This is exactly why I would want them to draft lynch if he's available over a player I like better. We need to increase our odds of getting a franchise QB.
The thing is he has a really good chance to be there @20. That pick is gonna have some drama this year. Too bad it's not at Radio City, lol.
I really liked what I have seen from this guy. Athletically he stands apart. If he could improve his pocket awareness he could be a quicker version of Ben Roethlisberger. That's certainly his ceiling and he's a risk but he has tremendous potential. I would not be shocked though if Buffalo selected him right before us. They have scouted him for a long time, I think the GM likes him. If he falls and it's looking like the Jets will get him, I would not be one bit shocked If buffalo pulls the trigger on him
The problem is you can't make an assumption on how good or bad a QB is after 1-2 years and if you just draft a QB and throw them to the fire every single year until someone clicks year 1, other positions will take hits from a depth and talent standpoint. Josh Freeman had a nice 1st full season at QB now he's a fringe 3rd string in the league.
thats not really what im getting at. im not saying you have to take a qb every year. im saying dont let a young qb on the roster prevent you from drafting another. especially if that young qb was a late round project.
Lynch would be a great back-up QB after a few seasons of understanding blitz concepts, making reads and understanding what transpire's in the huddle. He's never taken a snap under center. Wentz and Goff are miles better than Lynch. I would pass on Lynch for a great cover linebacker prospect, edge rusher or if one of the top tier offensive lineman fall to the Jets. Lynch is a great athlete with a good arm, but I don't trust his football IQ at this time, but I could trust it 3 years down the road. I don't think he's a star prospect one bit.
Tell that to more than 50 percent of our fanbase. As high as Jet fans are on Petty , and as much as I dont understand that , guaranteed if he struggles over his first 4 games , people will be calling for his exit. And because of the media his "deathwatch" clock will start. Same thing if we pick a young QB early this draft. Its really an unwinnable situation for everyone involved. As hard as it in to find a stud QB , its that much harder for the Jets because of the constant outside pressure the franchise allows to affect their personnel decisions.
I tend to agree. I don't see the point of blowing a 1st to have him sit on the bench for seasons. Let's see what we have in Geno and continue to mold Petty.
I watched the QB's throw out patterns at the combine and Lynch didn't impress, he skipped a few, which means nothing, before Jonnyd attacks me
How is Wentz miles better than Lynch? Wentz doesn't excel in one area consistently. He consistently misses window, shows no aniticpation, freezes on reads, and struggles once a team takes his first read away; he basically played for Alabama lite and was constantly in clean pockets. And he's falsely assumed to be a "prostyle" QB , when in fact ND State runs several concepts from different offenses. The only pro concept they ran against UNI was "Hank", basically two curls and a sitting route over the middle.
Compare any of that to Lynch who has no idea what it's like to take a snap under center with no responsibility at the line of scrimmage? Wentz no doubt has a higher floor and ceiling then Lynch, because he was exposed to pro style concepts in terms of reading defenses and making decisions prior to the snap. Not to mention Wentz has a far better release and Lynch has that annoying wind-up. The tape shows Wentz being a better thrower on the run in my opinion and I think he's got the better brain despite playing lesser competition. To add, the kid is one hell of an athlete too.
Did you watch the Combine and see Wentz' Pro Day? The more you look at him the better he looks. I'm looking forward to Lynch's Pro Day. Wentz is the better prospect. And the draft will indicate that
Lynch has been under center, BTW(not often but he has, I'll try to find a game) Wentz's offense was so much better than the competion that he didn't even need to read defenses well to succeed, and the offense he comes from isn't really pro style.. they run many different option concepts, air raid conepts, some pro reads and pro drops. I just don't think Wentz is THAT good Maybe I'll be wong, but to me he's a third round prospect who has been overly hyped. This has more to do with Wentz than Paxton. Considering the competiton level, his poor play under pressure, a one read system, where he stared down WRS a ton, he's almost as raw as Paxton and he only has 640 passing attempts. I respect your opinion, but the hype is crazy to me.
He's throwing in shorts to open WRS. Am I supposed to be impressed by that? Combine throwing sessions, and pro days don't really mean anything... Wentz will go second, but that doesn't mean the Browns will have made the right pick. Many GMS , scouts, and executives have made massive mistakes on draft night. We'll know if he was worth the hype three years to four years in to his career. I hope he becomes a quaity starter but I'm not sold. Right now, I think Lynch, Goff, Cook(who I don't even like), and another QB or two are better players than Wentz.
We disagree. You have to envision what he will evolve into by assessing every evaluation tool that you can. So the drills are important. The game tapes show also that Wentz is the better all around athlete and passer, imo. It goes beyond what they're situation was on their college team, and foreseeing how they develop from just that, imo. The testing and interviews will also matter. I would bet that Wentz goes way before Lynch. Now, of course if we draft Lynch and you turn out to be right about him I will give you honorary probs on TGG
Fair assessment and I respect that. Wentz could very well be fools gold. The level of competition will always be an issue in terms of evaluating Wentz. Everyone is out there looking for the next big thing and Wentz could be in the cross-hairs and could be over-evaluated. He looks really good in pro days without rushers coming at him, have to admit I wasn't a huge fan of his Senior Bowl performance either. He has some good tape against inferior competition, but the kid can make some amazing throws. I would take him over Lynch only because Lynch's rise to grace was that one game against Ole Miss.
I agree with your take on Wentz. He seems to me to just be the annual QB that's overhyped because every draft needs a top QB prospect. Lots of failed guys in that club. Personally I see Wentz, Goff, Lynch all around the same type of prospect in terms of their abilities. They are all late 1st round (20s+) QBs. Since the Jets pick 20th and need a QB, if any of them are there than they should think long and hard about selecting whoever of them - obviously though they would need to compare to other position players on the board. But I would not call Wentz or Goff better prospects than Lynch by any means. They all have their pros and cons and I even believe Lynch might be better. Any of the crappy teams picking in the top 10 are going to be disappointed with any of these QBs though because they aren't top 10 prospects and going to a bad football team will make them worse.
I'm no draft wonk but it seems to me that Lynch's +/- seem very similar to Petty's. Please show me where I am wrong all you Lynch advocates.
