In the end, the difference between the Jets and most of those teams is this: The Jets current veteran QB (CP) is not as good as the likes of Rivers, Garrard, even Campbell and Edwards. I know there is a lot of room to debate that, but I'm speaking in terms of ceiling... We know what CP can do, and what he can't do. KC is simply too young, I believe he needs another year or two.

So that puts us in an ackward situation and miserable QB competition. None of the teams you listed other than Baltimore have that situation.

And this is not an argument for us to get Favre. IMHO I think a first rounder is WAY too much. Second Round pick is even questionable. I was just pointing out why our situation is different than most of the teams you mentioned. Favre is a short term solution, not many teams are in the situation to justify trading for that. Hell I don't even know if we are

The real problem with this post is unlike the Jets, those other teams have a QB. The Jets benched Pennington last year when they recognized he was toast. After recognizing that and starting Clemens they decided that Clemens wasn't ready and have given a QB they already believe is done not only a chance to start again but likely be the starter.

The real difference between the Jets and the Packers or any of those other teams you bring up is Jets management has put out to the team and their fans that they don't have a QB they trust on the roster that they are willing to give the ball to.

Brett Favre obviously is someone they would be comfortable handing the ball to for a year or two while they figure out the next move.

The real issue for the Jets is management has failed to address the position after 3 off seasons and now recognize that they have a very bad situation unless someone steps up.

Chad is not stepping up, Clemens is confirming their worst fears. The Packers, Jacksonville, Baltimore, Washington have already addressed their QB positions and have named a starter, the Jets have not only not done that, they opened a competition between two quarterbacks they started and benched last year.

Favre isn't great he is a shadow of what he was but he clearly has the combination of veteran leadership, toughness and enough arm to help a team that has a lot of potential and a disaster at the QB position until they can fix the situation which is now looking like it's two or three years away.

I don't assume that nobody else wants him. Clearly the only reason we are even in the discussion is Min and Chicago both want him and both have better QB situations than we do. It also wouldn't surprise me if 5 or 6 other teams might want him. I'm sure this discussion is going on at several team message boards right now.

Okay, so let's let Favre play gunslinger and hold back the organization for two or three years until we can find a real QB. I just can't endorse this approach.

If Chad Pennington wins the starting job, you would view this as progress?

Absolutely! You see if Pennington wins the starting role the team would have progressed to the point where they realize Clemens is not going to be their franchise QB. At this point you play Pennington for a year or two until you see what you have in Ratliff and Ainge, or you draft another alternative.

If you bring in Favre for year, you lose all the preparations you've done to this point. You probably have to modify your offense and you need to take up a considerable amount of time to see if Favre can develop some sort of chemistry with the offense, especially the wide receivers. After a year of not making the Super Bowl Favre will retire, or maybe he won't, or maybe he will, or ..., at which point you are now no further then you were a year ago and still don't know who's your starting QB. That is far from progress my friend.

Now, if I were running the Jets what I would do at QB is play Clemens six to eight regular season games until I see if he's a long-term solution or not. Practice and preseaon isn't necessarily a great indication. If Clemens is the answer great! We've got our franchise QB. If not you play Pennington and do what I said above. I'm not sure why this is all so compicated.

"Chad led us to the playoffs each of the three years he was healthy."

Dude, take a nap and rethink this. The man is 32 and has only had 3 healthy seasons. Favre's 39, Favre's 39, Favre's 39. You type it like it must be a incessant chant in your head. Favre's 38 but has never been hurt, and is coming off another good season. Penny's 32 and is hurt the MAJORITY of the time and hangs around mediocrity like it's been his best friend since 02.

In 06, no Jets got injured, our O-Line was still okay and didn't have black holes in it, Coles was still young, and we lucked into an easy schedule. Result? Chad got by with his 17/16 year and made the playoffs.
In 02 and 04, he was as much a product of a good amount of talent and production around him as you say that Favre was this past year. Problem is, Favre has been producing for 17 years and despite what you may think, setting most of the career records for a QB speaks to his abilities. You love Chad for his 3 postseason appearances, but nevermind Favre's 22 playoff games.

I understand and don't disagree with you in principle. The problem is Pennington blew out his shoulder in 04 again in 05 so this is now 5 off seasons in which management including 3 with current management haven't addressed the QB problem to their own satisfaction. 5 yrears we haven't done it what makes you think we can or will address it next year or the year after?

I love to point out the facts about how abysmal Pennington has been since his 2nd shoulder surgery, but I'm not even going to bother with a lengthy post, as I'm too busy laughing simply reading the thread title...

Yeah, except playing Pennington for 2 seasons will probably get our entire coaching staff fired. That could do a little something to all of that 'progress'.

I can't wait until a new QB is drafted, Pennington is cut, Clemens isn't resigned and the draftee, Ratliff and Ainge are left, and all of this shit goes the fuck away.

    Fuck speculation.

I doubt we're getting Favre. Now that he's filed for reinstatement, he's forcing Green Bay's hand, which is probably to release him.

Pennington will most likely beat out Clemens for the starting position. While this does bother me, I will force myself to be optimistic in that Pennington CAN be a solid QB if there is a running game. If Mangini truly transforms this team into a hard hitting running team, then maybe there is hope. CP's play action is up there with the best in the league. That did not matter when we had a non-existent OL and running game... but maybe it will this year.

Regardless, our management's decisions put the team in this situation. Comparing Favre and Pennington is POINTLESS. If we get Favre and give up a draft pick(s), obviously he'll start. They wouldn't give up a pick for a mentor for Clemens.

I'm overloaded with this Favre gossip over the past week. I doubt it'll happen. If it does, so be it, he starts. If it doesn't, we probably have some CPF coming, and again... I'll try to be optimistic like I am every July/August. If the running game emerges this season, Pennington has potential... potential being the key word.

Otherwise, I'm going to keep my blood pressure low by not over analyzing every aspect of CP, KC and Favre, and just see how this team shapes up.

So you're saying Pennington for a year or two is better than Favre for a year or 2 ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

first of all...with the exception of maybe Baltimore, and that's a huge maybe... not one of those teams you listed has a dire need of a starting QB....let alone Brett Favre.

I'm gonna go out on a serious limb here, and make the assumption that you're a bonafide Penny supporter. Which i don't understand....because the guy is one injury away from doing "War Amp" commercials for the rest of his life....and can't throw simple "out routes" without getting picked off

Brett Favre has started...what...265 straight games??!!....and he's still playing at a high level at age 38.

I'm not really following your mindset on this topic....

You are missing points that have been made many times. Favre will set the team back for the reasons said several times above. Plus, if Favre were ever to come here he'd probably play one year and then you'd get the same I'm gonna, not gonna crap he's done for the past four or whatever years. Pennington will be here as long as you need him to be and you won't have to start over with the offense like you would with Favre.

Our play book can be slimmed down to 50 pass plays to suit the skillset of the other 28 Quarterbacks in the league and it will still be better than the 400 play 5 yard dink and dunk Chad designed play book. Farve has been in the league 17 years I doubt very seriously he would have a problem. We might as well start over with the offense if we have a two year plan because Chad is not going to get it done with the offense we have. As another poster said the only thing he will get done in the next few years is get Tangini fired.
