Not paying a guard top money would be similar to Belichik's aversion to paying corners big money. He also let Damien Woody go when it came down to paying him top money. The positions that Belichik is willing to pay top dollar for are QB, LT, WR (Moss-only and maybe not at this point), NT, DE (Seymour was well paid before the trade, Warren is well paid given his non-superstar status), ILB (drafted Mayo in the top 10 and that turned into money right away and what will be a large second contract if Mayo works out) and S (Harrison not Milloy). He has let CB's, G's and OLB's go pretty regularly when the big payday came up.
Good thing they keep score for four quarters then, and not two. Maybe it didn't occur to you this way, but when teams open the half with a 24-3 lead, and then score on the opening kickoff to make it 31-3, they tend to change things up defensively. Besides, what's the alternative? Keep playing balls-to-the-wall so you can say, "F'in Patriots, running up the score again... no class."
