2nd Half 3rd and 3 ( ball on NYJ 38) - Shotgun 3 WR, Cotchery motions out of the backfield right, Pennington with 3 step drop, looks at Cotchery underneath on 5 yard in, throw over the top to a 12 yard hitch route to Coles. Incomplete. Offsides. Time to Pass: 2.06 seconds: Grade: C; Pennington spotted the intermediate route and throw the ball high and behind Coles slightly. A very catchable pass, but also if tipped, could have been intercepted. 3rd and Goal ( ball on MIA 3) - Shotgun 3 WR. Pennington drops back, and stares down Baker, who runs a corner route into the back of the endzone. Lofts the ball high and to the corner, but is well over the head of Baker. Incomplete. Time to pass: 2.44 seconds: Grade: C-; Pennington made it fairly easy for the Dolphins safeties to recognize where he was going to pass. A simple look off could have bought a few extra feet allowing Pennington to make a more catchable pass, but instead it was high and out of the endzone. Jets settle for a field goal. 2nd and 12 ( ball on 24) - 4 WR Shotgun set, Kowalewski motions tight. Pennington looks right to Cotchery on a post route, then comes back underneath to Coles on a 5 yard out give route. Incomplete Time to pass: 2.86 seconds: Grade: C-; A fairly easy pass, Coles had separation but Pennington just missed him. It appeared that Coles was held up a bit, but replay shows that he wasn't. The ball was just high and out of reach. 3rd and 17 ( ball on NYJ 19) - 4 WR Shotgun set, Pennington looks middle, but is flushed out left to and scrambles to buy time. Hits Coles streaking across the field. Gain of 22 yards Time to pass: 4.98 seconds: Grade A; Pennington first looked off Cotchery who was running a 10 yard post route, and was flushed out left as he saw Coles running his deep drag from the far side of the field. Pennington on the run hit Coles directly in stride allowing him to cross the marker and move the chains. 3rd and 1 ( ball on 50) - 2 WR Strong I set, Kowaleski motions tight. Pennington play fakes and rolls right, hits Jones in stride in the flat right past the marker. Gain of 2 yards. Time to pass: 2.02 seconds: Grade:B+; A great play designed to get the yardage for the 1st, a fairly week play fake, but a quick roll out right allows Pennington to hit Jones from the right angle, squeezing the pass in a fairly tight window with Jason Taylor on Jones' heels. 2nd and 5 ( ball on MIA 43) - 3 WR Singleback set. Pennington with a 5 step drop, looks left for slot receiver Smith on an out route, but is pressured and misfires. Incomplete. Time to pass: 1.88 seconds: Grade: C; While Pennington did throw it out of reach, he threw it where it couldn;t be intercepted, a veteran move by someone who was being pressured up the middle. Pass was low and towards the sideline, 3 feet away from Smith's hands. 3rd and 5 ( ball on MIA 43) - 4 WR Shotgun set, trips left, McCareins motioned left. Pennington looks McCareins working the middle of the field, and spots Cotchery on an out towards the sideline. Complete to Cotchery. Gain of 8 yards. Time to pass: 2.81 seconds. Grade A-; Another first down conversion for Pennington who found an open man able to create enough space to run for the 1st down. Ball thrown in stride to the outside shoulder, and Cotchery picks up additional 4 yards. 3rd and Goal ( ball on MIA 3) - 4 WR Shotgun set. Pennington takes a 3 step drop, and sees a large hole in the middle of the field, runs to the endzone. Gain of 3. Touchdown! Time to pass: N/A: Grade: A; I know this wasn't a pass but I couldn't resist. Normally a designed running play would have a step drop in the blueprints, but you never know. I doubt given Chad's ankle, he would have called this play. More likely was impromptu and great recognition of an opening in the middle, as Chad hesitated briefly before streaking towards the endzone for 6. 1st and 10 ( ball on NYJ 30) - 4 WR, trips tight right. McCareins motions wide right. Pennington with 5 step drop, and quickly spots an open McCariens on his in cut of a 10 yard hitch. Gain of 11 yards. Time to pass: 2.02 seconds: Grade: A-; Quick recognition of the open receiver, delivered pass with good velocity to the outside shoulder, which was away from the defender. Quick move of the chains. 3rd and 9 ( ball on MIA 44) - 4 WR Shotgun set. Cotchery motions right ( trips), Pennington with a 3 step drop and quickly spots Smith on a 8 yard hitch and throws ball low and outside. Gain of 6 yards. Time to pass: 1.95 seconds: Grade C-; Pennington made the crowd quiet with his pass short of the first down. The pass lacked velocity needed to give Smith any type of running run, or chance to gain yards after the catch for a 1st down. Moderate pressure, but still had enough time to find a more suitable option downfield. End Game. Average time to pass - 2.67 seconds ( excluding SPIKE) Grade: B+; Pennington clearly had a good game, and he is responsible for 24 of the Jets 31 points. However his production dipped slightly in the 2nd half and clearly his stats are anything but gaudy. He showed great field awareness for most parts of the game, except for a few bad passes at the beginning of the game. His QB scramble and the 2 roll outs that he did show that his ankle is able to withstand some movement, and he looks as mobile as he has ever been. Arm strength looked normal, nothing spectacular, but his touch was phenomenal. Both TD passes couldn't have been thrown any better and he made quite a few passes right on the money, allowing his receiver to run after the catch. A performance definitely to build on.
Wait a second... is someone trying to say Penny threw the ball further than 5 yards and hit his receivers in stride at times?
Very good work, but after re-watching the game on TiVo, I think you should lower his grades on a bunch of the out patterns and hooks/curls..... You give him grades ranging from B's and up on these 4-10 yard patterns... But what I noticed watching the game again is that, A) He looked down to these often when he had one-on-one matchups furhter down field..... B) Except for one or two occasions, on those throws the ball didn't get there quickly enough or with enough velocity for the WR to make plays after the catch.... That's why a lot of those are 4-10 yards, instead of 8-20 yards, like how those patterns work with a lot of other teams... That's my opinion though... Good work overall..
I thought i might have missed it. this was way too thorough for it to be a one shot deal. thanks for the clarification.
I believe BradwaySucks did the Clemens breakdown... Again, this analysis was awesome... I think Chad played very well, I just wish he'd take more chances down the field. Looking at our defense though, a slow dink-and-dunk offense that keeps our defense off the field might be the best approach.
I agree, we havent seen Chad take any chances downfield, I would personally love to see him go for the HR ball.... begin rant. its gets old after a while knowing we are going to knit pick our way to the Red-Zone....gimme a damn 50 yard bomb every once in a while....just to keep the defense honest... end rant. being real though, Chad has done a good job. I hope he continues his success this week, but with a little more excitement!
I agree, it is fun to see them try the 1st & 10 home run bomb. Every now and then you can catch a defense napping on the first snap of the game. A good start to a game b*tch slapping them from the go. This whole argument though about throwing deep is the same as people complaining that Curtis Martin was not exciting because he rarely ripped off a long run late in his career. If you can keep the chains moving and get in position and score that is all that counts.
The 3rd and 17 (I thought it was 16) roll left was a great throw, pretty much right in front of me. He can throw better than people think and his touch is amazing. We haven't really had a problem with guys dropping balls since Chad's been the QB, that's not a coincidence.
Great point! And while its true that most people on here want to see more deep passes from Chad, I would rather win boring then to lose exciting...
