Agreed. I thought that tendering him last off season was a smart move, but in hindsight it has left him with all the leverage now. Maybe the strong draft class tempers his market a bit but I'm not banking on it.
It will and it won't. It depends on the team. The Eagles and Colts have both tried the second round + mid round receiver thing and it hasn't worked out very well. The Raiders will be in on receivers this year because they haven't done so. Those are our three biggest competitors for him IMO. And I see the Eagles going all out for him. He's perfect for Wentz.
Anderson doesn't have the Jets by the balls at all. That's old school thinking that gets teams in trouble. The truth is Vyncent Smith isn't even much of a downgrade from Anderson. If someone gives Anderson a big offer, you walk away and wish him well, its an easy decision, and your balls are safe. Teams let complementary players walk all the time in the NFL and sometimes they are even better for it. The NFL is just starting to get into "wins above replacement" thinking. In baseball its a big thing. In the NFL, Anderson wouldn't even register with 1 win above replacement. The Jets were 7-9 last year with Anderson, they woulda been 7-9 without him. They will be 7-9 or 8-8 or 9-7 or 6-10 with or without Anderson, Vyncent Smith can do his job, or Sammy Watkins or a 4th round rookie, whatever. --- The only players that can hold a franchise by the balls are the cornerstone players. Those with a high impact on the locker room as a winner or those with a high impact on the field as an amazing talent: Darrelle Revis in his prime with his amazing talent; Hightower in NE for his leadership and what he means to that locker room. Neither applies to Robby Anderson
Stop it. He's the fifth NFL player since 1970 to reach 3,000 receiving yards in his first four seasons after entering the league as an undrafted player. Anderson was making plays when he came into the league. This is delusional Nagle.
He's more limited than some elite receiver, but he should be given more credit than being Vycint Smith. He's not good at coming back to the ball at all on any sort of stops or anything like that. He gets ragdolled really easily and he runs shitty routes at times by rounding them off. But he can make plays down the field. He has elite speed. And he's the best option we have beyond being forced to take a first round receiver. Anderson + a true X receiver will be a lot better than he is now. An X receiver that lines up on the LOS, can be singled out away from any sort of bunch or stacked receiver set and run a slant for a first down by boxing out the defender. Brandon Marshall type. It'll unlock a better Robbie Anderson. Front load a deal for him. Make him cuttable in two years and replace him then.
Yeah it is man, you cannot expect Smith to come in here and replace Robby's production and / or deep play threat. That's how you get regression in the offense. Stop being cheap on the offensive side of the ball. Heck, seeing a Jeudy / Anderson pairing would be insane on the offensive side of the ball. Jets need him back.
This team will fare better if we retain our own players in our own system. It's the whole new customers cost 10x more sort of deal. With the reduction in training camp time and player-organizational contact over the course of an off-season, it's becoming a lot more difficult to bring mercenaries in and expect great results. Especially at a position that relies on chemistry as much as any. Figuring out how fast a receiver is and where they're going to be on what routes is so important. That's why receivers can tend to struggle early in their career. I'm not a big Anderson guy. But I really don't want to 2012 Sanchez this guy.
Again, Anderson is so good but the Jets still need to draft Jerry Jeudy. What?? Listen to yourselves - pay Anderson $14 million on top of Jamison Crowder's $10 million and the Jets still need to draft a wideout in the top of the draft. If Anderson was good enough for that contract, Jeudy wouldn't be a need Let Anderson walk, draft a lineman (preferably Mekhi Becton), save Anderson's money to sign more linemen. Get your WR in the mid rounds, make a modest WR signing and roll with that. You won't even miss Anderson a bit
Anderson will continue to make Darnold a better QB with the deep ball as well, 2 years worth of chemistry you cannot afford to throw that away. If we retain Anderson and get him some better protection via FA, it creates all sorts of flexibility in the draft to make this team better. Best case is we address Anderson, and perhaps two lineman.
his being an undrafted player does not impact th esignificance of his numbers in any way. Put his numbers up against every receiver over the last 4 years to get his true value
Chiefs pay Sammy Watkins a shit ton to make 5 or so plays the entire year. They extended Hill and drafted Hardman, how is that any different? Gotta have multiple options on the field that can make plays. Robby ain't getting 14M a year. Even so you frontload the contract, there are creative ways to get it done other then saying 14m a year. Btw Jeudy is an option, that's the beauty of having flexibility in the draft. 2 or 3 years you can move on from Robby and draft his replacement, but we need the chemistry and play making now while the QB is in development.
The Chiefs extended Hill to relieve cap pressure, not add to it. Hill made $2 million this year. His salary bumps over $15 mill next year and at that point they will have to say goodbye to Sammy Watkins. If Anderson wants to play for $2 million, hell yea keep him, but of course he doesn't.
Currently, Jets do not have cap issues. The point is still to gather as many weapons as possible, not to let them go. We need to stack weapons, we do not have the luxury to let Anderson go. Watkins might be staying BTW as he might take a paycut. Jets will figure it out later.
the Jets absolutely have the luxury to let Anderson go. Thank goodness you don't work in the front office, Anderson's agent would fleece us with that kind of desperation
No, they don't have the luxury when a QB is on the cusp of being either really good or really bad. Who's to say I would get fleeced? I don't have a 1 track mindset that says I will give Robby "14M a year", there are multiple ways to pay a player and at the same time provide cap flexibility to sign other players. It's never about APY, it's about guaranteed cash, so you find a way to make it work. Surely, you would make this franchise an attractive destination. Saying VS would replace RA, you would have your walking papers delivered.
In what way does a team with 2 competent WRs have the luxury of letting one of them go? I'm not saying give Robby whatever he wants but acting like it's no biggie if he walks is a bad take.
