BP inherited alot of talent that was underperforming and he did what he did best which was to get the best out of his players.

    O'Donnell was a decent QB
    Murrell at RB
Keyshawn(he was a rookie in '96 and had a really good year for a rookie), Chrebet and jeff Graham at WR
Jumbo, O'Dwyer, duffy and Williams on the OL
Hugh Douglas as a pass rusher
    Mo and Marvin at LB
Glenn and Marcus Coleman at the corners
    Victor Green at S

He inherited much more talent than 1-15 would suggest.

BP wasn't in charge of our 2000 draft, that was Al groh.

Our drafting has been at it's best under Tannenbaum but the previous regime did a much better job than BP from 1997-1999.

My response was to the OP's statement below. The 90s would have been considerably different had Parcells not come to the Jets.

Not sure how you could say any different.

We could say the same things about the Lions or the Rams this year. Hell, I'd even suggest the Lions of this year have more talent than that 1-15 team had.

    Parcells was GM in 2000.

I'd contend that 2000 is a saving grace for Parcells. one that makes him better than Bradway when it comes to drafting.

Yeah, like in drafting a complete bust in Becht, maybe an above avg. QB, a great DL, and a decent DL with the four first rounders. Most GMs can do a similar job.

He walked into talent, he is many things but dumb is not one of them. he knew he was walking into talent and inheriting the #1 overall pick.

Al groh was in charge of our draft in 2000 which was why we actually had a good draft. I don't have the links at work but I have them at home and I will post them later.

Becht wasn't a complete bust, he was a great blocking TE. Chad was a franchise QB before he injured his shoulder, Abe was one of the best pass rushers of his generation and Ellis one of the best all around DEs. Not to mention we got Coles in rd 3 and after Toon, Maynard and Sauer Coles is probably the next best Jet WR of all time.

Mangini deserves some credit for assembling a roster full of talent.

People forget that Parcells left us with an OL that was heard in the same sentence as "best in the NFL" regularly, by no coincidence the best RB in Jets history, an excellent if aging linebacking core, bookend DE's, bookend CB's, and a future franchise QB/WR combo.

Herm was a terrible HC. If he wasn't handed a team like this on a silver platter, those would have been some dark years.

Parcells was an excellent HC. He demanded and got results. He schemed well, made great halftime adjustments, and assembled world class coaching staffs.

1998 was the single best Jets team I have seen in my lifetime, top to bottom. They were also arguably the best team in the league and Superbowl favorites entering the playoffs. If 1 or 2 mistkaes aren't made in the AFCC game, he would have won the Superbowl, and we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I hate him for leaving, but anyone that thinks 1998 to present would look any different than the 90's if he had never stopped by, are kidding themselves.

He left us w/ a good OL, w/ our LT, RT and RG contracts all coming up and we were in cap hell thanks to him.

The bookened DEs were drafted by Groh as was that QB/WR combo and we had one good CB(Glenn) that was vastly overrated and 1 overpaid CB(Coleman) that had 1 good year then BP overapid him.

Herm in his first 4 years had 3 playoff apps and 2 playoff wins compared to the 4 years under BP/Groh where we had 1 playoff app and 1 playoff win.

he was handed a team NOBODY wanted to coach including BP, Groh and BB.

Parcells is one of the greatest HC's in NFL history, he is also a medicore guy in charge of drafts and FA.

I agree about 1998 being the best team we have ahd in my lifetime but we were never the SB favorites, the defending Champion Broncos rightfully were. maybe if we hadn't lost games to bad teams like Bal, Indy and SL we'd have had the title game at home and things could have been different.

I will always appreciate what BP did to turn us around but he didn't finish the job and he cost us Belichick which in turn cost us Brady and SBs. Oh and he also cost us peyton Manning too by not telling the Mannings he would take them w/ the 1st overall pick in 1997.

    ****************ALERT****************

THIS RIGHT HERE IS WHAT PARCELLS BIGGEST REGRET SHOULD BE

    **********************************************

When Parcels came to the Jets, Peyton Manning was contemplating entering the draft - they wanted a guarantee from BP that he would be the 1st pick and Parcells ego got in the way and he wouldn't kowtow to the Mannings....

So, what happened was Peyton went back to school and BP was left with a #1 pick worth a fraction of what it was....

To make matter worse, he passed on Orlando Pace - When he went to Miami he learned the one lesson and drafted the Stud LT....

But, Parcells blew that whole scenario HORRIBLY.

If Parcells gets on his knees for the Mannings, the Jets possibly have multiple Super Bowl trophies by now.

    He's also no dummy....

For instance as I stated above he learned his lesson from passing on Orlando Pace and grabbed Long when he went to Miami...

Every draft nick was running around saying "Bil Parcells doesn't draft OL High in drafts"....

Not true - Bill Parcells knows what's up and isn't afraid to make changes......

There's a lot worse you can do in the GM position.

It's the truth. Not many teams have more playoff apps in that timeframe.

Good post. I kind of feel the same way about Parcells' time with the Patriots. I was mad when he left, especially for how he left in the middle of Super Bowl week, but looking back he was key not only to building the team, but keeping the team in New England.

I actually think he was playing on words there a bit. He didn't say, "leaving New England." He said, "having to leave New England."

As in, "I would have stayed if it weren't for the douche-nozzle that owns the team."

Parcells was God. He was the savior of this franchise. He turned it around bla bla bla...

Parcells was an avg. HC. Draft is part of you being an HC and if u can't do well in the draft, you can not be great. Id put Tanny as the best Jets GM so far and HE turned this franchise to where we'd be a playoff team and contend for SB for the next 4, 5 yrs to say the least.

Parcells is a quitter! He'll quit on you the moment you start to suck!
