So what you are telling me is Nelson is more reliable and should be on the field more then Stephen Hill because he actually catches passes? Stephen Hill never gets open, he gets physically dominated at every opportunity. The physical gifts he was given, he doesn't take advantage of at all in regards to the football field.

I don't care about what year Nelson is in vs Stephen Hill. Hill has done more harm then good and has disappeared for games on games.

Guy with the higher ceiling that didn't really improve, disappears in stretches and rarely can use his physical talents to beat a CB or a reliable receiver that is physical that can get open and catch?

I'll take the guy that can catch. I'll take the poor man's Eric Decker over the poor man's Troy Williamson.

Nelson only had 2 TDs and only had 9 receptions in the Redzone all season. How does that make him a "good" red zone threat?

Keep those assumptions to yourself please. Stephen Hill should at least be able to catch a freaking football once a game, is that hard to ask? Geno Smith was one of the better deep ball throwers in the league, yet for some reason Stephen Hill wasn't involved in that regard.

Quick falling in love with potential and look at other factors. He doesn't even help the team, if he did I would recommend him learning STs ASAP

So you're saying there should be no consideration to the fact that Hill is only 22 years old, isn't fully developed physically and has only played 23 games as a pro. 11 of them with Mark Sanchez ( worst QB ever if you ask most here ), and the other half with a Rookie Geno Smith, With no real #1 to draw coverage away from him? Being forced into a starter role that EVERYONE knows he's not ready for. Despite all this you're ready to throw him away because he's not megatron in his second year?

Your expectations of him as a player were WAYYYY off base if this is the case.

Why have 2 players of the same mold on the field at the same time? Decker is clearly better then Nelson will ever be, And has 0 chance to be a legit threat of a WR. The longest catch he's ever had was 37 yards in his rookie season.

We know what Nelson's ceiling is, and it's not that great. He's a big possesion WR that has a good rapport with Geno.

Stephen Hill is in no way a better WR then Nelson right now, But has potential to be 10x's better then Nelson will ever be. Based on that alone, he's worth a roster spot over Nelson 10/10 times.

Watch the games, Nelson did not play that much, because the coaching staff still was trying to play Holmes and Hill as much as possible. As the offense came together somewhat towards the end of the season, Hill was injured and Nelson caught a couple TDs. He also more reliable on 3rd downs, not necessarily burning the field up but using his body to make catches and move the chains. It's not all about numbers, it's about situational football.

You're right in one sense, but you're not thinking big picture. Decker is our current #1 receiver, and he is a big bodied guy who has similar attributes to Nelson but better overall athleticism and production. If we have a proven possession guy under contract for cheap, there's no reason to get rid of him. Kerley is our # 2, and will play on the outside most 2WR sets despite his size. Kerley is better suited for the slot, so we then have 2 guys in line to come and play outside; Nelson and Hill. If you have the option to put in a good blocker with reliable hands and good yardage awareness, or a guy who is never open and can only run a deep route successfully, who are you going to put in? Sure there are times you want to put in your burner and either have him go deep or just threaten to go deep, but when you're a 1 trick pony you're lower on the depth chart.

Hill was showing signs of catching the ball last year until he disappeared.

Besides, if Decker gets hurt, Nelson will basically come in and play a similar position. If we trade for DJax, we will definitely want Nelson on the roster for his size. If we have DJax and Kerley but Decker is hurt, we'll want Nelson to play outside. If Hill develops through the offseason and the season, great, but he has shown very little in terms of development since being drafted so I'm not counting on him.

I definitely watch every Jet game at least once. The only player that stood out to me last year on third down was Kerley. Nelson only had 5 more first down catches then Hill, Kerley on the other hand had 30 first downs and is proof for what a real possesion WR with quickness can do.

Nelson to me is an in between not having the speed to be a burner or the quickness to be an out an out possession slot guy. He filled a need last year that no longer exists on the team ( Since we have Decker ). We don't have another WR in the mold of Hill, and unless we pick one up his spot on the roster is 10x more valuable then Nelson's.

Nelson has 12 catches after Hill was put on the IR. Both of his TD catches were against Cleveland and were solid throws from Geno. As for playing time breakdown I was actually kind of surprised to see him and Hill at the top.

    http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york-jets/post/_/id/34281/final-playing-time-breakdown-wr
"Nelson, picked up off the street in Week 5, saved the unit from falling into total disarray. He led the group in playing time over the second half of the season."

This is a silly generalization, There are plenty of times Hill got separation and was never looked at, For whatever reason it just never seemed like He and Geno were on the same page.
Everyone should read this article before continuing in this thread.

First of all give Nelson a little time to integrate into the offense, when you come in at week 5 you aren't going to contribute a lot immediately. Watch the games again, you'll see Nelson's 1st down catches were often on key 3rd down conversions that helped save drives. Yes, Kerley is a better WR, no one is arguing that. Maybe if you watch the games again you'll see the numerous times Nelson was open for a catch and Geno misses him by yards. If I thought Nelson was good enough to be a starter, I wouldn't have made numerous posts about finding WR help in FA or the draft, but this was supposed to be a simple argument about who is better between Hill or Nelson.

Not who is better, I won't argue that Hill is a better WR then Nelson at this point in his career, That would be silly. This is about who has more potential, of which I believe Hill has much more then Nelson.

I love Jeremy Kerley he's the kind of receiver every team needs. He may not be flashy, but he's tough and he's reliable. IMO he's the best receiver on the team.

Nelson has more potential. Hill literally has had 2 or 3 good games in 2 seasons. Nelson is much more polished he runs clean and crisp routes, he knows how to use his height and size to his advantage and he attacks the ball with his hands and he fights for badly thrown balls.

Hill only just knows how to run up the field, he is athletic as hell and has good size but he plays as if he's 5'7. He catches the ball against his body which makes it easier for DB's to guard him. He doesn't fight for the ball when they're poorly thrown. I don't think he'll ever be the receiver they thought they were getting. But he can develop into a solid 3/4 receiver.

Of course Hill has more potential, but if production is worth more than potential. Especially when you have two seasons worth of tape indicating Hill will not even come close to living up to that potential.

Big fan of Kerley. Decker, a burner an Kerley could do serious damage.

Anyone think that hit from Polamalu messed him up a bit? Feels like that's when his production died.

But back to Kerley, he was a big part of Geno's big games. I hope he does well with the attention going to decker and possibly D-jax

How many "good" games does Nelson have, Over his 5 year career? In his career Nelson has never eclipsed 86 yds in any one game, Hill has done this 3 times in 2 years, despite being injured and having inconsistent QB play at best.

Again, after 5 years in the league, and coming out of a Urban Mayer coached program AND being redshirted. I would sure hope he is polished, Otherwise he'd be home watching the games from a couch.

This is just false, If you looked into the article I just posted it shows him running a number of different routes successfully including 2 comebacks that Geno way over threw him and/or mistimed the throw.

The other article I posted showed how he has been improving in high pointing the ball, He still does catch the ball against his body but he can work on that in time.

I don't understand how people here are claiming Nelson to be the epitome of production bashing hill when their stat lines are not all that far off.

    24 rec 342 yds 1TD
    vs
    36 rec 423 yds 2TD

Again, If it's 6 to a half dozen, I take Hill everytime for his higher ceiling if he ever figures it out. IMO - If you have 2 WRs that both put up this similar of a stat line you take the younger, more athletic one with potential over the stop gap possession guy we got for cheap.

Absolutely not saying we should get rid of Nelson for no reason, Just that if it came down to it, And we only had a roster spot for one of them? I choose Hill.

Nelson has always been a slot guy and based on using my eyes Nelson uses his body better. Not saying Nelson is great but Hill was brought in to be the number 2 receiver and eventually transition to the number 1 role. Nelson was always used as a 3/4 receiver. Hill has been given far more opportunities than Nelson. I wonder if only we had a Nelson as our number 2 receiver in '12 we'd been better off.

This is nonsense. if Nelson was drafted by the Jets 90% of you would be asking for him to be cut and quartered after his first 2 years.

I dont understand how people can't grasp the concept of a raw project player. Hill was drafted as a project, not a #2. If things went the right way, Hill should never have played in 2012 and sat the bench to learn.
As it was he was forced into a role by injury and poor roster management. 13' would have been his firs real action and people would be excited about his potential this coming year rather then calling him a bust and asking for his head.
