Good protection has escaped New York Jets quarterbacks since 2010. It's better to have a mobile quarterback than a glass leg statue.

Also, Andre Johnson average? Arian foster average? Stevie Johnson circa 2012, 2011 average? Cj spiller average circa 2012? Fitz has been around a lot more talent and done nothing. He suck

Geno is going to be starting this season and definitely making some mistakes. Get ready bud. Hopefully throwing some Tds and leading a post season run. Fitz will be holding a clipboard, the league is too fast for his old ass.

    Sweet dreams ;)

I feel like the blitz stat is mostly explained by the fact that he rolls out when he's blitzed and forces defenses into mostly 1 on 1 situations, which just further emphasizes what his main problem is: the mental aspect of the position. Everybody knows that Geno has the arm and athleticism needed to be a good QB, look at his college stats. Bottom line is he doesn't have the mental acuity, and never will. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm fairly confident that I'm not.

Even if Geno plays OK and 'wins' the starting job, you just know there's gonna be a 3-4 game stretch where Geno struggles. How long before the fans start calling for Fitz, and how long before Bowles makes the switch? 2 bad games? 3? 4? My guess is Geno will get the hook part way through his 3rd consecutive bad game. Probably at half time.

What makes you think Bowles will make football decisions based on the whims of fans and media? Hopefully he'll make football decisions for football reasons, but I guess we'll find out.

The problem with the fanbase is their ability to know the difference between ... What every QB goes through(literally every QB goes through bad stretch I.E Drew brees) and The true showing of a truly bad QB. And will always call for the QB's head

yes those are average groups of players around fitz. and the one group last year was probably better then average, and hey, look at this fitz numbers were better then average. fitz might suck, but i dont care if he always produces like an average or better QB.

Geno has done nothing but suck. bad cast around him, but he has still sucked.

i see no reason to have faith in geno just because they players around him suck as bad as he does.

Being a Jets fan has taught me to have a low expectation when it goes to QBs. But, just how bad is a a bad Fitzpatrick?

Based on his career numbers, not bad at all. Compare him to our QB numbers over the same period, especially 2008- 12. He just didn't win enough. Too many INTs running Chan's offense?

They were two separate questions. Fans. Bowles.

Wow, so winning EIGHT games in his first season equals "Geno has done nothing but suck"?

He saved a coach's job for heavens sake.

Last year was a disappointment. But he certainly wasn't the only suck job on that team.

But don't have faith. See the results of the roster upgrades and two years under his belt in the NFL and judge for yourself!!

This is an awesome, well done article by Brian Bassett. The further I dig the more I'm changing my mind from Geno to Fitzpatrick. It's not because I'm liking Geno any less, but I'm starting to think that Fitz is a really solid option at quarterback. I suggest you give it a read: http://thejetsblog.com/nyjets/geno-vs-fitzy-a-tale-of-two-quarterbacks/

Of course Fitz fits the bill. Macagnan isnt stupid. For anyone who thinks the aquisition for RF was not thought out or desperate is an idiot.

This offense may be more tailored to Fitzpatrick than Geno lol

You changed your mind? Welcome to the smart side of the arguement.

Also important considerations are that Fitz has a broken leg and is likely to miss virtually all of the pre-season no matter what the coaches decide, and Fitzpatrick is 8 years older then Geno (32 as opposed to 24). The whole qb discussion would be very different in my mind if Fitz was healthy and younger. When will his leg heal to a sufficient degree to run and get into football shape? How long will it take his leg to fully heal so he can take shots on it from 300+lb D-linemen? Will he make 100% recovery? I'm glad the Jets picked him up because our QB depth is so terrible and Geno is such a question mark, but Fitz is a question mark as well for different reasons.

Thank You! Let's not waste time talking about an open competition when Fitz still has a broken leg and the timetable for his return is uncertain. The way I see it Geno is going to get all the 1st team reps while Fitz is on the mend preseason, and he is going to have a few games to show what he can do. If he shits the bed, they will pull him and that will be the end of Geno, and we'll see what Fitz can do. If he craps out we can start looking towards Petty and a high draft pick next year to draft another QB.

Yes. Much in the same way that Sanchez went to back-to-back AFC title games and sucked on rocks (worst starting QB in the league both seasons). It's a team sport. Sometimes a team wins despite its QB.

yeah, and when it does it's easily documented how the team won despite its offensive leader.

Perhaps you can show us how the Jets won those games without Smith's contributions.

and then, when you can't, you can file this preposterous argument in the crapper where it belongs.

    Week 1, vs Tampa.
    Week 7, vs New England

Just two low-hanging fruits. Jets should have been 6-10 at minimum, if not worse.
