yards, five touchdown passes, no interceptions against the Chiefs last season.
Only way I could see getting rid of Fitz for cap space was if the Jets coaches KNEW Petty was ready to start. Or if there was a QB in the 2017 draft worth tanking for like Luck.
PFF doesn't measure leadership, on and off the field. I agree with them that Fitzpatrick's QB abilities warrant the Jets looking elsewhere for a solution if they can find one, however he's also the leader of the team and given the Jets track record of poor leadership from QB's in the post 2010 era that has to be the most important criteria in terms of who will lead them in 2016. Re-signing Fitzpatrick gives the Jets a year to find the long term solution, whether it is already on the roster or is going to be acquired in 2016 or 2017. The year won't be the best year the Jets could possibly have but it is very likely to be a stable year in which the team keeps things together and progresses in the struggle towards a Super Bowl. If the Jets are going to move on then they either need to have a better veteran option for next year and it's unclear such exists at this point or they need to have made the determination that a young guy, either in the organization or outside is ready to go and commit to them. Bringing in a Matt Moore or Josh McCown type QB would be penny wise and pound foolish. The guy would be half the price of Fitzpatrick for the year but would have to build all the leadership qualities with this group of players that Fitzpatrick already has achieved. The OL does need a bit of a revamp for next season though, whether Fitzpatrick is re-signed or not. They've got to get a real backup at C in case Mangold goes down, probably a mid-round draftee that they can intensively prep during the pre-season for that eventuality, this assuming that they don't think Dozier is ready to start at C if Mangold goes down. They've got to address the OT's in some way, D'Brick from a cap perspective and Giacomini from a talent perspective. They've got to figure out if Winters can hold down RG all year or if they have to replace him. If they're in replacement mode on Winters they need to figure out if he's quick enough to handle C as the backup. Then they've got to get whoever is going to backup C schooled on all the line calls so a Mangold injury doesn't turn into "who, what, where?" and a heavy reliance on just running the ball because blitzers are living in the backfield on passing downs.
I'm always worried about Fitz getting hurt (given his propensity for playing fearlessly), but Tavaris Jackson? Holy fuck.
PFF loses credibility every time I see one of their articles. Yeah, don't sign the guy that set the record for all time TDs on the Jets or even think about keeping him around to mentor the young guys. Just get rid of one the best Jets QBs, and turn the most important position on the team into a question mark. That's how winning teams get better, right? Don't get me wrong, stopping the run is important, but the QB is MORE important by a lot, especially if it only means a slightly less productive dline at stopping the run. They will still be very good.
Agreed. If they don't bring Fitz back, the season would be lost anyway if they don't think that Petty's the answer at QB anyway, so why spend the money on a QB you know is awful, when you have an awful one here already? In that scenario, it would make more sense to just let Geno play out his contract. If he played pretty well, then the Jets could possibly get a comp pick in return for him and they'd have a decent record. And they could use the money they have spent on Fitz, Moore, or Jackson to shore up another hole or holes on the team. If he was awful, the Jets would have an awful record and it would put them in great position to draft a QB they liked in the 2017 draft.
