Haha, between 07/25 & 07/26, I got no less that 7 emails and 4 voicemails from friends and my favorite cousin about Favre and the Jets. Speaking of Favre vs. Pennington, from my rabid Jets fan friend, Vinnie... "I will personally pick up Chad and his family and drop them off in Minnesota on my way to Green Bay to pick up Favre to bring him to practice. Improved OL, better running game, all we would need is a deep threat due to the fact that we would have the ability to actually get the ball deep, what a concept. Maybe this year we can get past Yom Kippur, another interesting concept." He always says that. "Yom Kippur, and the season is already over..."
Cutler is a top 10 QB? OK, if you say so. Ryan Leaf had "stud potential" too, that's why he went #2 in the draft. So did Akili Smith, so did Andre Ware. Most the guys you mentioned were in the same draft, so again it's not like we let a franchise guy slip by every year at the top of the draft. The only one of those three I wanted was Young and he was gone before we drafted. The Jets at that point badly needed to rebuild the O-line so they took Brick, who has started every game at LT since, while Leinart hasn't done anything and Cutler stepped into a 7-4 Denver team and promptly took them out of playoff contention. Quinn might already be expendable in Cleveland. Point being, we haven't passed on any Manning/Aikman/Elway type franchise QBs at the top of the draft, ever. Also, I don't see how the Jets are handling Clemens poorly. They drafted him rather high, gave him a chance to compete for the job in his rookie camp, then he sat and learned on a playoff team, then he got half a season of garbage time to get his feet wet with no pressure, now he has another camp with a golden opportunity to be the starter in year three. All in the same offense. If he can't do it now it's nobody's fault but his own.
DITTO! I absolutely agree with your opinion. Why is it that CHADWICK's fans hate4 every other JET QB? Some undoubtedly will be calling for RATTY. When he gets his shot and throws an INt they will jump on him as they did with CLEMENS and yell for Ainge. They are never happy! Only CHADWICK will ever do for them.
Sorry if this was posted above, but thought this was relevant: http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/24/would-pennington-have-done-better-than-favre/ September 24, 2008, 12:33 am Would Pennington Have Done Better Than Favre? By John Woods Tags: Brett Favre, Chad Pennington It is three weeks into the season, and the Brett Favre-powered Jets are 1-2. Could Chad Pennington have done better? Favre has better numbers over all ? his six touchdown passes are tied for the third-most in the league ? but the Dolphins haven?t suffered; they have outscored and outgained the Jets. The key difference between Pennington, right, and Favre is turnovers. Favre has four this season, Pennington one. The Jets are minus 4 in turnover margin, and each of Favre?s turnovers has hurt. In the Jets? victory against the Dolphins in Week 1, Favre fumbled twice. His first was recovered by the Jets, but they punted two plays later. His second was recovered by the Dolphins at their 24, costing the Jets at least a field goal try. His first interception, in Week 2 against New England, gave the Patriots the ball at the Jets? 31, and they drove for a touchdown and a 13-3 lead late in the third quarter. Against the Chargers on Monday night, Favre was intercepted twice. His first was returned 52 yards for a touchdown, putting the Jets behind by 10. His second set up a six-minute, 45-yard touchdown drive to give the Chargers a 17-point lead with about three minutes left in the first half. And how have the Packers managed without Favre? They are 2-1, and Favre?s replacement, Aaron Rodgers, who has 766 passing yards and 4 touchdowns, is one of three starters in the league to have not thrown an interception.
i agree on cutler being very good but the other names you mentioned in your original post are in the same or worse position as clemens is right now. what would you be saying right now if we traded up for young and then he was talking about not wanting to play football anymore? fire mangini and tannenbaum is what you would be saying. at least we only wasted a second on clemens and didnt trade up for the trash that is leinart and young. and remember we weren't the only team to pass on cutler, and its just this year that he is coming into his full potential, do you think the crazy gloom and doom fans and the media here would have let him ride out the wave of last year? with the diabetes affecting his play and all. i think in a market like new york the pressure on the coach would have driven cutler to the bench not allowing him to develop, and we are still sitting around wondering what we have in him.
Please if you think the fans or the media is driving the management they should be fired right now. We have drafted one franchise QB. We passed on Marino, passed. Cutler was sitting there for the taking we might have even been able to drop one or two spots and gotten another pick but we were desperate for a 2rd round quality LT at 4. I hated Leinart that was the only good thing about getting DBrick. I couldn't beleive we passed on Cutler. The point is we needed and need a franchise QB to build the team around and have had drafts where they are available and whiffed.
we do need a franchise qb you are right, so do a lot of teams though. its not like they are a dime a dozen. every qb or any position for that matter is a risk in the draft. looking back cutler at 4 may have been the best move. but at the time cutler was not that high on anyones board and the jets would have had to trade down to grab him. maybe they tried to and couldn't find anyone to trade with. maybe they had their hearts set on brick. either way we dont have cutler, and are still looking for a franchise qb that most of the teams in the nfl are looking for.
This thread is almost beyond belief. The Jets had no QB going into this season. Pennington can no longer physically play QB in the NFL. Last weeks win was due to the Miami running game and o line. See the Arizona game for the real Pennington. Clemmens is a never-gonna-be. When they got Favre, they got a QB. Old and at the end of the line, but still dangerous and worthy of the defense's respect. Do the Jets have to find another QB? yes. Will we go to the SB this year? Probably not. But we weren't going with what we had anyway, and Favre is a winner and leader that can teach the young guys on this team what it means to be a winner in this league. Let's get real, folks.
We've got Packers fans at the GB websites who for the most part only post when there's a reason to bash Favre. Obviously they're not posting this week.:jets:
