You're acting as if: 1. Parcells, outside of getting paid, would never speak to Tannenbaum and has no use for him; and, 2. He would play an important role in the organization.

Neither are true. Parcells has a long standing friendship with Tannenbaum, one that isn't going to go away no matter how big of a jerk anyone thinks Parcells may be. Also, his job would be a "consultant". He'd sit at home, watch the Jets games, and then in the middle of the week when Mangini or Tannenbaum calls him up, he'd give them his advice.

If we were talking a more important job, like Assistant GM or Director of Football Operations, I could see and understand many people being against it. But he would be paid to sit at home, watch games, and give them his advice. Nothing more.

Unless one just has an enormous personal distaste for Parcells that goes beyond what could help the Jets, I'm not sure why anyone would hate it.

I am a big Parcells fan but I don't want him here. If we need to consullt with him we can pay him as a consultant. However, I am not sure what we would need his services for. We are obviously in pretty competent hands. He'd be good to come in and give a pregame speech every now and then maybe.

Sorry to say Mort deals in flat out speculation so I would pay little heed to this since all BP would do would muddle things up in H/stead

What I don't understand is where did this "report" come from? I was eating my bagel just now and was reading the Daily News and saw the little article about this, and was like "WHAT?". Out of no where comes this report that Parcells could possibly join the Jets as a consultant.

I think he should just call it quits, but if he does happen to hop aboard, I would only hope he takes his role as consultant seriously, and only that role. I don't want to hear problems between Mangini/Parcells as far as "head coaching" goes.

    Parcells as adviser?

    Parcells as adviser?
Team source says he would be welcome as consultant to GM
    BY TOM ROCK

    January 24, 2007

Bill Parcells has been a de facto adviser for the Jets in the past year, supplying answers and guidance to both general manager Mike Tannenbaum and coach Eric Mangini throughout their first season at the helm. Now that Parcells has retired as the coach of the Cowboys, though, his role with the Jets could become more formal.

The man who coached the team from 1997-99 and was the general manager in 2000 could soon return as a consultant, a move that would be welcomed by the Jets, according to a team source.

"There have been no conversations," the person said, "but you always want to leave the door open."

Unlike some of his other coaching stops, Parcells' departure from the Jets was relatively amicable. He has a solid relationship with owner Woody Johnson and has been a mentor for Tannenbaum and Mangini. It was Parcells who originally hired Tannenbaum for the Jets in 1997. Had Parcells accepted the coaching job in Tampa Bay after the 2001 season, he likely would have taken Tannenbaum with him as a general manager there.

Both Mangini and Tannenbaum have said they run many of their football ideas past Parcells before moving forward on them. His blessing is believed to have been influential in the Jets' decision to hire Mangini last winter, a move largely orchestrated by Tannenbaum.

Parcells has made no indication he wants to return to the Jets, or to the NFL for that matter. He will likely be wooed by television networks that will offer more money than the Jets for his on-air analysis. But if he does rejoin Gang Green, he would likely find the non-demanding role as consultant a semi-retirement that would allow him to maintain a position in the league while avoiding the day-to-day minutiae that he said was a part of his decision to leave the Cowboys. He would also add clout -- and two Super Bowl rings -- to the Jets' front office.

Why do people pay any attention to anything that Chris "Barney Rubble" Mortenson says?

i would be completely fine with this. I think this would be such a huge help to the decision making (not as if I have disagreed with anything Tannenbaum and Mangini have done thus far)

why write the article and then at the end say oh by the way Parcells has made no mention of actually wanting to do this...remember when things used to actually happen and then we'd find out about it

I grew up with two giant fans (Older brothers) and they would tease me about the Jets and as a Kid You would look at the giant’s success and the battles with the 49ers and the cowboy's that really defined that football era. Every one loved the tuna in NY. I have lost all interest in him and get really annoyed when he goes into one of his little tie raids to yuck it up with the media. The only thing he is worth getting advise about is when is the right time to leave a team in the dust and still collect accolades for the mess he's left behind. No thanks!

I'm glad Tom Rock got it right in his article. A lot of the people totally against this don't realize that ever since Tannenbaum gained power in the organization, Parcells has been a "consultant". The only difference is now that he's no longer under contract with another team, he could be "officially" considered a consultant for the Jets.

Penny, I wasn't aware I was "acting as if" anything. This is your observation, however erroneos and misguided. In fact, I don't even know where to start with your assumption that I'm "acting as if" anything. That being the case, your "neither are true" statement makes no sense to me.

Be that as is may, I'm relieved that you have an inside track on exactly how the Jets would use Parcells in such an advisory capacity. I was concerned that he'd show up at practices and games, but I'll sleep soundly knowing that he'll only be able to view the players from his couch at home and then respond via telephone. I'm particularly relieved that we all have your assurance that it will be "nothing more" than this.

All seriousness aside, look, after reading Rock's article (this is not new news, mind you, the Star-Ledger reported this days ago) I can see where you're coming from. I might even be willing to let it play out without teeing off on Bill too badly anymore, at least until I find out exactly what kind of "consultant" capacity he'll be hired for. But please forgive me if I don't change my opinion of Bill Parcells just yet. I still have visions of the way he abruptly left teams (this team included) with little or no regard for the hand that fed him. I'm saying a leopard doesn't change his spots too quickly, but I'm willing to stay tuned...

    Tuna will be back

Mark my words: Bill Parcells won't be out of the NFL for long.

The 65-year-old Parcells retired as the Cowboys' coach on Monday, but we have to believe he'll be back as a consultant - probably with the Jets next season - and if there's a coaching opening he finds intriguing in 2008, he'll be more than ready to take someone's money. Especially if that money comes from the Maras and Tisches in the event Tom Coughlin bombs in '07.
