Pete Schrager's Mock Draft

Discussion in 'Draft' started by BrowningNagle, Mar 3, 2014.

  1. I said in another thread that I thought OL was a possibility at #18 for a number of reasons.

    1. Geno was at his best when he had a clean windshield to step up into. Yes weapons are extremely important..but they are meaningless if you can't keep your QB upright.

    2. I read somewhere that Marty slowly wants to convert the OL scheme to be more zone oriented this coming season. Zone scheme typically means better athletes which you usually have to pick early

    3. Idzik seems to be a "build from the inside out" type of guy. I have a feeling that OG spot is alot higher priority than people think

    4. Rex also believes in winning in the trenches first. If he isn't gonna get a defender with a #1 pick..I can totally see him advocating for OL over a wide out.

Xavier Su’a-Filo is a really good player. Make no mistake about that. He's a legit day 1 talent. He's extremely athletic, has long arms & can play both guard/tackle. I think he's better than both Yankey & Jackson. Those of you poo-pooing this selection need to accept it as a legit possibility

we do need a guard but I feel like none of them are first round picks.

I agree he's a really good player, but he's not an elite player like Jonathan Cooper. I project Su’a-Filo being a late Rd 1 selection, I just don't see the value as the 18th pick in the draft. I think if the Jets go OL in Rd 1 it will Lewan or Martin.

The guy IS an Idiot, he claims this guy is the 2nd best guard in the draft behind David Yankey yet he has this guy drafted ahead of him...Idiot. That's not even talking about the actual reach of a pick this would be.

He is a better guard than Yankey. Probably not the best value at 18 though- as a trade back option I would be okay with it, but not thrilled.

It may be a legit possibility, but as I said earlier, if Idzik takes Sua-Filo at #18, I want him fired before the draft is over. I will lose all respect for him and hopes for the Jets while he is the GM.

Well I and many others were kinda iffy with how Richardson would be utilized at the time but now we knew Coples would transition himself to being a 3-4 OLB. That was the only way at the time to even justify the pick.

I've never seen either of them play I'm just going by what I read, and to this date most if not all of the mocks I have seen have Yankey as #1 & this guy as #2.

Unexpected picks are fine. Colossal reaches for players is not, nor is wasting 1st round picks on prospects who don't play premium positions. This team needs playmakers on BOTH offense and defense. OG grunts are important, but nowhere near as important as WR, TE, OLB, CB, S and/or OT. Idzik should have plenty of options at his disposal at pick #18, including the possibility of trading down. For Sua-Filo to be an acceptable pick at #18, imo he'd not only have to be a perennial All Pro (not just Pro Bowl), but a HOF level player. OGs, no matter how good, can't take over a game or win a game single-handedly. Playmakers can. I'd rather a GM not "reach" for a player at all, but if a GM is going to reach for a player, I'd much rather him reach and miss on a playmaker (QB, WR, TE, OLB, CB, FS or even an NT or OT, than an OG, C or DT. IMO reaching for an OG and missing is an unforgiveable offense. No offense to Rockinz meant, but it's akin to going with a boom or bust prospect at your first round pick when your team is full of holes and has little depth.

With Austin Howard testing free agency we might very well need our 1st round pick to be on the o-line. Bpa available of course but an ot at 18 is a little easier to swallow than an og.
